I think every logical mech commander in the Davion Guard would opt for more Catapults instead of more heavier assault mechs.

Heavier mechs are good at individual fights but in every battalion vs battalion fight long range artillery support wins.

I really don't understand why people lost interest on Battletech universe. I mean the games were awesome, it had decent amount of lore and story too. But most importantly it had very nice and symbolic mech designs.

For the gaming view, salvaging stuff and opponents being always better than you were extremely valuable and fun.

And I terribly miss the cheesy sci-fi intros the games used to have.
>>
>>12480142
That is so 80s it hurts.
>>
>>12480375
>I really don't understand why people lost interest on Battletech universe.
FASA mismanaged their IP, sold off all the video game rights and miniature rights instead of leasing it or whatever it is you do usually.
Then they quit making content for the tabletop, and the IP got even more mismanaged by WizKids. The Dark Ages were dark in more than one way, if you catch my drift.

Honestly it's a goddamn miracle it's still as together as it is now.
>>
>>12480447

V's actually the best-selling AC game in Japan and Miyazaki's said that they need to keep their portfolio diverse and even expressed interest in directing an AC game. I think it's just a matter of time, keep in mind there was a 4-year gap between FA and V.

It won't be dead. You can't kill these games, they live on with small player bases. The miniatures are still being made, and every so often you get people getting into the miniature game after getting interested from MWO.

I might be seeing this from a different perspective. I've played battletech on and off since the early 2000's, and with the recent boxed sets it's honestly the most active I've ever seen it. I've got a Time for War RPG group I'm GMing and Ironwind Metals is bringing out new sculpts every month or so.

The universe is solid, and despite the fact they can't manage the business side for shit, somehow the lore has been pretty well managed (if we compare it to lore in other miniature games). I mean they clawed it back after the Dark Age time skip. Even if parts of the Jihad are slightly asspull.

Someone posted something about that in /tg/ and I thought it was a 'Clanners are overpowered' joke.

Then I was messing around in Mek Designer and was really confused why my mech was like 5 tons under weight.

When I first got into the game I like the clans just for the designs, and then the lore... but the crunch... oh god why. My first game of battlemech I wasn't sure why the guys teaching me would only let me use two mechs (a Nova and a Shadow Cat) versus 4 of my opponents. Clean sweep, on my first game. My pilots got lightly singed because I didn't understand heat management, but first shooting round I managed to head crit two mechs...

I love the hubris of the Ha Otoko.

The most practical and bound to survive of all the Clans shows of its pure pragmatism with a mech so blatently meant to be sold to the Inner Sphere it nearly gets them straight up trialed if not for the fact the grand council was so weak by this point they can't do shit.

When Ha Otoko's start turning up in Draco units, the Diamond Sharks pretty much just flip them the bird, and go 'Nah they must have raided them from our tourman, we're using it as a second line mech!' because you can basically throw any shitter mech into a second line unit.

Latter the Diamond Sharks decide the grand council are shitters themselves and change their name back to Sea Fox, and become friendly trader clanners. Best Clan.

There's a lot of mech I like:
- The Centurion (shame MWO made it shit)
- The Hollander and Hunchback (shoulder cannons FTW)
- The Catapult (the first Mechcommander made me fall in love with it)
- The Thor/Summoner (all-around asskicker)

But, at the end of the day, I could say I like almost all Battletech mech, with the exception of some weird redesigns, and the Protomech

I'm surprised there's no "modern" Battletech videogame (something like Megamek, but with GRAFICS)

I remember how on the second misson your light team was on the run from a single Hollander because he could two shot one of your guys with the Gauss Rifle

Shame how in both games the mech customization was oversimplified, thus making all the mechs just slightly different kinds of gun bags

I had to use the patch that gave you a Mad Cat from the beginning, because the only way I had of beating that mission was blowing the fuel tanks, and there was nothing to salvage after that.

>>12482201
Literal walking tanks. They're also one of the few instances where a mecha is kind of believable.

Also, the Futuristic Game of Thrones-esque Lore is kind of interesting.

Sometimes, people just like the pseudo-realism angle.
>>
>>12482217
But its not though. BT designs are not usually any of those things. The Atlas looks more Mega Blocks than realistic. When I think 'realistic mecha' I turn to Chromehounds or a Jegan. Not to mention

Running away from him just lets him stay at long range and pick at you.

MWLL usually has pretty decent numbers during the weekend. I just hope you like organized gameplay and having to deal with spergs losing their shit over ts3. I used to play religiously but lost interest as the population dwindled because I don't like organized stuff. The one time I played during some weekend event I managed to talk the server admin into turning off the cbill sharing bullshit so that one team couldn't pool all their starting money for a madcat or something, me and one other guy on my team ended up wrecking the RPing clanfags on the other side they kicked me from the server. good times.

Battletech designs are released in books called Technical Readouts, each based around an in-universe year. The ones for 3055 and 3058 had a huge number of absolutely horrendous looking mechs in them. Many of which are now getting redesigns
>>
>>12482201
Battletch mechs tend to look very blocky, asymetrical, have stubby limbs that end with a built-in weapon, and usually no cool "head".
In short, they look ugly. Like, realistically ugly. Like those stubby ugly WWII tanks. Built to fight, built ti work, and have zero concern for aesthetics. In that sense, they feel very realistic.

"But anon, the Atlas is obviously built for aesthetics!"
Even when they try their damnest to build a cool intimidating robot, they still end up with blocky proportions and stubby arms, and it stomos around like everyone else. They didn't build a handsome mech with spindly arms and waist sliding around above ground like there's no friction.

That's the appeal of Battletech.
>>
>>12486516

The Atlas is based on the Scopedog, Anon.

That would never happen though. It looks cool but any mech can outrun Atlas and why would anyone be willing to brawl with Atlas.

So I also think one of the parts that made Battletech mechs appealing was that they look like they were designed to engage in a bit more realistic combat.

If you look at the 3025 art, you can see that the Atlas, along with the Zeus, is a traced-over 3025 BattleMaster. Which is itself traced.

It literally has the exact same lower arm paneling. The domed head is likewise very obviously influenced by the Beemer's bubble-cockpit.

Basically, you guys are looking at the wrong Okawara mech.

That's the point, I don't see it that way. I don't see it as "realistically ugly", I see "I can only draw squares". There's nowhere near enough detail on most of them and the detail that is there is just there filling space between weapons. Each mech consists of a single or two shapes. Many are just cockpits on legs with guns either welded on or at the ends of some dryer vent tubes on the side. They look immobile. "Realistically ugly" to me means Scopedog, on which every nook and cranny seems to have a very clear reason for being there.

I thought they gave reporting names because they didn't know what they were rightly called.

The angle at which they're depicted and the manner in which they're posed in their respective lineart also share too many similarities to be mere coincidence.
