Hi everyone. I just arrived in Japan yesterday, staying for the month, and I was wondering if you guys have advice for cool /m/ related things to check out?

Done: Visit to Akihabara
Visit to Mandarake
Visit to Gundam Cafe

To Do: Kamen Rider the Diner
Odaiba Gundam
Comiket

I'd really appreciate it if you guys have anything else you can add to this list, or any other general advice.

There was no Mecha Monday yesterday because it was Tuesday in Japan, and my first day. I'll see about doing Mecha Monday Japan time next week, as promised!
>>
you are canadian until you come home
>>
Do you like toku?

If so, go to the Toei Hero Museum at the Aeon Mall in Chiba Prefecture. From Tokyo Station, get on the Keiyo Line (rapid). There's only one way you can go on it so don't worry. The station you are looking for is Kaihinmakuhari. This is also the route that takes you past Disneyland if you have trouble, just ask what JR route goes to Disneyland. When you get to Kaihinmakuhari, take the bus from the front that goes to Aeon Mall.

Toei Hero Museum is in the "family" area, on the third floor, I think. You'll have to buy one of the transformation braces. They'll ask you if you want to drive the kiddie cars too probably but you can say no. Photos are OK in there, and you can see all the cool suits.

If you have any trouble just ask.

There is a Gundam Cafe in there too, btw. I'll try to think of some other stuff... are you going anywhere outside of Tokyo? If Kyoto, check out the Toei Uzumasa Movie Museum.
>>
Not /m/, but the Tsukiji fish market sounds cool.
>>
You only got there yesterday and already went to akiba? God, take your time. Time goes fast but it's still a month. Don't wear yourself out.
>>
>>11761360
Haha, better to claim that I'm a Canadian then?

>>11761373
Oh hey there Sailor! Yeah, the Gundam Cafe across from the musuem is Jaburo themed right? I'll definitely have to check it out.

I was considering going to Kyoto until I got here, and realized how huge Tokyo was, so I'll probably just stick here.

>>11761470
Fish is /m/.

>11761480
Yeah we were just going to hang out but ended up going there on a whim. I'll definitely have to pace myself out though. Possibly going back today though.
>>
>>11761574
Well, don't stay in Tokyo the whole time.
You got a rail pass? If you don't wanna go too far, here are some non-/m/ but fun things you can do.
Go to Nikko (take the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Utsunomiya, then take the Nikko Express to the city. See the mausoleum of Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu)

Go to Kamakura, old city on the coast. Beautiful place.

From Akihabara, take the Tsukuba Express to Tsukuba and then go to JAXA, the space agency where Fourze hung out. You can also see DAT MALL where they film all the toku scenes.

Oh, another cool thing to do in Tokyo, there's a place called Roppongi Hills north of regular Roppongi where there is the coolest Christmas illumination you probably will ever see.

When you see the Gundam in Odaiba go at NIGHT because they have a night show event with lights and a backlit show.

Oh, when you go to Comiket, prepare for battle and GET THERE EARLY. Bring bags with you, but don't pack too heavily because you will not be able to move easily.
>>
>>11761800
I was considering getting a rail pass and travelling around Honshu, but might not now. It'd be nice to travel, it'd cost more money that I might want to spend in Tokyo instead.

Oh hey yeah, I definitely need to see JAXA and the mall, I forgot about those. I'll also check out Roppongi Hills.

Also thanks for the Comiket advice. I want to buy a cosplay for it, but that seems like it might be a little difficult if it's going to be that busy.
>>
>>11761844
They have special rules for cosplay there, particularly about wearing of costumes to and from the event, e.g. no costumes on the trains. People get titanically butthurt about it and write gripey posts on 2ch about it, but you can do it if you bring your costume with you and do it when you go to the registration area.

Yodobashi Camera is a great place to shop if you don't want to spend any effort looking for new stuff. I recommend it.

Go to Nakano and check out Nakano Broadway, lots of great toys and stuff there, Mandarake owns most of it. It's pretty much the new Akiba now, but foreigners know about it now so it's been starting to get picked clean of stuff.

BTW, nobody cares if you're Canadian or American while you are there. They might care if you're Chinese.
>>
>>11761880
yeah, I read their rules about cosplay.

Yodobashi Camera? Sounds familiar, I'll have to take a look at it.

