with this announcement:
>The Mexican Grand Prix will return to F1 after a 23-year absence after organisers agreed a five-year deal starting in the 2015 season. The race has been mooted for a return to F1 for a while and was even included on the provisional calendar for 2014, only to fail to make the final cut. The race- which will be run at the 4.421-kilometre Mexico City circuit - is being backed by Mexican businessman Carlos Slim Domit, the richest man in the world, and Tavo Hellmund, the creator and mastermind of the F1 USGP and Circuit of the Americas in Austin.
>"It is a fact," organising president Alejandro Soberon told a press conference at the Banamex Centre in Mexico City. "Start your engines, F1 will return to Mexico next year. This is Mexico's time." Bernie Ecclestone was not present at the announcement but did send a message echoing the comments of Soberon and welcoming Mexico back into the F1 fold. "I am pleased to confirm that Formula One will be back in Mexico City in 2015," he said. "I feel it is the right for F1 for and Mexico and I'm sure it will be to the benefit of both for many years. I look forward to welcoming you all to this global event next year."

Mexico having a Grand Prix is a big deal, now that there's two Mexican drivers: Sergio Perez, and Esteban Gutierrez.
>>11123802
There's obviously a massive technological difference between F1 and the regular street cars used in initial D. In real F1 they have aero modes and boost on just like in GPX. The computer software being used today is getting closer to becoming like the Cyber Systems in the show. and initial D is CGI horeshit that's why it's not allowed. Drifting isn't even about pure speed or going fast. It's a different kind of driving skill. Setting the car up for drifting is different than setting it up for a track day/fastest lap time.
>>
>>11127141
>>11123802
there are similarities between real F1 and stuff used in the show. That's why /m/en like George Lucas and Wayne Gretzky can enjoy Formula 1.
>>11127141
I used to watch the D1 competition stuff from Japan, but my country doesn't get the broadcasts anymore. The best part was seeing all the Nissan 240s and Silvias.

but it's like gymnastics, the winner is determined by the judges scoring system or whatever.
>>
>>11123743
Alright, this is getting out of hand.

I understand that Future GPX is /m/ material. But this board isn't for F1 racing. Even the last thread had way too much real life F1 in it. It simply doesn't belong on this board. You really need to fuck off with your off-topic shit.

only the finale of the tv series is kinda weird with hayato not trusting asurada after a crash, which by all means, is something should have happened by the middle of the series
>>
>>11127442
I think the trust issues were fitting, because in the beginning Hayato is really dependent on Asurada. but as his own skills develop he learns to trust himself more. So after that episode Asurada & Hayato get better at working together. instead of Hayato relying too much on Asurada.

as far as I know he pretty much designed all of them. but it's tough to find a detailed credits/staff list for the show.
>>11154477
The premise of the show is that in the future (21st century), Cyber Formula has replaced F1 as the top premier form of motorsport in the world. It's F1 taken to the extreme with less regulations. You're allowed to design the fastest vehicle possible, almost anyway that you want. The cars come with these A.I. computer systems so they can achieve even faster speeds. They still have regulations that need to be followed. Instead of the FIA they have their own sanctioning body called FICCY (Federation International Cruise of Cyber Formula), that oversees the races.

In the show normal Formula racing without the cyber systems still exists. Osamu at first didn't want to race in Cyber Formula and only did regular Formula racing because he was against the idea of using a cyber system and believed it took too much away from the drivers. (Just like how regulations in real F1 have affected the sport like ABS, traction control etc. arguably don't let the driver's skill shine through). And all other forms of racing like rallying, oval racing, MotoGP, also still exists. But Cyber Formula is the new top sport that the best aspire to and want to compete in.
>>
>>11162658
with all the regulations and technology and engineering in the F1 cars... how much of the actual skills of the driver really count?
>>
>>11162833

Still a considerable amount. The good drivers always perform no matter what team they are driving for. Senna when he drove for Toleman, Schumacher when he drove for Jordan (the one time), or Alonso for Minardi. Also one can look at the performance of two drivers within the team. True talent will always shine through, of course, there are limits.

I wish I knew myself.
We are starting to make unmanned car that can navigate in traffic, which is the great wild for a computer. On a circuit that is perfectly known I'm betting we could already create such unmanned racing car.

