What did you like about it? Have you seen a lot of other Gundam shows? I'd like to try and get decent discussion for once. I felt it was mediocre to bad in most aspects but I'd like to hear opinions from those with different backgrounds.

Not really.
The first season was a bit repetitive, but it at least felt like it was moving in a clear direction.
The second season felt like it was constantly bouncing between ideas of what it wanted to do, and didn't really settle down into any of them until the last 5/6 episodes. New characters with sporadic characterisation who largely fall by the wayside in under 10 episodes, goals and factions shifting before they've gotten settled into their new set-up, etc. Having said that, it may be an intentional parallel to the way Tekkadan/Orga are presented in the second season, but even if that's the case it doesn't make for a very entertaining show.
I've seen far worse mecha anime, even far worse Gundam, but I wouldn't put it at the top of the recommendation chart by any means.

I've seen every gundam up to turn A. Its been a while since I saw it but I remember liking how mikazuki and the rest wouldn't show any mercy to people who got in their way. They had a goal and they went for it. No pacifism bullshit.
The characters were simple but thats fine. I liked the gundam design. I like how mikazuki being a good pilot was because of the shitty situation he was in at the start, instead of him just being good just because. The fights were fine, especially the last one. The show was slow at times but thats gundam for you. I think I liked the music as well.

I see Aniplex shilling is on point as usual. Fate/Apocrypha isn't even fucking finished yet and is universally reviled by the fandom yet its second in the running for best TV series. I guess I didn't like the fights, characters, or music. I felt like they used one track far too much, they constantly *told* you about characters instead or *showing* you them, and I felt most fights were poorly animated and poorly choreographed, last fight included. Pussying out of letting Ei kill anyone sucked too. The one shot I liked was Ein screaming through the speakers while his body just sat limp.

I've been watching Gundam since F91, caught up with most of UC and most of the AUs except for SEED Destiny and some of the spinoffs like Stargazer (CE just wasn't that enjoyable, music aside). Personally speaking, I enjoyed the hell out of IBO, though I recognize that a lot of what I liked about it were exactly the things people found divisive.

I loved the MS designs. I thought they were really fresh and matched the jarring way combat was portrayed. It's a TV series so I didn't get too hung up on animation, but fuck me if hearing all the melee weapons smashing into mobile suits wasn't the most enjoyable thing I've experienced in a while. There was something very visceral about the way these fights played out that I think we lose when beam weapons get added to the equation, and I appreciated how Sunrise was willing to kill that sacred cow of the franchise.

I know some people can't stand the characters, but while I agree that some of the S2 additions were mishandled, by and large I felt the core of Tekkadan and Gjallarhorn were well depicted in the story. I could understand movitations, even when they revealed McGillis' for the charlatan he was and it turned out his drive was coming from an entirely warped sense of perspective. To me it made sense, even the bit with Rustal's outcome at the end.

I think a lot of the hate for the series comes from how radical a departure it is from typical Gundam-fare. If it were a stand-alone IP, without naming the Gundams 'gundam', I don't think it would be nearly so controversial. But people have expectations coming into a Gundam show, and I think in general the people who liked IBO are the ones who were open to the very different experience it offered. For a show with just two seasons, they did a phenomenal amount of world building that I think is genuinely compelling, and I'd love to see explored further.

It's not particularly helpful to make such sweeping (and dismissive) generalities. Lots of Gundam fans like Mikazuki, but not all of them do. The same could be said for almost every MC. A lot of people seem to love Kira and Athrun and I can't fucking stand either of them.

I'm more open to the disagreement. People can like or dislike Mika to their own tastes. What you see in communities like Mecha Talk and Reddit are a tendency for like-minded individuals to form tighter social media clusters. You hang out with people you tend to agree with. That's not terribly surprising, you just need to take their collective opinion for what it is. Conversely, it also means that when threads on /m/ universally decry or praise something, it's the same effect at work.

Actually, I don't think they do. People can like or dislike something regardless of wheher they can articulate their reasoning. It's still their opinion, and it's just as valid to them as yours is to you. It might be infuriating, and it might not make for a compelling or convincing argument, but that's not the point.

Why would you want to exclude someone though? I mean, in general? Maybe it's different where you're from, but around here, I could probably count the number of people who enjoy giant robot shows (much less gundam specifically) on one hand. I guess to me, it should matter a lot less whether person A likes the characters I like, or the shows I watch; there's an inherent camaraderie in people who like the genre. I'd rather live with the variance in opinion than the comparative isolation of a purist.

I really, really liked the second season. It's unironically my favorite resolution to a Gundam series. The thing is, weirdly enough, I didn't like Season 1 as much! More, I found most of Season 2 boring until the apocalyptic finale, which I REALLY liked.

It's weird - When I was MUCH younger, I saw .hack first. But I found it to be boring, repetitive, and watching SIGN was like pulling fucking teeth.

Ten years later, I watched SAO and I thought "Holy shit, this is basically everything my 14-year-old-self wanted from an anime." I still hold a fucking grudge against everything related to .hack, which was some of the most boring shit I've seen in my entire life.

Let me give you an example: SIGN has you follow Tsukasa, who spends most of the series not doing anything. (That's the point, since he's supposed to be shaking off his emotional funk.) But that shit is not fun to watch.

Meanwhile, SAO's first episode establishes the stakes as "YOU LOSE, YOU DIE" and episode 2 has a boss fight. Not to mention that Kirito's way more interesting to watch than Tsukasa.

Yes, SAO's probably not as *deep*, but it's more fun. I cannot say that I enjoyed any fucking moment of .hack.
