>In cooperation with 15 major anime production companies and manga publishers, the Japanese government will next month start a huge extermination operation against 580 foreign sites which have illegally uploaded anime and manga contents on the web without the copyright holders' permission, NHK reported on July 28. While the government has started supporting the genre as one of their important cultural exports, there appears to be no end of illegal uploading of anime and manga via pirate sites, mainly operated by Chinese. The Cultural Affairs Agency estimates the loss caused by the Chinese pirate sites last year was amounted to at least 560 billion yen (about US$ 5.5 billion).

>On August 1, the government will start simultaneously sending requests to delete illegal anime and manga contents to the operators of the 580 foreign pirate sites which they have found. In addition, the operation will launch a new site to guide the fans to a legitimate site offering some 250 titles including the latest ones at a cost of several hundred yen.

This is the first page of stuff that you can watch for 1000 yen ($10) a month when sorted by popularity. Also, almost all shows currently airing at least have the latest episode put up for a week.

They don't have *every* show available. Sure, a lot of what's popular and currently airing, but not everything.

>>11149923

That's honestly a really fair price for that much content.
>>
>>11149908
After the recent exhentai purge I'm not so sure that it will affect only Chinese. Doubt that both events are interconnected but it makes me feel uneasy.
>>
>But it's up on streaming sites!

Which are region locked and won't let you view content (see Hulu and shit, I have to break the law to watch them so why not pirate?)

Not to mention the libraries still aren't great. I like older material which by its nature won't get put up there; also what happens when we have a situation like Daisuke where they take down series you want to watch? Or places where the internet isn't that great and streaming is difficult (which is more common then you might thing. I typically torrent at one place and bring it back home because my area has really poor internet).

I'll buy the plastic crack, sure. Model kits and figures, no issue there. But I'm not paying ridiculous prices for a limited selection of shows especially when I know that paying for those shows won't result in more in the vein I enjoy.

>implying piracy affects anything
>implying these aren't greedy corporations just trying to make more money
>implying they don't make money of DVDs/merch

Good animes sell, DVD/BD sales are noticeably high for their retarded price and lack of content.

It's not our fault many of the Japanese animes are shit and they fail to meet their expectations.
Its not our fault they sell DVD/BD at 80 or more bucks for a small amount of content.

What they need to do instead of going after pirates, is restructure their business model and sell DVD/BD at a reasonable price.

But that won't happen japanese market is seriously fucked up

>>11155915
the American reaction to piracy:
panic, legal threats, arrests.....but it all lead to services that tries to cater to the new demand, now you get digital music stores and netflix, not perfect but getting there.

Japan seems to be heading the same way albeit a tad slower, but Japan isn't dealing with local market like the US, they're dealing with international market which means more legal barriers to go through in terms of distribution, give them time and they might just do the right thing, if the service is good enough people will migrate to a legal outlet and the piracy issue will be negligible and everybody wins
>>
>>11155952
then I suggest you grab what you can ASAP before it goes away, if this whole thing turns out to be a dud then all is well but if this turns out into another megaupload then you'll be glad you have them before the hammer comes down

>tfw Chinese sites have some hard to find obscure anime and tv shows streaming
>tfw in order to watch shows you can't watch anywhere ese
>tfw this convenience is being pissed upon by Japanese business men
Geisha no likey oyaji pissu.
The worst part of this is China has gotten self-conscious about copyright laws and shit and some sites have started to block ISPs that are outside of the country. So if they get a single complaint they shut the fucker up for Chinese eyes only. Xiami did it a few months ago. Video sites like Youku have started to block certain content from outsiders as well. As someone who enjoys old Japanese shows the idea of no having access to series like Sukeban Deka or HurricanePolymar gives me flash backs of the Megaupload Purge. I don't know about you guys but I'm backing up what I can find. Cause you never know when it might be the last time that content will ever be accessible to the internet or even outside of Japan.

>>

>>
>>11156243
Torrent files can be stopped, and the sites hosting them stopped.

However torrent files themselves aren't illegal as they aren't directly infringing copyright, all they do is allow a program to share specific parts of a file with other programs on other computers. If you wanted to take down torrents you'd end up taking down a shit load of sites, which would cost millions in legal fees, compared to taking down 100 or so streaming sites that actually host copyright breaking content.