But that would suppose getting the Regulation to accept unmanned vehicle first.
>>
>>11163056

It's also getting the crowd to accept it, which might be even more of a battle really since one of the main attractions of F1 has always been the drivers, whether they be dashing playboys like James Hunt, calculating tacticians like Prost and Lauda or men of the people like Senna. Taking away that takes away a large part of the sportsmanship of the whole thing because instead of watching drivers, you're watching teams. And while F1 has always been a team sport, it's also almost always been famous for, and played up it's individuals.

in my F1 game I got stuck at Catalunya in the rain. That was really hard. And you have to win the wet races or else you're just a chump that relies too much on the chassis. The rain evens the playing field, that's why the wet races are always a chance for the drivers to prove their skills.

That's why in the show the rain races are always such a big deal. The performance of the aerodynamics of the car doesn't matter as much in the weather, it's more about driver skill to keep the car on the track. That's why in Double-One the first race Hayato wins is in the rain; when Asurada is lacking in performance compared to the upgraded rest of the field.

That's what I like most about the show because it throws in details that real racing fans would notice, to make it seem more realistic and intense. That's why it's not on the same level as Speed Racer, or Initial D. It's a proper racing anime. When it rains in real F1 all the other teams get excited because they know that's their chance to challenge Mercedes/Red Bull and get a good result. Drivers like Senna are defined by their ability in the rain.

It would be nice if SAGA and SIN got good subs because I'm sure there's technical details; like stuff about grip and braking that are getting lost in translation with the HK subs.
>>
>>11176745
holy shit, the subs of SAGA are super funky at best
so far what I've liked after watching the series, 11 and Zero, is that Hayato's machine more often than not is outperformed by the rest, but his skills is what allows him to make all those faggots bite the dust
also... Randol's car never changed did it? it still the same design of the one from the tv series
>>
>>11176938

Its the same base design, but it has undergone many iterations since the original. The most notable change is that in the final episode of zero, where it uses Heinel's rolling cockpit design, though Randoll refuses to ride it in such an undignified position. Odd considering his motoGP success of the TV series.

The constructor's championship is just as important as the driver's championship. So it's good that a team SUGO car won. even if it wasn't Hayato.
>>11178476
Kaga steals the liquid medicine thing that Phil Fritz was using from the Aoi trailer, then him and Hayato end up drinking it. That's how they find out Nagano & Phil are cheating. It's some kind of speed perception altering drug so Phil can handle the Al Zard.
>>11176938
One main problem with the SAGA subs is that all of the names are screwed up so you have to listen for the Japanese names so you know who is talking to who. And all the chassis names are screwed up too. Which sucks because there's all of these new car designs but the names are all messed up. It took me awhile just to figure out who Phil Fritz was and the name of Al Zard.

The trade-off is less weight compared to the aerodynamic benefit of a closed cockpit.
The equivalent of F1 with a closed cockpit would be the top category Le Mans Prototype class cars. They kept changing over the years but in sports car GT racing those were the equivalent. Nowadays it's called LMP1.

>>

Either answer is possible, Japan was nuts for Senna. Oddly enough, the production team went to an F3000 (i think it was 3000) race where Michael Schumacher had won, so they named a character after him. Only later did his real life counterpart go on to legendary greatness and pull shenanigans like his animated counterpart.

AISHITERUU YOOOO

My only problem with Super-GT is that their success ballast regulations are too strict. It evens out the racing but it penalizes winning too much. It's almost better to just focus on winning the last races instead. They use weight + a fuel flow restriction.

In real F1 the first rule they need to get rid of is the fuel flow limit of 100 Kg/hour. The new hybrid turbo charged V6 engines are supposed to be reaching 15,000 rpm but instead in reality on the track they can only reach around 11,000 rpm because of the fuel flow limit. If the FIA got rid of that flow limit rule then they could run at full power. It would make an immediate impact on the racing and make it better. It's too restrictive on the power. They should be allowed to use a fuel flow that can support reaching the max rpm limit of 15,000.

and the overall weight limit for fuel is 100 Kg. That is a lot more strict than the 160 Kg teams ran on average last year. So they have less fuel to work with overall for the race and the fuel injectors are limited with how much fuel flow they can actually push into the engine and use.

