It wasn't Bandai screwing with him, it was him refusing to work with other directors on more than single episodes so that even if his health failed the product could be given the screentime it really needed. Pretty sure it's explicitly stated in show that machines like the Zaku, Cannon Ilfuerto (or however you spell it) and even the Willgame were all covered in a material that protected it from the Moonlight Butterfly. It was shown to be quite brittle if I recall, so was presumably useless as conventional armor, but the nanomachines were probably programmed not to touch it. Also, they were buried underground upon discovery and possibly even pre-Moonlight Butterfly so it's possible the nanomachines simply don't go underground when searching for stuff to eat.

Actually the novel states that the reason random MS weren't dissolved is because some of the nanos malfunctioned and switched from "disassemble" to "preserve". The DG Cells created a whole new surface for the earth, everything was permeated with them. It's not so much a case of them being too far underground when the nanos covered the earth, it's more like the nanos resurfaced the earth on top of the preserved MS.
This is why all those craters from X went away.

That was the 00 movie: Awakening of the Trailblazer, which sucked pretty hard due to lame T-1000 knock-off aliens and sudden flower ending. It actually ran contrary to the whole message of 00 of humans needing to unite, become more accepting of those who are different, become enlightened, etc because in AOTB all that really mattered was that Setsuna's new gundam could teleport and mind-meld; societal development had nothing to do with the story at all..

Neither the 00 or SEED series had aliens. There was that one fossilized whale found on one of Jupiter's moons in SEED, but with the former AU's now being a single timeline that could easily just be from a jovian colony in a previous era (remember they even had whales on the moon in Turn A) instead of an alien spacewhale.

I've read that the concept of a post-series film where man first encounters aliens was originally going to be done with SEED but was scrapped and then later recycled in the 00 story, but I read it on 4chan so...

It uses time wisely to build concepts and build the world which are different from the average gundam. It isn't really a war story (half the time the sides aren't really at war or on cease fire) so again stands out from most Gundams. Basically the only Gundam thing about the story is the war is bad stuff. It takes the base ideas and does something completely different instead of "This is gundam with all the gundam stuff but now newtypes are called *spins wheel* coordinators"

I won't say it's perfect, nothing in this franchise is, but I appreciate the first season of 00 more for trying to innovate (no pun intended) the franchise going forward. It tried a new style setting and it worked for them. Unfortunately it failed to leave a legacy so far. Though, there were clearly a lot of things changed before the start of the second, and end of the first. For instance, Graham/Bushido was wearing a standard federation uniform instead of A-Laws at the end of season 1 time skip. That should imply something right there.

His family life being totally dysfunctional had more to do with that, the having a girls name thing is just that icing on the cake that makes him flip because he is constantly at the boiling over point.

Kamille just kind of idiotically thows himself into the situation, but he develops allot as a character. It's interesting because by episode 30 he is really starting to grow a conscious about all the enemies who he killed. He started off hardly caring but the war starts wearing him down and as his netwype powers grow he gets more and more sensitive to the situation, while also becoming less erratic.

Turn A is the best Gundam mainly for the character interaction and strong overarching plot. It's only downside are some goofy characters like Corin, by Tomino makes it work. Brilliant art and music, strong fight scenes when they do happen( watching Loran go at it with the two balls on chains is great), DIANA AND KIHEL, typical but well played Tomino apocalypse scenario about how man is going to doom himself over and over again. It's just a really great show in terms of Gundam animations I would say the top 5 would be

Zeta = Turn A, CCA, 0079, Victory
