Seri learns of Hiroto's death, an that not only did Orihime know what happened, she decided to keep it from most of the islanders so they wouldn't end up in despair (in reality, she didn't want to see Seri suffer, and had no idea of how to go about it). As a bonus, she let's it slip that she knew Canon's power would end up killing her.

Seri, in tears, tells Orihime that she's definitely not Tsubaki. Tsubaki had a heart.

Orihime ends up depressed over this, the island reflecting her anguish.

Somehow, Seri ends up in a situation where her power could come in handy, but there's a high chance she'll die in the process. Orihime tries to talk her out of it, and apologizes for the way she's acted. Seri forgives her but still goes through with it.

Before dying, Seri looks at the island, saying it's beautiful.

Exodus is only so great because it had DA to work from.

DA was a mecha show that dealt with the coming of age theme in its entirety. The idea of lost innocence in Shangrila's lyrics, the whole "outside world", the synergetic code amplifying the personality change of hormonal teenagers, "becoming another person" to pilot fafner etc. The entire show has not been very subtle about its story being children growing up into adults, decorated with sci-fi and mecha elements. It worked alright and was quite popular, but what drawn people most to it was the sci fi world building, the mechs and the character drama/suffering.

Exodus however no longer needs the coming of age themes as everyone is now grown up. Thus it drops all that and ramps up all the world building and sci-fi to an 11.

It's not a meme. It's an opinion that several people independently came up with.
Personally I think it's wrong, and more of the voicing of that opinion is probably encouraged by the rise in split cour/S2 stuff as of late (influencing the lens through which series are watched).
