I'd sooner take a show where female characters aren't pilots or combatants but are competent at other things, than one where its women fighters are praised as experienced or gifted, but spend most of the series either jobbing or needing MC-kun to rescue them.

Which one will this be? Too early to tell yet. But Kudelia decided to become the figurehead for the independence movement out of her own volition, no one told her to do it. So she was already showing initiative. She is also smart enough to figure out her father sold her out. There are strong hints she won't be just a useless princess good for standing around and channeling naive idealism.

But once again, too early to tell yet. Watch more, see how the situation develops.

I don't think The Woman Called Fujiko Mine was a "clusterfuck" but it was definitely a mixed back. More to hate than there was to love, but it was an interesting experiment.
