It was basically the same as Amuro and Lalah, just as sudden and founded mostly on the fact they were newtypes and so instantly knew each other. The show wanted there to be greater attachment to their relationship than it had built, which is hard when it skipped any relationship building in the first place and jumped straight to them being star crossed lovers. And the kills her within a few episodes. You barely have time to register her before she's killed and the show wants you to feel like it's tragic, but it's hard to care when she's only just been introduced and most of the relationship is established by the show saying something, rather than making any real effort to show it.