Was planning to actually go to Nakano for Mandarake, but I'll check out the other stuff too. They even have a Games Workshop in Nakano.
>>
For must see /m/ related stuff far away from Tokyo, the life size Tetsujin 28 in Kobe is absolutely beautiful.

Kyoto and Nara are both highly recommended if you have even a passing interest in Japanese history. Can't think of anything particularly /m/ related in either though, unless we count the shrine dedicated to Abe no Seimei on account of him popping up in New Getter.

Oh, and if you have the chance, try Kyochabana's tomato okonomiyaki. It's absolutely delicious.
>>
The Giant Buddha in Nara is big and metal. The building in its in is way cooler though
>>
>>11761360
>iie, canadajin desu
>>
>>11761909
The "really big" Games Workshop is in Jinbocho. If you don't mind a hike, you can walk there from either Akihabara, or take the JR Chuo Line to Ochanomizu and then walk south, and you'll be almost right there. Really nice district.

There is a ramen chain in Japan called Ichiran. You can find one of them in Shibuya. Cross the scramble and go north, next to the ZARA until you get to the Marui City. Marui is the building with OIOI. Ichiran is on the right next to the bank. You have to go downstairs. Check Google Maps. It's fantastic like whoa. Hakata Ramen is some of the best ramen in all of Japan.
>>
>>11761318
>>11761360
I'm actually Canadian, heading over the pond in a few weeks. Anytime I travel, everyone assumes you're american. I know some backpackers put nice big maple leaf patches on their bags to clear it up.
>>
>>11762993
You forgot to mwntion GW's rodiculous opening hours

It was, what, 1PM to 6 PM?

think people have wverything covered. Final chapter of parlabor TNG airs in cknemas this month, worth watching

Japanese cinemas themselves are an experience what with how you can have an entire row to yourswlf depending on day/time and all the novelties on sale
>>
also: eat yakiniku, tonkatsu, curry, yakitori, belt sushi and two pound steak
>>
>>11761574
>Haha, better to claim that I'm a Canadian then?

As a general rule, whenever travelling abroad, claim to be Canadian.
>>
oh and expelled from paradise is still airing last I checked (humax ikebukuro still had it last saturday), that's really worth watching

A few random suggestions:
Go to McDonalds and try a Teriyaki McBurger.
Check out a Pokémon Center or two.
On a nice day go to either Tokyo Tower or Skytree and enjoy the view.
>>
>>11763750
Your waifu a shit, ebi fillet o best mcdonald
>>
>>11763750
Yeah, Skytree especially is not to be missed.
You can also go to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government building in Shinjuku and go to the 50th floor for free. Great photos on a clear day, even better ones in the evening.
>>
>>11763691

pretending to be canadian doesn't actually work in practice and most people see past it/don't care/don't know the difference. especially outside of countries that canada actually had a role in their history in, such as all the countries they liberated in during ww2. telling people you're canadian in japan does jack shit. tell them you're german instead.
>>
dang, /m/ is so helpful and friendly. i'm going to japan for a week at the end of december and i asked /jp/ for comiket advice, and every reply was a derivative of "secondary fan" or "scum".

Comiket Rule #1:
BRING YOUR OWN BAGS. BIG ONES THAT YOU CAN HOLD ON TO EASILY, MOVE BETWEEN SMALL AISLES WITH, AND FILL WITHOUT UNZIPPING. They don't give bags with purchases.

Comiket Rule #2:
If you want something, KNOW WHERE YOUR CIRCLE IS GOING TO BE LOCATED.

Comiket Rule #3:
*****PRINT****** a map of the Big Sight floor plan with the booth layouts because... YOUR CEL PHONE WILL PROBABLY NOT WORK.

You will literally be crammed into moving mass of people. I cannot accurately describe it, but you will be in in a moving mass of people pushing everywhere. It will be hot inside even if it is cold outside. You will get shoved. You may get stuck in a crowd and get pushed somewhere you don't want to go. Millions nationwide are going to be coming and the poor little Odaiba mobile towers are going to be overloaded like whoa. There is an app for Comiket but it probably won't work either once shit gets real.

You are gonna have to act and act with determination and immediacy, especially if you go on Porn Day and there's a very sought after circle putting out a new book that you want.

Good luck.
>>
>>11764358

brilliant, thanks so much. this is the kind of info i need. is the comiket catalog available online?

