Ok, /m/, I really need some manga recommendations! I haven't been reading manga for very long, so if anybody could help me out with some suggestions then that would be fantastic.

What are some good (preferably old) /m/-related stuff? What's translated in the past few months? I have already finished Kikaider and Devilman and they're fantastic. The 70's was a wonderful decade for japanese manga.

To Terra manga. 3 volumes published by Vertical, all pretty cheap, all emotionally satisfying sci-fi from that pioneering era.

you can watch the anime afterward, if you want more of the story expanded.

Yeah, To Terra is awesome.

Soldier Blue is totally Cyborg 009. I loved it.

Okay, not really old, but related to the beginnings of this kind of stuff.

Pluto, by Naoki Urasawa. Even if you're not familiar with the source material it is an amazing read. Urasawa at his best.
>>
>>11054693

Astro Boy is required to fully understand it?
>>
>>11054715
No not at all, though there are some characters you wouldn't know, it's not necessary for the story.
>>
>>11054715
not really but it helps to get how different it goes

20th Century Boys is good too

for other comics that aren't /m/ I suggest Jun
>>
>>11054694
...what the fuck is your problem? How can he use Google to find out what's generally considered good /m/-related manga?

>>11054715
Nah, but it helps. Check out a few episodes of the original to get the overall tone, but the manga plot takes it to another direction entirely.

Also, OP, Getter. It's basically required reading.
>>
>>11054694
You are a retard.
>>
>>11054715
also by all means read the comics for Astro Boy if you don't have experience with it
>>
>>11054636

Robot Keiji is great. You should be reading it.
>>
>>11054659
>Soldier Blue is totally Cyborg 009. I loved it.

That's actually why Jomy took over so soon, Takemiya was selfconscious that Soldier Blue he looked too alike so spoiler: he really does die and transfer the mission to Jomy as soon as he can. he remains a background character in the manga, compared to the Anime where they decided to let him die later on in battle , basically.
>>
>>11054745

But it's not finished yet, right? I really want to read it, but I'm not willing to wait a year for one chapter to be released.
>>
>>11054636
Getter Robo Saga, Kamen Rider, Kamen Rider Black, Mars, Mazinger Z, Henshin Ninja Arashi
>>
>>11054794

Many thanks! Reading Rider Black right now.

finally got off my ass and read that today with a bunch of Tomita playing in the background, good stuff

Read some Violence Jack (translation isn't finished but it's divided into different arcs with different stories), Shin Devilman, Cutey Honey, Getter Robo, Maou Dante, Kuro no Shishi, Five Star Stories (80's), Mazinger Z, Susanoou (not finished yet), Shuten Doji (volume 3 was just released), Gakuen Taikutsu Otoko, Mazinger USA. Not all of these are really /m/, but it's the kind of shit /m/ likes to read.

Also, to me, a lot of Tezuka's 70s-80s stuff has aged pretty badly and are stupidly mean-spirited. His art can't compete with Nagai's, Ishikawa's, Ishinomori, Leiji's, or Shigeru Mizuki.
Sadly, hardly any of Leiji's manga are translated and the few that are aren't even finished.

Did you finished it? I think it was a great ending personally, it seems to be quite divisive though. But Ishinomori is just like that. His endings are never entirely conclusive. Just thought provoking.
>>
>>11056136
>His art can't compete with Nagai's, Ishikawa's, Ishinomori, Leiji's, or Shigeru Mizuki.

It's funny considering he attacked Shigeru Mizuki saying that he has not drawing skills and the fact that he lost his left arm (Mizuki was left-handed) has nothing to do with it since there's nothing that the human body cannot accomplish with willpower. He also said that he could do better horror stories any time he wants.

Yeah, Tezuka was hardly the Mr. Nice Guy he's usually portrayed as.

I liked it. It's an Ishinomori ending.
>>
>>11056177

I think the problem is that many people read Ishinomori expecting a action-filled superhero manga just like his live action shows.