That's awesome.
the staff predicted it.
>>11186818
next year for 2015 they are going to change the rules to ban the dick noses.

The idea behind the rule is to make smaller noses and reduce the size of the front wing. The FIA restricted the overall aerodynamics by getting rid of blown diffusers, and made the size of the rear wing smaller too.
They introduced the nose restrictions in 2012 and all of the teams found a loophole and started using these "step-noses". So now in 2015 they are going back and making a new rule to get rid of the loophole and clearly define how you need to make the front nose. The dick noses are definitely the worst part about the new cars.
>>
>>11186898

they really should learn to that the teams will circumvent most rules they impose on them. Creative rule interpretations have brought victory to so many teams, such as Red Bull with the not-so-blown blown-difuser. I kinda wish they would open up the formula more to encourage more innovation rather than try to tightly confine the teams. Of course, then the teams with the $$ jump super far ahead and teams with no money fall further and further behind each season.

As such I always thought TV money and prize money should be inverted with the bigger more successful teams getting less as they get the lion's share of their income from sponsorship. Lesser teams which can't score good sponsorship would be able to keep up hopefully with the increased prize and TV money.
>>
>>11186992

> Lesser teams which can't score good sponsorship would be able to keep up hopefully with the increased prize and TV money.

You're talking about rewarding people for doing badly, which is not only counter-intuitive, but possibly open to exploitation. I mean, you're basically paying through the nose to keep these teams in the game even though they've done nothing to deserve it beyond exist. Doing so would encourage bottom dwelling teams to continue doing badly because they'll be paid to do badly, where-as if they do decently they'll get neither money from sponsors or from the FIA.

Also, I'm pretty sure F1 started out as a kind of exclusive thing, a sport of rich dandy's and playboys - and they'd probably prefer to keep it that way. What they'd ideally want I imagine is less crap teams who struggle to develop a half decent car every year and hemorrhage money, and more rich ones who can compete without a publically visible booster step from them. Minor difference perhaps, but it can be a big one from a press or viewer point of view.
>>

I haven't kept up with F1 much in years, but I've picked up from occasionally lurking /o/ that mercedes is dominating this year, is that right? I used to love F1 as a kid but fuck if it isn't dull as fuck sometimes because one team will have a massive advantage and win everything unchallenged.

Pretty much... The one saving grace to Mercedes dominating F1 this year is the fact that there aren't any team orders between it's drivers, so you've got a similar situation to 1988 where Prost & Senna won all but 1 race while battling for the World Driver's Championsip (With Lewis Hamilton & Nico Rosberg filling those roles for Mercedes).

>>11191146

Felipe Massa (The driver upside down) tried to make a pass on Kevin Magnussen for position by turning in on him, Kevin tried to hold his driving line and the collision lead to Massa's car getting flipped over.

Last year, I think it was...There was/is a mod that tried to get Initial D threads on /o/ to auto-sage and such, but the pull of that series is usually enough to keep the thread alive long enough to hit an image or bump limit; Not so much with a series like this...

And yeah, it's been kind of refreshing to see two drivers of contrasting, yet equal skill in equal equipment fighting it out for the World Championship again (With Daniel Ricciardo being one of the biggest surprises of the season IMHO).

>>11191245

Ah... Well, part of it stems from the fact that a lot of the little things that Cyber Formula predicted as far as the "Push-To-Pass" engine boost systems, active aerodynamics (To an extent), electronically controlled [INSERT MAJOR COMPONENT HERE] and others have actually kind of became real, plus the natural progression from the toy-like car designs from >>11191174 to, say, Pic Related and how they're rooted in real-world automotive technology adds a lot to that... But I generally don't try to talk about what's going on in real-world racing all that much in this thread and only try to refer to possible influences to certain characters & events that happen in the series.

THIS.

To me, Cyber Formula encapsulates the zeitgeist that was Formula 1 in the early 90's, back when no one knew what the cars were going to look like in 10 years time everybody were running systems that seemed like something out of science fiction (Traction Control, Launch Control, Fully Automatic Gearboxes, Power Steering, Power Brakes, Computer-Controlled Active Suspension and Ride etc. etc.)... Then a team allegedly made a car that could be controlled sans-driver (Much like the Al-Zard from SAGA) and all of the "Gizmos" got banned.