>>

$100 is a very reasonable price for a box set by Japanese standards.

Try $300-500.

Unless you meant the sort of "box set" where they go and split the series up into four of them in which case yeah, $100 each sounds about right.
>>
>>11156243
The report is hilarious around that bit.

>HOW DO WE STOP TORRENTS
>We could try coming up with a technological counter to block torrent connections. Might require time and funding.
>>
I don't think a lot of /m/ related things will be in danger. Hollywood doesn't care if you pirate old movies, the video game industry doesn't care if you pirate old video games, and I would like to think the same applies for anime.

That said, it appears I will finally have to buy a crunchyroll subscription as this will most certainly spell the end for currently airing anime. What a fucking shame too, because I fucking hate crunchyroll (shit steam quality, no special typesetting, half assed rushed subs that are mediocre at best, etc).
>>
>>11149888
>mainly operated by Chinese
Oh wow, It's fucking nothing. Enough with the damned fear mongering. This same thing happens every couple of months.
>>
crunchy roll doesn't air everything, right?

this is fucking bullshit
>>
I'd like to note that the report says

-To take out piracy you have to first provide reasonable legal alternatives

-Convenience is very important, and there's a need to consolidate stuff in a single place "like iTunes" (their example, not mine)

-Pricing needs to be reasonable

-Quality needs to be good

-First few episodes should be free so people can give things a try before actually committing

There's loads of other stuff too but BASICALLY what it boils down to is they say that they need to make a site where people can stream stuff in high quality conveniently at reasonable prices.

I don't think this is a bad thing.
>>
>>11158674
you do realize that crunchyroll is that site, right?
>>
>>11158679
It's not. Read the report.
>>
www.meti.go.jp/policy/mono_info_service/contents/downloadfiles/140414.pdf

The report also points out all the problems with existing legal channels (like Crunchy), including bad quality, bad selection, and bad translations, and says they have to be fixed if they want a chance against piracy, because most people resort to it out of necessity due to legal channels being shit.
>>
>>11158692
With no coverage.
>>
>>11158692
Yes, I'm grasping at straws even though the report points out that Crunchy is rubbish.

Dumbfuck.
>>
Look, I wouldn't mind paying $7 a month for Crunchyroll if it was the only way to watch currently airing anime.

The problem I have with Crunchyroll though is they don't air everything (for example I don't believe they show Zankyou no Terror so I would have to either not watch it at all or pay another $7 a month or whatever to watch it on a different streaming site), and their subs are extremely low quality (the people doing the subs are 9 to 5 salary men who work on extremely strict schedules and as a result the subs are soulless and poor).

As long as fansubbing is an option, I will support it, but if worst comes to worst I would be fine paying $7-$20 a month for anime.
>>
>>11158674
>Japan
>reasonable pricing

Yea okay. I'll believe it when I see it
>>
As long as they don't take Nyaa
>>
You know, I don't understand a lick of this, but I hope it means the end of HorribleSubs. Because they are directly ripping off Crunchyroll, a paid service here in the United States. Fansub groups work by making their own subs off their own translations, and use the TV broadcasts as their video source.
>>
>>11158718
The report makes note of all of these problems and recommends that the industry get together to make a site that fixes all of these (consolidating all shows on one site, simultaneous broadcasts, reasonable prices, good translations, high quality, etc.).

If they do make this site, Crunchyroll is done for because they want to consolidate stuff on their one, own site.

>>11158732

>Torrent files can be stopped, and the sites hosting them stopped.

Not modern torrents. Even if they took down BakaBT, /m/ could still keep all those mecha archives up. As long as we have magnet links and DHT/peer sharing, decentralized torrents can stay around forever.