>>11764355

i'm a believer now.
>>
>>11764339
Aside from >>11764358

-GO TO THE FUCKING TOILET BEFORE HEADING OVER there are hour+ lines for the toilets and we have people literally shitting themselves every fucking time

-If you plan on spending any amount of time there DRINK SOME WATER AND BRING YOUR OWN DRINKS (not as bad in winter though)

-BRING SMALL NOTES AND COINS it's alright if you're going after the corporate booths which charge exorbitant prices for their stuff and will break big notes for you, but the doujinshi people abhor big notes. Pay in 1000 yen notes and 100/500 yen coins.

>*****PRINT****** a map of the Big Sight floor plan with the booth layouts because... YOUR CEL PHONE WILL PROBABLY NOT WORK.
Alternatively, what I do is make my own map with the booths I want marked and such and put it on my phone. Easy to go over it one-handed while in a queue or whatever. But yeah, expect to be offline because internet is going to be congested as fuck; I usually load up on podcasts, internet radio, Kindle books and such.

-IF YOU HEAD OVER ON THE FIRST TRAIN ahahahahaha if it's your first time just fucking don't. Not much of a difference with getting in at say noon, only a slight advantage. The motherfuckers sleeping overnight reselling shit on yafuoku are going to get everything you want before you so don't bother.
>>
>>11764384
>-BRING SMALL NOTES AND COINS

FYI with ATMs (if you can use them) if you hit the 10 + 千 (thousand) you get 10 x thousand yen notes as opposed to the 1 + 万 which will give you a single 10,000 yen note.

Pretty surprising how a lot of people (Japanese included) actually don't know this.

Also check the weather and if it's going to rain bring a large clear garbage bag to pull over your shit to protect it.

LOOK AFTER YOUR SHIT because there are loads of pickpockets.

BRING WARMERS pic related; They're cheap and can be found at any convenience store and make a huge difference when it's freezing.

Basic comiket Japanese you need to know

列の途中 = that's NOT the last line; Queues for stuff get so long that they get split up into multiple queues, and that's one of the ones in the middle. Look for

最後尾: That's the end of the line. A lot of places will also have a list of the stuff on the board with info on what's sold out (no real explanation needed for that, they're either crossed out or have a sticker over them)

Oh, he should know, there's two ways over:
Yurikamome line from Shinbashi and Rinkai Line from Oimachi. Both take about the same amount of time but Yurikamome is a driverless monorail so it's far more crowded. I always take Rinkai.

General Japan tip! AVOIDING THE PLAGUE!
Wash your hands a lot, because Japanese people don't, not often anyway, they rely on those masks to protect them when in reality vast majority of viruses are picked up from surfaces you touch -- and wonder why they get colds. Keep your hands away from your eyes, nose, and mouth. Be mindful of what you touch, particularly train handles and doorknobs. You don't wanna get sick on vacation. It sucks, and it's happened to me.
>>
>>11764412
Yurikamome's not THAT bad if you get on at Shinbashi. I get to sit most of the time, at least, and there's a nice view so I'd recommend it to tourists.

Oh and OP- The Yurikamome stops at Diver City too, which is the stop for the Gundam.
>>
PS

>>11764412
>and wonder why they get colds
It's the pollen, DUH

Didn't you know that pollen is how people get influenza, bird flu, and ebola? Wear a mask!
>>
>>11764435
Yes, the pollen. And the night air. If you leave a window open or work too hard, you might catch cold. Japanese people in charge of understanding viruses. But that's okay, because a lot of Koreans believe if you leave a fan on in a closed room, it will create a vortex effect that will suck out all the air and suffocate you.
>>
>>11764441

Got back from another trip to Akiba. Realized that most of the places I went to were shit compared to this one gamestore I found in Shinjuku.

Couldn't find any gachapon shift cars or ganbaride machines in Akiba, but Shinjuku had plenty.

>>11762993
Sweet, appreciate the help.

Tried finding a GW allied hobby shop near Akiba today and ended up getting lost. I'll try that one instead!

>>11763687

>>
>>11764747

>Hey, maybe we could hang out then!

sounds spiffy. when do you leave japan anyway?

and if you're there for a month, i strongly recommend you check out kyoto. 1 month is too long to stay in one city, and kyoto is absolutely stunning, especially now with snow incoming. i visited kyoto a few years back and stayed for just 2 days, and it was well worth the trip.

