So if they get a single complaint they shut the fucker up for Chinese eyes only. Xiami did it a few months ago. Video sites like Youku have started to block certain content from outsiders as well. As someone who enjoys old Japanese shows the idea of no having access to series like Sukeban Deka or HurricanePolymar gives me flash backs of the Megaupload Purge. I don't know about you guys but I'm backing up what I can find. Cause you never know when it might be the last time that content will ever be accessible to the internet or even outside of Japan.

The problem I have with Crunchyroll though is they don't air everything (for example I don't believe they show Zankyou no Terror so I would have to either not watch it at all or pay another $7 a month or whatever to watch it on a different streaming site), and their subs are extremely low quality (the people doing the subs are 9 to 5 salary men who work on extremely strict schedules and as a result the subs are soulless and poor).

As long as fansubbing is an option, I will support it, but if worst comes to worst I would be fine paying $7-$20 a month for anime.

I think some of the first wave R2 dvds were around Y3000 a pop, like DYRL and the Yamato movies. I might be wrong, though. I dug around a bit from my DYRL and all I found was a compilation disc of the Vampire Princess Miyu ovas that was Y6000.

and, that formula of making money through disc sales used to be the way Hollywood and early 00's cable networks paid for their content. the market for hard copies crashed almost a decade ago. that massive market contraction that killed anime in the US? that was part of fallout from the death of physical media, across the entire entertainment industry.

now, the money comes in from cable On Demand rental fees, Redbox, Netflix and Hulu, and other revenue streams. no one survives on just disc sales, anymore. The Japanese need to get with this. If they want to make money off the US market, they are going to need to play ball with Netflix, iTunes, and Youtube.

I wouldn't be surprised if this was completely and idea from their government trying to do some awkward sof power policy trhrough one of their most successfull cultural assets. Think about it - which country other than US is famous for mainstream animation? They're the only real competiton for US and might have realized that.

on Youtube the publisher puts up the song, they can see who is listening, when, how often, etc... and they have a link pointing you to the official site, iTunes, Goggle Play, Amazon...

I think that is very ethical. I also think that very few people would actually follow through with that. it is a lot cheaper to pay $8 a month for Netflix, or sit through ads on Youtube, than to pony up $30 for a model kit, or some ungodly amount for Figmas/statues/swag.

also, i think it would be more valuable to the content providers to be able to control how their stuff is distributed. like, on Daisuke they give away the anime for free. however, there is also a store, on site, where you can buy merch for those shows. much safer than just dumping shows into the bowels of the internet and hoping some fans find their way to you with money for merch.

Looking at Daisuke, it seems like that business plan isn't working... but I think its more to do with the stuff they were selling. I love Lupin III, but I am not buying a $80 garage kit. better put up those Figmas

To Funimation's credit, they've been very, very aggressive with getting their licensed content onto a variety of streaming platforms, often times months ahead of DVD/BD release, and before a dub is even finished. Attack on Titan was on Netflix last fall, subbed, only months after finishing its Japanese airing.

It actually makes me wonder if Funi has so much clout now because they have proven to the Japanese that they can really push these shows outward. The Japanese themselves fail to do this internationally (for the most part) and then wince when a Blu-ray fails to breach a few thousands sales. Pathetic. I actually *get* the collector mentality there, and the extremely expensive boxsets. You really do get everything with those boxes, certainly more than the average viewer needs, but those prices probably could/would come down a bit if they weren't so reliant on them to make back the costs.