Still fun to watch this series and it's OVA's, though I have to agree with >>11187519 in liking Zero the most.

>>11191429

I initially got into it because one of my buddies had Pic Related as his "Trophy Queen" that he would run sometimes at my old, now-closed R/C car track...
>>
>>11134162
Already explained that in the older thread; how aeronautical engineers and F1 engineers are the smartest people in the world and the only ones capable of making mechs a reality. And fighter pilots and F1 drivers, and astronauts would be the best candidates for test pilots. Adrian Newey in his spare time outside of F1 designs boats for fun.
>>
>>11191475
actually, now he does boats primarily, and does a little F1.
he's still employed by red bull, but financed may be a better term.

>>11187323
The other teams are getting better and developing their cars throughout the season. The Mercedes engine is just so much better than the Renault and Ferrari engines. Williams switched to the Mercedes power unit this year and they are finally having success again.

Just like in the show how in SIN SUGO joined a new engine manufacturer/supplier. But it ended up giving Hayato reliability issues. because that new guy that was supposed to replace Claire didn't know what he was doing.

modern F1 is still exciting because the driver's are still pushing themselves and on the limit. Alonso comes in 6th but you can tell he was driving the wheels off the car with passion, so it's still exciting to watch.
>>11187323
That's why drivers are still important because they are the main source of feedback for the engineers and the driver's input helps research and development.
The new regulations can be pretty good with some tweaking. Just ease up on the limitations so driver's can be more aggressive the whole race.
>>11186705

They need to do something to solve the financial problems in the sport. You need to create some kind of incentive for more manufacturers to enter the sport. Car companies keep complaining that it's not worth it investing into the black hole money pit of F1. BMW left F1 and went to DTM and started winning. Audi Sport only focuses on Le Mans every year and their sports car GT racing. They spend more money than F1 teams focusing on one race, and Wolfgang Ullrich refuses to do F1. He said there's no marketing/advertising advantage to F1. That being in F1 doesn't translate to selling more production road cars. Toyota left F1 to start a top tier LMP1 program.

Dietrich Mateschitz purchased a low tier team like Jaguar and dumped his Red Bull energy drink fortune into turning it to a winning team. Marussia and Caterham need that kind of financing if they want to get good quickly. Selling Ariel Atoms isn't enough. The teams and FIA have been trying to cut costs down for years but the sport is still massively expensive.

and Bernie Eccelstone does some real bullshit. Good job expanding the sport out to India and South Korea. All of those Hermann Tilke purpose built tracks are going to waste. They should have more races back in Europe. They keep saying that the modern cars are too fast and they redesigned classical Hockenheim and SIlverstone. The only flat-out high-speed low downforce track left is Monza.
>>
>>11191967
It takes place in an alternate 2015 as predicted by early 1990s Japan.

This does not give you free reign to discuss events in the F1 world that have nothing to do with the show. You can either go to /o/ or /sp/ for that, but /m/ is not the place for it.

There's this American documentary that explains the parallels between F1 and space. how the sport has been influenced by post WWII fighter pilots and the space program and how F1 is /m/ as fuck. I'm not making this stuff up. I couldn't find it anywhere else on youtube. So watch it while you can before it gets taken down by the FIA.

The documentary is mostly a mash up of other F1 documentaries like Champions but it focuses more specifically on Jackie Stewart and the progression of safety throughout the years. It goes through everything from Fangio and Jochen Rindt to Senna in one hour. It aired in America.

You should check out the Blancpain Sprint Series.
It's the former FIA GT1 series given a new name since the FIA don't use the GT1 category cars anymore. It's a good mix of cars, and international teams with quality racing. The BRs have their own BMWs and they are always sending their local stock car drivers like Caca Bueno, Valdeno Brito. You see Piquet Jr, and Bruno Senna race sometimes too.

Huh... OK, so with all of the parallels and references and predictions and what-not that Cyber Formula had, how would a hypothetical NEW OVA work out? IE "What would the focus be?" Have the suits in charge of the money side of Cyber Formula start to try and slow down the cars toFuck over Hayato & Team Sugo "Spice up The Show"? Have a race be held in completely bonkers weather conditions because FICCY's equivalent to Bernie E. DEMANDS that the race go on and somebody gets injured/dies as a result?