>>11761318
In Tokyo:
>Tokyo Tower (it beats Sky Tree, but both are worth a look)
>Asakusa Shrine
>Tsukiji Fish Market (gotta go early)
>Imperial Palace
>Odaiba (not just the gundam, ride the elevated train, and go shopping in the area)
>River Boat Ride
>Ginza Shopping (Expensive Brands)

To be honest I know Kansai more. If you head to Kyoto I can give you a list to keep you occupied for weeks.

Also, it might be too late in Tokyo (it is getting late here too) but the fall leaves look amazing in certain places.

I was surprised at the last of mecha stuff otherwise though. Mostly cutesy moe stuff.

>>
>>11768655
I didn't say godless, just unsettling. Akiba just had so much lewd. Reminded me of that Me!Me!Me! video and how it was speaking to the current state of the animation industry with pandering and all that.

>>11768688
Oh hey, I didn't find that, I'll have to look for it again, thanks!
>>
>>11768723

I disagree. That video is speaking to the current state of anime fans, how they bury themselves under 2d waifus and lose the ability to interact with human beings.
>>
>>11768757
No, yes, that's what I meant. I mean, parts of the industry has arguably decided to target those kinds of fans, but I agree with what you said.

Which is why Akiba seemed a little toxic.
>>
>I don't understand this foreign culture
>Thus they are creepy pedo rapists

I love how it's faggot like these who then go on to wail about how SJWs are all evil for generalising gamers.
>>
>>11768853
Hey man, part of the reason why I was in Akiba to buy unscanned doujins. Which I did, and which I plan on sending to sub groups who were requesting them.

I'm not against Akiba culture, I just think that it's dangerous to let it take over your life. Same goes with Western nerd/hobby culture.

I fucking love it, I mean that's why I'm here on /m/ and 4chan, but it's entirely possible to go too far.

Akiba's wonderful in moderation, you just can't get too swept away in it
>>
>>11768534
I don't go to regular Roppongi, but I will go up to the classy area in Roppongi Hills for the Christmas Illumination. Have you seen that? That is some amazing stuff.

It's right next to the US Embassy, and the Hikawa Shrine, which is the 90s anime version of Sailor Mars' shrine. The current one is the one in Azabujuban to the south, closer to Hiroo.

>>11768628
Depends on where you go in Ikebukuro. If you go to that one street by Sunshine Plaza where they have all the red light stuff, yeah it is, if you hang around near the station it's not so bad.

Right outside the station, there's a Super Mario pipe in the planter. Take a look. It's pretty cool.

Next time I go, I wanna go up to Gunma prefecture near Maebashi, that's where the monoliths in the forest where they filmed Gaim's Helheim scene are located.

>>11768885
Akiba seems to be mostly doujin culture these days; they're kind of gutting a lot of the old electronics stores. You can still find them in the back alleys and stuff though. Speaking of which, if you want to see the Secret Base Cafe, cross the street by Akiba UDX, go right down Chuo Dori (away from Manseibashi Bridge). Keep going until you get to a tonkotsu ramen place with a yellow sign and a small Janpara electronics store. Turn LEFT down the little alleyway and continue down to the intersection. On your right, there should be a computer store called PC PARTS & GAMES ARK. Turn left, go a short ways down. There'll be some brick exterior on your right, and it's called HOWAKYAN (White Canvas). That's it! The exterior for the Secret Base Cafe!

It's actually a doujin shop.
>>
>>11769404
Eh I don't drink and so don't like Roppongi that much aside from for the fish and chips. I'm more of a Shinjuku/Ikebukuro sort of person.

While we're on Akihabara though I have to say this

EAT THE KEBAB-DON

http://www.kebab.co.jp/akiba_terrace.html

Order either a chicken and egg kebab-don or a chicken kebab-don big boy with iskender sauce.

oh god now I'm hungry
>>

While you're at Odaiba, have a look at the Gundam exhibit thing they have on the top floor inside, if they still have it. Its a little overpriced for basically a panoramic movie, a bunch of large models like a lifesize corefighter, a gunpla history display and a gunpla competition winners display, but you just paid to fly to Japan so you might as well see it all.

The 1:1 Gundam's lights display runs for 5 minutes on the hour every hour after dark btw.

Is the lifesize Ingram still on display anywhere or did it get retired after theater showings ended?
>>
>>11769566
They're still filming the May movie and the theater showings aren't over yet.

Is it that building they blew up in Zankyou no Terror? It has a really unique presence.
>>

This, Super Potato is the shit. I picked up the complete special addition of Cyberbots: Full Metal Madness last time I was there for $30. That thing came with an honest to goodness Mecha pop up book.

