It's extremely depressive, but not in a tearjerker way. It has a very gloomy and eerie atmosphere due to the action being set in world where they live every second of their lives as a last one.

Mecha designs are nice, so are the characters.

Give it a try, it's definitely worth it

The "mechs fighting shapeshifting dick monsters" and "last remaining human civilization on a thousand year old ship full of clones and immortal people" often takes a backseat to harem comedy shenanigans.

Granted, said harem comedy shenanigans usually involve a hermaphrodite cyborg, at least two clone supersoldier sisters, and a dick-monster hybrid with the mind of a 15 year old girl.

Basically Battlestar Galactica with Mechs.
Few basic points
Sidonia's the last human ship in existence; all other seedships have disappeared after earth got split in half by the Gauna 1000 years ago.
They can only kill Gauna by piercing their true body with a Kabi (Spear).
The Characters are far less annoying than AoT but there are a few bits when 3 girls are falling over the main character before the Gauna attacks begin increasing, after which it kind of falls to the wayside.
Animation is slow and jarring in the first few episodes but really gets more fluid as the series goes on.
Lots of scenery porn too.

What was the last chapter to be scanlated? I have up to Ch70 and I don't have the Mega link.

That bit with "its a bear suit" is probably my favourite Nihei callback yet. If you don't know, in Biomega there was a bear person and the protag at first assumed it was a guy in a suit, but the bear quickly denied it. So now we have a bear person that everyone assumes is just a bear, only to find out 50 chapters later that yes, it is in fact a person in a bear suit.

Other good ones:

The Gauna are the only monsters that genuinely terrify me.
They seem to be a mixture of all "assimilation" type monsters in fiction but OP as fuck.

i binge read a shit ton when i first found it a while back, didn't think it would get popular.
Then it got popular so i decided to pick it up again and read some more.
But it's just like, I feel like the readers are kept out of the loop i guess? I feel like somethings supposed to happen but it's just not because you can only do so much in the setting. "Oh shit it's a space monster. Lets fight it. But the twist this time is...." It feels like the pokemon anime where it's constantly the same shit over and over.
I stopped basically when Ochiai took over long haired prodigy guy and he created the chimera that then proceeds to absolutely wreck the Small Mass Union ship.

I feel like the only one who found this series super dull. Not in the good slow way but it lacked any personality and you could see most plot points a mile off
