Just finished the first episode. Here are my thoughts.

+ I enjoyed the realistic way the mechs maneuvered in zero G. They have some sort of air propulsion for space which is a nice touch.

+ everything beeps, whirrs, clacks, & makes other noises, even when it's unnecessary. Gives the show a good sci-fi feel.

+ The 3 lenses on the mechs looks really interesting, & them making a camcorder sound when they switch is a nice touch, but everything seems to make noise in this show.

- Subs were kind of hard to follow. Often times I had to pause to re-read things because of all the new character names & factions being thrown at me, though this may not be G_P's fault.

Overall, pretty promising. How many episodes do I give this before I decide to watch the whole thing? 3? 6?

>How many episodes do I give this before I decide to watch the whole thing? 3? 6?
What's stopping you from just watching and deciding by yourself?
>>
>>12153977
>How many episodes do I give this before I decide to watch the whole thing? 3? 6?

Kind of hard to say as it takes some time before the story starts to pick up the pace. I'd say 7-9 episodes.
>>
>>12153977
It depends if you like Uodoo or not. If you do (like I did, probably because of too much 2000AD as a kid), then you'll probably be into it from the second episode.

If not, then you'll have to wait a bit for things to go crazy in Uodoo and things to get extremely explode-y. But six episodes in should get you in. If you REALLY hate Uodoo then try and power through until you get to the next arc (around episode 12 or so).
>>
>Not watching all of anime Rambo in a mech
>>
>>12154007
Also, while I don't think they give you too much information in the first episode aside from briefly showing what the universe is, there's not going to be a big info-dump like that for a while.
>>
>>12153977
I personally give things a four episode test. That way you've given the series the equivalent of a movie's worth of your time. If after that NOTHING has sparked your interest, then why keep watching?
>>12153995
>7-9 Episodes...before it picks up the pace
So at 25(ish) minutes an episode (estimated), that's nearly 3 and a half hours to get to the meat of the plot...? I'm sorry, but that's just shoddy pacing IMHO.
INB4 Hurrr Durrr Tenshun Span
No, three hours to get to anything interesting is just bad writing.
>>
>>12154017
Except it gets into the plot immediately. But things don't start blowing up like crazy until episode 7 or 9.
>>
>>12154028
Besides thinking that main plot is the only thing that can be interesting is a faulty mentality.
Many things don't even need a presence of significant plot to be interesting.
>>
>>12154017
The problem is that some people don't like seeing stuff about corrupt police and gangs working together, quasi-illegal robot combat sports, conversations about conspiracies and why certain people are here, arrests and interrogation, heists and break-outs, and so on. They think they're boring. I don't, but some people do. So that's why some people say 'Oh 7 or 9 episodes'. For me, I don't see why after watching the first episode of VOTOMS wouldn't make you want to watch more.

>>12154038
This. Having a good plot to help tie things together or be entertaining in its own right is always fantastic, but there's plenty of stuff in VOTOMS which is fun to watch even if taken out of context.
>>
>>12154038
I didn't say "main plot" I just said "plot". If sub plots are being built on and the groundwork of the universe is being built up and that's genuinely interesting then the narrative has plenty of hooks to work on and a solid basis for the entire story.
Where I admit I made a mistake is in thinking that it took 7-9 episodes for the first interesting thing to happen, but what was actually being stated was that in 7-9 episodes a major twist or plot point happens.
>>12154028
Ah, well my misunderstanding then.
>>

Huh! I also just started watching this, OP. Currently on episode 6-7 and finding it quite engaging. It's the first classic (old) show I've watched so it took a bit to get used to the art, but after that it's been fine.

While VOTOMs has been on my radar for a while, I honestly started watching recently partly because I saw one of the Bandai 1/20 scopedog kits and really wanted one, but I felt I needed to watch the series first to get better acquainted.

Also, Coconna a best

Voodou arc is pretty slow paced. And a lot of the show feels like running in circles and filler. But the show is pretty solid. Go watch the show then come back.

In universe, they're glass canons. Lightly armored, fast, decent fire power. Built for speed and being able to work in any terrain. But this comes at the cost of being lightly armored.

There's also the obvious: It depends on the situation and the pilot. Named characters can take more damage than they should.

Adding to that, outside material states that their fuel source is highly combustible, so...

OP here.

Just watched ep2, & wanted to highlight some thoughts

+ It looks like jazz & even classical music are going to be parts of this series, I'm really happy to see that

+ Escape Chase, corrupt police, Prison breaks, AND Mad Max Style motorcycle thugs? Pretty awesome.