I guess what I'm trying to say is I fucking HATE how this series is pretty much a relic of the past, what with all of the material a new OVA could use to create a decently compelling plotline.

>>11193527

Seconding this. The big grids, varied cars (Audi, Porsche, Mercedes, Nissan, BMW, Bentley, Ferrari & Lamborghini to name the ones off of the top of my head) and professional drivers mixing it up with competent amateurs (Along with terrifyingly bad ones like Vadim Kogay) never fail to entertain for me IMHO.

YES to all of these, even with the CGI and digital animation (Which, if you judge something like Redline, CAN be used effectively to make a decent racing Anime IMHO)...

well, just finished SIN, Kaga almost kills himself to win against Hayato
overall, I loved the entire thing, from the tv series to all the OVAs, although I think the latter could have used some of the different races we saw first in the series, rally, resistance, the weird ass tracks of Spain and Germany
that aside, this was a fantastic ride

Watching the documentary at the moment - 30 minutes in, and I really love the romanticism and simple nature of a lot of the older footage. Things like the wives doing the laptimes, the Doghouse Club, the scarves and goggles on the drivers, the talk about how the various drivers used to holiday together. These threads have had me watching a few different documentaries on Youtube actually, along with buying Senna on bluray and downloading Rush to watch at some point soon to see a dramatization of the whole Lauda/Hunt thing.

>>11196920

Also a pretty good show, even if I found the atmosphere of the ending rather odd considering the tone the show had set. I liked that there was no magical solution and the mother stayed dead - I just didn't like the fact that everyone just returned to Earth and seemed to act like space aliens and adventures were behind them and not something to ever think about again.

What other racing shows exist actually?
>>
>>11197060
The Rush hollywood film is a fun watch, they couldn't have picked anyone better than hemsworth (sp? I don't want to just type thor) to portray James Hunt. There's also a documentary on netflix about the '76 season which is pretty neat, I laugh everytime I hear the old as fuck Mclaren/Ferrari team managers still talking shit about each other to this day.
>>
>>11197148

This? http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0377tb1

Watched that a few days ago, and yea, the two team directors still being snippy about race penalties 20 or 30 years old is hilarious.

So we have Cyber Formula, IGPX, Redline, Oban Star Racers. Any other good racing animated racing shows/films?

There's stuff like the Dead Heat one shot OVA.
and the Running Man from Neo Tokyo.
and stuff like F which is real racing though.

I'd recommend Weekend of a Champion. It follows Jackie Stewart in the early 70's through every aspect of the entire weekend of Monaco, and it shows some nice moments between he and Jocken Rindt. Damn what a handsome man

some F1 penalties are straight up bullshit, and time doesn't heal that.
senna at suzuka comes to mind.
>>
>>11193573
I don't know too much about it, but there's a decent amount of side materials like the PS2 games have their own radio dramas and characters. Maybe they could use some of that to make a new anime.

so SIN is supposed to explain the origins of Asurada more right? Nagumo or his family had something to do with the original development. Ogre is the original Alzard before it was modified for Phil because he couldn't drive. So Ogre wasn't brand new. It was sitting around because no one could drive it. Nagumo says something about Ogre being Asurada's "twin"? Ogre is supposed to be similar to Asurada? The wonky HK subs don't help.

And better subs would help explain Kaga's whole training montage when he's trying to learn how to handle the Ogre. He's trying to get his skills to match the capabilities of the car. The cars specs are too good, that's why it's so extreme and can do crazy shit even if your body can't take it.

the best part in SAGA is when Hayato got kidnapped and Randoll had to come and save him. Clearly Asuka made the wrong choice.
>>
>>11200208
from what I understood, Nagumo's brother worked with Hayato's father in the original concept of Asurada, however, they diverged in opinions when Hayato's father opposed to the biocomputer thing, saying that wasn't how the true combination of man an machine should be
I assume that after that, he made the Ogre, a super prototype nobody could fucking control due to how beastly it was. Kaga barely controlled it always being in the zero zone to do so

being able to see the old footage is the best part of F1 documentaries. makes you wish you there.
We would have six-wheeled fan-powered passenger production road cars if the FIA didn't ban the future.
>>11195191
everyone on /o/ knows that the best Need for Speed game was V-Rally right?
>>
>>11204376
>We would have six-wheeled
Six wheels were inferior. There were too many technical problems with them and the advantages weren't that huge. They had more than a decade to try and it never worked.
>>
>>11204880
sounds like you need to keep on dreaming and always believe in yourself.
>>
>>11204376
V-Rally isn't a NFS game. EA published it in NA and decided to put the NFS name on it.