They could not be more wrong.

I really liked Kitaro before he killed off a bunch of main characters and turned it into a manga that appeals to children.
>>
>>11056228
yeah, toku of Ishinomori is fun, but it's at best "inspired by" the original works

Also I can see a lot of where Shin was going in the comics of Black.
>>
>>11056408

It was not the same manga. Kitaro's Night Tales was published on Garo magazine and it was an underground hit. Never really popular.

Gegege no Kitaro is a remake sort-of published on Shonen Magazine. This is the one that got a TV Series and is fondly remembered today.

Hakaba Kitaro is from the rental manga era. Both recycled stories and concepts from this earlier manga. Almost no one remembers this version, though, and the Gegege manga shared the same title at first. But it was changed to Gegege after the TV show debuted.

Yeah, I would like to see what was planned ahead for Shin. Apparently, it was an old Ishinomori's dream to do something like that. Just look at these pre-production sketches for Amazon.

Kamen Rider Eve/Gaia is exactly like that. It's about a organic insectoid monster gradually becoming a Kamen Rider in the traditional sense. He kinda looks like ZO in his final form. It's unclear if it would tie-in with the original Kamen Rider manga like the visual novel, though.

Man all I've read of Ishinomori at the moment is Fantasy World Jun which has some great compositions, but it seems to be a lot of fluff equating to >tfw no gf: the manga.
>>11056154
Fuck him the way Mizuki was still able to draw and mix the cartoonish figures with the realistic mad him a straight up boss.
>>
>>11056429
I'm actually disappointed that the Drawn and Quarterly collection wasn't the Hakaba Kitaro stories, I hear he drew a lot of inspiration from American pre-code horror comics and the few raws of it I saw were great.

Totally unrelated: In Japanese fandom, Persona 3's main character is nicknamed Kitaro

(Helps that Igor was voiced by the same guy as Medama-oyaji)

Fantasy World Jun is not a good starting point for Ishinomori. It was produced during the time that his older sister passed away. She was like a mother to him and he got depressed. She was also his only family member who supported his manga career and many of his female characters were molded after her. JUN was made so he could express his pain for her death in manga form.

For you to know how deeply she influenced him, he only learned to draw to show the outside world for her, since she was sick and could not leave her bed.

It's said that her death showed him that even the good and beautiful could perish without reason. This realization gave him a pessimistic and skeptical edge.
>>
Ishinomori needs more stuff translated. It's a shame that no one wants to translate Hotel (award-winning episodic series).
>>
>>11057139

Well, there's Sabu and Ichi. Also award-winning episodic series. And almost fully translated.
>>
>>11056469
Is there anywhere I can download or view all of KR concept arts?
>>
>>11054745

Call me uninformed, but Robot Keiji is what the robot detective from Voynich Hotel is a parody of, right?
>>
>>11057139
Yeah it kinda sucks, I think the best bet is praying on Happy Scans or learning French. Even with the interest in older manga resurging now, all the publishers seem to care about are their favorites which seems to be Seiichi Hayashi, Shigeru Mizuki, Yoshihiro Tatsumi, and Tezuka. Though I think I saw some more Ishinomori stuff being done on comixology.
>>
>>11057730

I wouldn't count on Happy Scans, they're suffering from a lack of staff recently. I like their work. Are there French scans of his stuff? Finding a French anon to translate stuff is more likely.
>>
>>11057732
I don't know, I'm not even sure if his stuff is in French. All I know is France has a lot more manga than America.
>>
>>11057751
>>11057732

The french translated stuff consists of Sabu & Ichi, Way of Ryu, Kuzuryu, Cyborg 009, Kamen Rider, Musashi and Hokusai. Many of those are already done by Happy Scans.
>>
>>11057318

Yeah, there's plenty of Robot Keiji references in anime/manga. Even Big O has one.