I think some of the first wave R2 dvds were around Y3000 a pop, like DYRL and the Yamato movies. I might be wrong, though. I dug around a bit from my DYRL and all I found was a compilation disc of the Vampire Princess Miyu ovas that was Y6000.

for a little while, there, iTunes had saved the music industry. file sharing networks like Napster were making finding music almost effortless, compared to hunting down CDs, or digging through record stores.

but you know what's better than Free? Easy.
with iTunes you could get high quality downloads of almost anything you wanted, a song at a time, right to a device that would play it with no problems. no more pulling your hair out when you waited a week to download some rare album, only to discover that some faggot encoded it in OGG.

the anime industry needs to learn this. if you want to beat the pirates, give the fans what they want, WHEN THEY WANT IT. I pay for Netflix. if I had cash I would pay for Crunchyroll and Hulu. I got no problem putting out money to support the stuff i love. EXCEPT when it means buying Japanese, region coded BDs at ass rape prices, paying import fees, and only getting 2 episodes a disc. precious few shows are worth that pain. these are fucking cartoons, not the cure for cancer
>>
>>11158764
>www.meti.go.jp/policy/mono_info_service/contents/downloadfiles/140414.pdf
the term is "droves" not "groves.

and, that formula of making money through disc sales used to be the way Hollywood and early 00's cable networks paid for their content. the market for hard copies crashed almost a decade ago. that massive market contraction that killed anime in the US? that was part of fallout from the death of physical media, across the entire entertainment industry.

now, the money comes in from cable On Demand rental fees, Redbox, Netflix and Hulu, and other revenue streams. no one survives on just disc sales, anymore. The Japanese need to get with this. If they want to make money off the US market, they are going to need to play ball with Netflix, iTunes, and Youtube.

honestly, I am surprised that they even give a shit about piracy. I thought they had their revenue streams locked down by selling moe-shit to japanese otaku? why get pissy about markets that don't even factor into their creative decisions?
>>
>>11174850
>honestly, I am surprised that they even give a shit about piracy. I thought they had their revenue streams locked down by selling moe-shit to japanese otaku? why get pissy about markets that don't even factor into their creative decisions?

I wouldn't be surprised if this was completely and idea from their government trying to do some awkward sof power policy trhrough one of their most successfull cultural assets. Think about it - which country other than US is famous for mainstream animation? They're the only real competiton for US and might have realized that.
>>
>>11166680
good on you, but if nobody is getting paid, then nobody is going to do the work. Anarchy is great, and all... but... those animators and creators have bills to pay and kids to put through college. it won't kill you to actually pay for things
>>
>>11149888
animetosho and nyaa better be careful.
>>
>>11174909

What if you support a series entirely through merchandise but just prefer fansubs?
>>
>>11168705
torrents are bad for propigation because no one can track who is watching what, nor can they verify the sources, nor can they direct the viewers to a place to actually pay for something. there is no way to communicate with the audience. no way to build a brand that will leverage future sales. no way to get feedback from fans.

on Youtube the publisher puts up the song, they can see who is listening, when, how often, etc... and they have a link pointing you to the official site, iTunes, Goggle Play, Amazon...

Youtube is actually USEFUL.
>>
>>11174935
I think that is very ethical. I also think that very few people would actually follow through with that. it is a lot cheaper to pay $8 a month for Netflix, or sit through ads on Youtube, than to pony up $30 for a model kit, or some ungodly amount for Figmas/statues/swag.

also, i think it would be more valuable to the content providers to be able to control how their stuff is distributed. like, on Daisuke they give away the anime for free. however, there is also a store, on site, where you can buy merch for those shows. much safer than just dumping shows into the bowels of the internet and hoping some fans find their way to you with money for merch.

Looking at Daisuke, it seems like that business plan isn't working... but I think its more to do with the stuff they were selling. I love Lupin III, but I am not buying a $80 garage kit. better put up those Figmas

This.

To Funimation's credit, they've been very, very aggressive with getting their licensed content onto a variety of streaming platforms, often times months ahead of DVD/BD release, and before a dub is even finished. Attack on Titan was on Netflix last fall, subbed, only months after finishing its Japanese airing.

It actually makes me wonder if Funi has so much clout now because they have proven to the Japanese that they can really push these shows outward. The Japanese themselves fail to do this internationally (for the most part) and then wince when a Blu-ray fails to breach a few thousands sales. Pathetic. I actually *get* the collector mentality there, and the extremely expensive boxsets. You really do get everything with those boxes, certainly more than the average viewer needs, but those prices probably could/would come down a bit if they weren't so reliant on them to make back the costs.

Fuck, why am I arguing this shit still?
