Which version of the Hi-Nu do you prefer and why? I'm not

Design wise? Ver ka every time, if ONLY because of Izubuchi's original styling. That gloriously chunky izubuchi goodness has finally been do be justice, even RD is going full fat girl.

But Ver Kas generally have highly advanced engineering, though they often time come with their own issues. That's said, I havent built either, but for the Hi Nu I'd go with Ver Ka by default.

Really wouldn't recommend a ver ka for a first time. It's not that gunpla is particularly difficult to build, just that Ver Ka has a lot of pieces, man of them very small. There's also a matter of nub cleaning. Of course, if you have any actual model building experience, it should be a breeze.

The 2007 MG basically took the proportions of the original Nu and slapped some cosmetic touches of the Hi-Nu onto it. That's why it gets such a bad rep. I think both versions look fantastic, and there's nothing proportionally ugly about either, though I personally lean towards the recent Ver Ka because those Izubuchi fat proportions add so much presence to the design. The 2007 MG has a much more detailed inner frame though, if that matters.

I think Bandai lost a golden chance when they didn't retool the 2007 MG into a proper Nu 2.0. They sure didn't make the same mistake again turning the Nu ver Ka into the Hi-Nu.

No, it gets a bad rep because the liberties taken with the design make it look far worse than the original. Bandai should have just made it a Nu 2.0 in the first place if they wanted those kinds of proportions.

It doesn't help that they were following Izubuchi's guidance when designing that kit, the poor man's design skills went to shit around that time.

Why the hell did so many prominent 80's mecha designers go to shit from 2000 onward? Not only Izubuchi, but Kawamori, Okawara, and most recently Nagano as well. Katoki may be all over Gundam at thus point, but hell at least he's still every bit as good as he was in the 80's.

Took a break from designing to do directing and script writing for various animu and got rusty as a result. Rahxephon was his swan song design. He's directing Yamato 2199 right now.

CGI. He's still capable of great designs like the Nirvash, but anything he's made with CGI feels like a rehash of Aquarion, White Glint, or the Macross Zero VF's. He'd rather focus on looking at IDORUs at this point.

Bandai's fault for throwing him at Gundam SEED. I think that after that and being tasked with designing some of the more generic Gundam designs from the 90's, Okawara just stopped caring. We'll never get another Scopedog or Layzner from him.

Every time I look closely at those Gothicmade pictures I'm awed by how much tiny detail Nagano puts into each part. So much thought was put into it. Then I zoom out and see how much of a turd it looks as a whole and I can't help but just feel bad for him. He's really putting his heart and soul into these but doesn't even realize how awful they are. At least we know Okawara doesn't care that much about what he draws.

To be fair, his (not so recent) G-Breaker designs are pretty sweet. And he usually posts some variants at his twitter that are great and inventive.

There's also this (even though it's just a toy line as far as I know).

I like the left body better, but not the head. The one on the right looks like a Gundam face. The one on the left looks like a helmeted skeleton sticking his blue tongue out.
As for the body, the one on the right is a lot bulkier around the waist and legs and looks like it would have a harder time movng around with that skirt armor.
I'm indifferent about the color choices, though the edgeless stripes on the right one's fannels always makes me think the painter was too lazy to mask it off properly. I'm sure it's probably a lot harder to get properly faded stripes like that but it just looks sloppy to me.

Ver Ka, no contest. Stays true to the original design in color and proportions and has its own identity. The original MG is a sleek bastardization that falls more in line with the Seed Destiny MG proportions.