Hell, one of the V-Rally games was marketed as a Test Drive game.

Sage for off topic.
>>
>>11204376
>Need for Speed
>V-Rally
wat
also
>not 3
>or hot pursuit
>or underground 2
>or most wanted
but we /ovg/ now, so that's not a discussion for here.
>>
>>11209254
Yeah I'm from North America so we thought it was a part of the Need for Speed series.
Everywhere else it was just called "V-Rally". It's for PSX but it's still one of the most realistic and best driving games ever.

does /ovg/ play any F1 games? You gotta get the Codemasters F1 games (any version) or F1 '97 for PSX. I didn't get the expansion DLC but the Codemasters F1 games come with this classic mode that's awesome. You can drive all of the old cars like Lauda's Ferrari, the black & gold livery Lotus.

and hot pursuit grab ass underground 2, most wanted are all crap. The second best Need for Speed game was High Stakes or you might know it as Road Challenge in EU for PSX. It had damage and a career mode that tried to be like professional touring car racing (TOCA was another good one too). and it had all the European locations like Nurburgring.

The Cyber Formula PS2 games are good too. The best part is being able to use the characters and cyber systems from the show. Asurada actually talks to you when you boost on and aero modo change. I've only played Road to Infinity 4 though because that one has all the cars from the OVA up to SIN. I think there's a doujin fan made PC game too but I haven't tried it yet.
>>
>>11210973
come to /o/ and find the /ovg/.
codemasters f1 games are a little too arcade for me, asseto corsa has a few nice classic F1 cars and more to come we think.

Actually, as of the end of SIN (post 2022 season), he's a 4-time champion (http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E6%96%B0%E4%B8%96%E7%B4%80GPX%E3%82%B5%E3%82%A4%E3%83%90%E3%83%BC%E3%83%95%E3%82%A9%E3%83%BC%E3%83%9F%E3%83%A5%E3%83%A9#GPX.E5.84.AA.E5.8B.9D.E8.80.85.E3.83.BB.E3.83.81.E3.83.BC.E3.83.A0.E3.83.BB.E3.83.9E.E3.82.B7.E3.83.B3), but Road to the Infinity 3 has him also win the 2023 championship, making it 5, if that's to be counted. Also, it's interesting to see on that winner list that Hayato in the TV series is actually the first Japanese person to win a Cyber Formula championship.

But yeah, a new gen CF with an entirely new cast would be much appreciated in the snowball's chance in hell it happens. Some advantages of using CG for a new CF show would be freedom from using those same angles in animation commonly seen during races, the ability to zoom in and out of the course anywhere, anytime, showing more than 2-3 cars on screen at once more often, etc etc. Basically, something like what Studio Orange did with Code Geass: Akito the Exiled would work fantastically.
>>

>Basically, something like what Studio Orange did with Code Geass: Akito the Exiled would work fantastically.

Yeah, I think that could work for CF as well.

Oh, and Orange is also working on that new Under the Dog Kickstarter to make a 24 minute film, by the way.

Bump for an answer.

To the best of my moonskills reading JP wiki, the TV series was originally scheduled to be 50 episodes, but due to low ratings and bad toy sales, it was cut down to 37 (the language the article uses meaning to say it was cancelled, the horror!), and only in the wake of the show winning the Animage magazine's 1991 Anime Grand Prix, nearly losing to Nadia, and an outpouring of fan support, did OVA sequels get put into production.

Also, the series had a very significant amount of female fans buying up VHSes and such, which, considering the cast, is the most unsurprising thing ever. Kaga made the bitches wet, even IRL.

In a way, it shares too many things with the original Gundam: recognized success after 2nd run, great fan support (at least in Asia), the latter productions turn it into legend...
