Depends on the artist, but I certainly have a preference for the old styles myself. However, there are a lot of modern artists today that I fucking love right up there with the old greats. Kantoku is one of those modern artists that I really enjoy.

I'm pretty sure that's the point of the image. It's not actually saying that modern anime is objectively better animation-wise, it's saying that you can really easily make an image that shows as much by taking the "worst" of the past and the "best" of the present.

It's to counter the usually more serious images that do the same, but with taking the best stills of the best past anime and the worst from the worst of the present.

No one with half a brain seriously thinks that's a fair image. It's just one that has the purpose of reverse a comparison to show how stupid making the comparison is.

There's mostly subtle stuff. Little changes here and there. The problem is that changes are made to make Kira seem more infallible and Jesus-esque, so he does nothing wrong throughout the series.

The most notable and quoted example is Nicole's death. In the remaster he throws himself on Kira's sword. It should go without saying that that's not how it actually happened.

Ok, well, I'm an artist for a living, so I'll give my opinion on why the left is the better picture.

The lighting, for starters. Both have white light but the source of light for the left is above and to the left, whereas the right has studio white lighting from the front (slightly above). It's very boring and you almost never want to use that lighting if you're creating a dynamic picture.

Second is line width. The left image has a standard line width. It isn't preferable but if you can pull it off, it works (I'll explain why soon). The second image has completely arbitrary line width. Usually width follows the density or the object, or reflects the angle of the light. For her chin to have such a large stroke, the top of her hair should have a very small one, but that isn't the case...

Thirdly, the texture. This applies to the line texture on the left. The use of a textured brush eliminates a lot of small errors that are easily noticed with "standard" flat brushes. This is usually why cell shaded anime looks better, since it has an appealing natural texture. The right looks plastic-like and inorganic.

Finally the choice of colors.
The left's skin tone is more dynamic. The color of her shadows are more red than the skin on her face, whereas the right just shades with a slightly more black version of the skin. In art, it's a rule to NEVER shade with black, or transparent black. This is how a lot of younger artists color, and it looks very amateur.


The background in the left image is much darker compared to the character, and the red stands out against it. In the right image, the colors are all very visually similar to one another, in terms of light saturation. This makes the image appear very flat in comparison to the right, again, an amateur mistake.

Anon, the point of that picture is to make fun of people who think that post-90s is nothing but cute girls doing cute things anime, even though that has been around for decades and goes back to the days of Osamu Tezuka.

Anime has always been done in a way to meet deadlines, but with the advent of digital production, these deadlines can be made more intense and completed in time. Because of this, we aren't stuck in the stock footage hell for a lot of the shows in this day (discounting the mecha genre), meaning that studios can make several unique scenes with dazzling animation (see Nichijou for example).

The flattening of colors is a relatively small price to pay for a significant bump in the animation for TV series, plus lots of shows can make it work for a stylistic choice, like Tiger and Bunny.

Now this doesn't make one era objectively better. After all, we had this almost a decade ago
