Laserion is a bizarre amalgamation of 80s Real Robot and 70s Super Robot elements that takes the worst from each style. It was obviously trying to cash in on the popularity of Gundam (it even has an odd pseudo-Char anti-villain complete with red mech and killing other villains), but didn't understand why Gundam was successful. The virtual reality elements are just surface flavoring and have almost no bearing on the show outside of Laserion's origin story in episode 1.

The protagonist having to cod his finishing sword in binary each time he uses it is hilarious though(At least when the show remembers he has to do it).

I was afraid of that. It's like comparing Cobra to Total Recall.

So where does Trider G7 fit in all of this? I'm almost finished watching the RAWs and the impression I get is that it's basically slice of life series where whatever the hell Watta has to do with his friends or at school is interrupted at no specific moment during an episode to pilot a giant robot. The fucking title mech feels like an afterthought in every episode, with only the villains being relevant to it at all.

I enjoy Ga-Keen for a dumb robot show. He vomits rainbows as one of his attacks and the monsters are gloriously ugly piles of shit.

Toei Robot Girl version of Gakeen is superior.
