Why are so many complaining about Macross Delta's CGs?

Looks like a very refined cellshade graphics.

CG only really works for rapid shots with a lot of movement, where it'd be a potato otherwise. Slow motions or close-ups really need to be 2D, or at least CG-guided 2D.

Also "looks like a PS game" is very old trolling.

Honestly though, I think Macross models are actually decent, and detailed. But Satelight has major problems with texturing and lighting. It's like they only use Blinn shaders and no one at the studio knows what a Lambert is.

I still have no idea way the studios don't do what Otaking does. (Render the lines of the model, and just color and shade it digitally like you would the characters.

I have the same issue with it that I had with Frontier and with Aquarion EVOL - the maneuvers and movements of the mecha are just too rapid and don't really give a sense of weight. I mean, yes, this is super futuristic tech but the models cut across the camera just a bit too rapidly and move too fluidly in contrast to the 2d characters - there's more "frames" of motion in them than the drawn characters which is jarring.

M3 had better CG, marginally, but the lighting was managed a lot better. I seem to remember them using some sort of gloss filter too.

Satelite has notoriously bad CG.

Also, nobody watched Logos. Evol is Satelite's best CG work (which isn't a whole lot to be proud of), and they outsourced most of it.

When the CG has the same amount of frames as the drawn characters, people complain that the motion of the CG is distinctly lacking in frames(See: Arpeggio of Blue Steel).
When the CG has more frames, people complains its too jarring.

Arpeggio was all 3d, characters included. Even then I didn't think Arpeggio was really all that bad; heck, I even thought Sidonia was okay despite everyone saying it was choppy. But Delta's a mix of 2d and 3d animation.

I'll definitely admit it is definitely better than Frontier - there's somewhat less dissonance and I think the cuts during say, the dogfights in the first episode are a lot better and help trace the action better.

Orange is good for when you want your mech to feel like it has weight. That doesn't apply much to valks (plus fafners on average are around 100m tall, so it's a lot easier to make them seem heavy).

Macross episode was fucking great, shitters.

Yes the first few cgs were trash and so were the bidepal guys whose name I forgot. But then the cgs skyrocketed into great.

Loved how at the end of the episode the protagonist dies with the girl. I hope they make some ovas of the squadrons and shit. Good movie. Last song was awesome too.

PS: I can't wait to have them on super robot wars

I think the main problem with Macross' CG is that it has always tried to look too realistic,if you look at the style of CG used in Fafner or MJP they try to keep it in the same style as the other 2D elements of their shows, but Macross goes full version Katoki with decals,rust,and other small details that while adding a nice touch to their models,they compromise how well they mesh into the world.

Xrd also did their lighting by hand for every frame of animation. It looks impressive, but it's A LOT more work than just slapping a filter on some models.

What animation studios should be doing is more rotoscoping if they really want to go the CG route.

I liked it a lot, even in trailers. It's different than Orange CGI but it looks cartoonish and the fights were good. I just hope the quality stays up and doesn't rely on stock footage or boring fights, so far it has potential.