+ The colors in the series sometimes surprise me. Things like the red acid rain & the rainbow control panels stood out to me

? Is animal protein really rare in the future or something? Who has a sales pitch for a frog like that. I hope little touches like that add to the world building so I can figure out if most of the world is as shitty as these slums the main character has escaped to.

+ episode ending on him sleeping in a rused out cockpit of one of his old mechs was a nice touch too.

+ Two separate instances of the main character wearing a different Face piece in the first 2 shows. Recurring theme, or is this just suppose to parallel his earlier days as a soldier?

Overall this show seems to be a bit slow, but the second episode had way more action than the first. The attention to detail is impressing me so far.
>>
>>12162280
>Music

Yeah, the soundtrack for VOTOMS is pretty decent. But you may get a little tired of it towards the end. I didn't, but you might.

>Escape...

This is one of the things I loved about this arc.

>Colours

Yeah, the colouring in VOTOMS is actually really nice. There's one or two things that seem a bit odd here and there, but I really like the design and colours on the whole

>Animal Protein

Remember that it's just after a hundred year conflict. Everything has been nuked and polluted to hell so food is scarce and rationed. Any sort of edible protein would be sought after.

>Cockpit

Definitely.

>Face piece

Not sure if it's meaning something or a recurring theme, I think it's just because he was in the acid rain, although he does wear a face mask for certain reasons quite a few times come to think of it. It may be a theme.
>>
>>12162307
>he does wear a face mask for certain reasons quite a few times come to think of it.

Well he was a pilot with a mask, then he went on the run and ended up in slums with a mask & then back in a cockpit again by the end of the episode. Kinda feels like he can't escape being a solider.

I was amazed when I noticed that that military base where Chirico was held captive at the beginning, Woodo and Kummen were all at the same planet.
You just come to expect in sci-fi stuff the old cliché of planets only having one single biome and being more akin to towns or at most countries than anything as diverse as a whole fucking planet should be.

Just finished 25, this second arc is seriously soporific, I liked the 1st arc though

>Just finished 25, this second arc is seriously soporific, I liked the 1st arc though

I'm the opposite. First arc is slow. Second one is a war epic in Space Vietnam.

Nope. It does have some really nice story arcs though.

The second arc for me is a copy pasta of the first arc without the mystery about PS.
Currently watching the 27th, it better not end with Fyana going back to the pope-like guy and a 3rd arc being a mix between the first and the 2nd arc.

As someone who just recently finished Votoms for the first time I have to say, I didn't get hooked into Votoms until the first arc was reaching its climax. So I'd say 12 episodes, at least watch one story arc to see exactly how the story progresses, get a feel of the cast etc.

IMO 3 episode rule should only apply to a 12 episode show with 6 being for 25 episode shows.

Just to tell you know OP, if you like the hard sci-fi feeling....you might want to let go of your attachment. As the series progresses it'll go farther into mysticism and pseudo-science.

I saw a picture of Robert Redford today and I'm pretty sure he would have (when he was younger) been a perfect casting for Rochina in a live-action adaptation.

I'm on episode 6 & I'm loving the ride so far. Poor Chirico.

Am I right in saying everything would have been fine if they had just left him alone? The man was tortured at LEAST twice, & by the second time they realized that he didn't know anything.

Do they just want him dead at this point so he doesn't ask any questions & look into the girl he saw?

Everyone comparing Chirico to Space Rambo aren't far off by the way. It's refreshing to see mech fights end with decisive boxing punches.

Can't really find any fault in that. IIRC it's made by putting paint on a toothbrush, or any other similar short-haired brush, and then brushing it with your thumb so specks of paint fly off and hit your subject. Of course you cover up everything you don't want speckled.

Indeed they are.

Akira Nishijo alias Taichi Nishimura alias Akira Nishimura, is likely frequently responsible for the times when Chirico is given more of a cute babyface.
The famous smile frame frequently posted is his work. Defining characteristic: the cute stub-nose.

Norio Shioyama: the original character designer.
He's drawn the character so often in so many different ways it's hard to pick an identifying characteristic.
I'd say it's probably how he does Chirico's eyes as stark, simple parallelograms.

Moriyasu Taniguchi: better known as the chara designer for Layzner. Was a fanboy of Chirico's design, so Eiji's resemblance is no surprise.
Defining characteristic: pointy chins, always the pointy chins. Draws Chirico with a wider face.