Also, OP people are suggesting Kyoto and Kansai, I would totes recommend Kobe too. It's a rad place, and if you're in the mood to explore there is a unofficial Gundam bar run by fans called Bar Axis 7minutes walk from the city center. It's tiny, but the patrons are great and it has about 200 pieces of Gunpla on display, all made by customers.

>akihabara
You probably only walked on the main street, huh.

Go into the back alleys. You won't get mugged, but you WILL find a lot of smaller stores, a lot privately owned.

If you REALLY explore Tokyo a month or even two or three still isn't enough.
>>
>>11769696
>I was considering getting a cheap old console to play with my roommate on off days, so I'll have to check out Super Potato for that I guess.

Super Potato is overpriced rare premium shit. Just hit the main Traders for a $30 Sega Saturn and $5 games or something.
>>
>>11769705
Oh hey, that works too, thanks!

>>11769703
I went down the backstreets in so far as I had to in order to find Mandarake. The stores around Mandarake just looked like they were peddling like, clothing, purses, small electronics etc.

I'll have to give it another shot I guess. I do like how Japan has a lot of walking friendly back alleys and roads. Thanks!
>>
>>11769731
>back streets
The area behind the first Sofmap you see when you leave the station via the electric town exit and head towards the main road (i.e. where KFC and Kotobukiya's main store are) is where you should start and then just head north from there.

Fuck or drug? God nice gurl. Very pretty. Fuck? Fuck? Drug?
>>
>>11769808
I like Kansai a lot better than Tokyo.
People there are a lot cooler.
I didn't know about fuck or drug until I went to Tokyo. Them doods is fucked up.
Even the local biker gangs in Osaka were cool as fuck. They'd be hanging out and terrorizing the populace but they'd just wave at me and I'd wave back. Met some at a bar once and chatted with them for a while. They turned out to be super cool and liked rap music.
>>
There's very few "bad" places in Tokyo; Kabukicho and Roppongi late at night, backstreets in Shibuya/Dogenzaka, and that one street in Ikebukuro are about the worst I can think of but still not "bad" by American standards... I would routinely cut through the Dogenzaka hooker territory just to get across Dogenzaka.

In Osaka, anything south of Shin-Imamiya and Dobutsuenmae is sketchy as fuck and I wouldn't go there.

But Akiba is heavily policed. Nobody's gonna bother a white dude.

how much of the japanese language do I have to know if I want to visit Japan?
>>
>>11769940
In theory, none.

You can get by just knowing a few phrases, at least in Tokyo. My Japanese isn't good enough to hold a conversation, but I can at least ask for directions, and engage in small talk.

If you bring a phrase book you should be good.

Granted, the more you understand, the more you'll enjoy

When i was in Osaka, i live in a hostel at somewhere around Doubutsuenmae station. And it does look like a slum, though not as horrible. I didn't venture south from my place cause i dunno what's interesting there.

Also if you're in Kyoto. Try visiting the Toei Studios Kyoto. The attractions are the medieval Japan location sets that you'll see all the time in Rider/Sentai show when they time travel. If you're lucky, there will be a Samurai battle choreography demonstration where you can give it a try too. Pretty awesome.

Picture not related. Just a picture of a boy and a girl in a swing on a neighborhood i stay in Tokyo.

There's a sketchy flea market that pops up near Shin Imamiya and Dobutsuenmae on some weekends. There's a lot of odds and ends there, mostly wallets, crafts, watches and the like -- I was sometimes concerned they were stolen goods. -If you have the time, go to Tokyo Dome City during the weekends. They have Toku stage shows. It's the one you've seen advertised where the hero holding a kids and shaking hands with him/her.

-Also i've seen people mention about Den Den town. It's pretty good. I remember that i bought a strange PC Gundam game called "Typing of Zeta". Yes. It's Typing of the Dead but with Zeta Gundam. Also Mandarake at Umeda is as good as the Akiba and Nakano ones too.

Nigga, Tokyo looks a hell of a lot cleaner than places like LA or New York. Only certain areas I've noticed seem to have big problems, like Kabukicho. I'd wager the other seedy areas mentioned are a bit more run down as well.

However, the area around the Olympics, Big Sight over by Odaiba, is fine. Any of the major cities in Tokyo prefecture are for the most part just fine.
