Gunleon comes to mind. Normal mode was well designed, compact but looked powerful. Magna Mode is a deviantart tier upgrade, those wings looked incredibly tacky and turning the wrench into a pile bunker was a huge step down.

At that point the Getter had become something that was truly menacing and terrifying. The later scenes in the manga with everyone freaking out over the Getter assimilating the Dinosaur Empire wouldn't work with the goofy face and proportions of the original Getter. The Shin Getter was capable of much more imposing expressions and poses.

Mazinkaiser, for more or less the same reason OP dislikes Shin Getter, even though I like (manga) Shin Getter. Luckily Mazinkaiser is largely unimportant to the Mazinger mythos and can be safely ignored, while Shin Getter is pretty damn important to the Getter mythos. The only part I don't like about Shin Getter is the bat wings, so I'm glad they're drawn a couple different ways in the manga.

Let's not pretend that things can't be over-designed though. It can be a functional problem in serialized work that needs to keep itself consistent. It's why superhero costumes are usually pretty simple, for example, though that's not to say that any amount of complexity makes something over-designed.

Idiots use it as buzzword for 'not sleek' or sometimes 'not to my taste' because they think it disguises their bias. If you don't fucking like something, just be honest say you don't like it, and if you have actual concerns about something's worth or functionality, specify them. It's not that hard.

I love Shin Getter's football player build, sometimes I think the arm blades are a bit much though.

I always liked how Shin Getter stayed to the basic design constraints of the original. It's still priarily simple, rounded shapes making up a design that can be recognized as a product of classic Super Robots.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, I hate how Genesic GaiGaiGar takes a wonderful Takara/Brave mecha design and completely overdesigns it into an overwhelming mess of shapes and pointy bits.

In many ways, Getter is the antithesis of 'morality tale' mecha series, like Gundam, with it's anti-war vibe, or Evangelion, with it's focus on interpersonal understanding.

I'm sure the original has incredible merit but I'd honestly rather have the other one on my shelf every fucking time.

The original to me just looks like a red overweight batman wearing its underwear on the outside with Master Gundam's head and Optimus Prime windows on it.

The newer one looks unique, like it fukken lifts and eats its vitamins. It looks angry. Chunky, but not overweight: Stocky. Powerful. And above all, angry.
