Why do people hate SEED designs for having backpacks, but love it when UC, Thunderbolt and G-reco do it?
I'm not trying to start shit, I enjoy designs from all of these shows and if you don't that's fine with me, I'm just genuinely interested to hear the reasons for these opinions.
SEED's backpacks serve very little to no actual function aside from just being wings and glowing. As ridiculous as it is, even the Full Armour Unicorn's backpack is at least useful.

Its not really it's backpack, its more like attachments at least for Full Armor Unicorn. Everything in that image comes off over the course of the battle.
Because full armor guns everywhere is actually cool as fuck, for Thunderbolt and Unicorn.

I don't know what your tastes are; mecha is extremely varied. Chances are you'll like most mecha if you liked those, but I don't know that you did, so all I can do is throw things out there.
>Gunbuster (Space Opera/Drama)
My number one pick for people getting into mecha. A true classic made with passion, emotion oozing out of every scene, awesome character and mecha design, also only six episodes long. Directed by the same man who did Eva, and in my opinion far superior to Eva.
>Full Metal Panic (Romantic comedy/Drama)
Not the best show out there, but easily one of the most accessible. Very palatable to the modern anime watcher, especially one who spent a large amount of time on /a/. Received an animated sequel in Full Metal Panic: The Second Raid, which I legitimately believe is one of the best /m/ works ever made. Also receiving more animated sequels next year, so watching this will help you get current.
>Armor Hunter Mellowlink (Revenge Drama)
A spin-off of the popular Armored Trooper VOTOMS, but you don't need to have watched VOTOMS to understand this. This short OVA is basically a showcase of some of the most creative fight scenes mecha has to offer on account of it being about a 100% ordinary infantrymen fighting giant robots on foot. No supersoldier genes, no superpowers, just a big gun, a quick mind and a lot of luck. I prefer it to VOTOMS for that alone, even though VOTOMS has much more of a story. Still, it's 12 episodes vs. 50 episodes or VOTOMS, so watching this first might be a good way to ease yourself into the setting to see if you want to watch more. The main series VOTOMS is pretty high tier too if you do feel like starting there, though
>Mobile Fighter G Gundam (Martial arts/Action)
One of many works by Yasuhiro Imagawa and easily his most accessible. Chock full of passionate speeches, over the top attacks, and unfortunately, stock footage. But it's still a fun story and a great way to get used to the more ridiculous side of mecha

With out any faction wanking or bias, which Mobile Suit/Armor was objectively the best to come out of production from the Universal Century?
Whichever one had the highest performance.
>>14981281
This is an impossible question to answer as arguably it will eventually lead into timeline fuckery because nobody will agree on whether Turn A, G-Reco, etc are the real "end" of the UC timeline. And it needs to have pilots taken into account for Newtype-specific powers, which will bring bitchfits for that. Your thread is doomed prematurely by the mere basis of your question.

Actually no, because those aren't production models.

Is Genesis Climber Mospeada the closest mecha has to offer as an art? The avant garde styling of Amano's characters and Aramaki's machines seems to be something that the mechanical designers and character designers of today seem to avoid entirely.
I wouldn't be surprised if this is just a case of it being something of a pinnacle in both Japanese art and Japanese story telling. The themes of post-humanism as well as strength through vanity seem so common and reoccurrent that I can't help but see it as a, not only a classic piece of mecha history, but as a piece of art to the world.
Why is it that NOTHING has come close to matching the quality of Mospeada's art and story telling? Is the mediocrity of today's Japanese artist because of their blatant lack of skill, or is Tomita just among the greatest storytellers of the world?

Going through my first Gundam marathon, watched the 0079 TV series and LOVED it, took a long enough break before starting Zeta that I wanted to watch the 0079 recap movies before I start.
How do people prefer this? Why is this recommended, and why is this what made Gundam catch on?
It's so fast paced you can't even breathe, the characters (especially Zeon) lose almost all of their growth or depth, Amuro's growth is sped up so much it's pointless.
The original series had an occasional slow episode, but each and every episode played an important part in worldbuilding and character growth.
I just found myself cringing the whole time at all of the lost story, are the other two recap films better? Has there ever been an instance where a recap film is better than the series?
Please no spoilers for other Gundam series.
>>14981114
People generally really like the third recap film.
>>14981370
Is there some new content?
Also i've heard that the film trilogy is the canon version, doesn't matter to me that much but is that true as well?
Should I go production order or chronological order if I want the best out of UC?
>>14981384
Production.
Yes, third film's lotsa new footage. I dunno shit about "canon".

Start with Crossbone Gundam. It leads on from F91 and stars Seabook and Cecily. After that is Crossbone: Skullheart, which is a collection of short stories about various adventures the Crossbone Vanguard has after the first war ended. Next is Crossbone: Steel Seven, which is more serious than Skullheart. After that is Crossbone: Ghost, which hasn't been fully translated since Zeonic is a hack and dropped it. There's also Crossbone: Dust, which comes after Ghost, but nobody's translated that and probably won't anytime soon.
Have fun.

Super appreciated anon, thanks a ton.
I can tell this is gonna be a fun read.
Is Giant Robo the closest mecha has to offer as an art? The avant garde styling of Yokoyama's characters and machines seems to be something that the mechanical designers and character designers of today seem to avoid entirely.

>>14980999
Are we really going to make this a thing?
Chinese people flying around is not art
>>14980999
No one really denies that Giant Robo has some beautiful animation (on account of having a massive budget) and design work (although none of the characters were original). Most will say it has a downright incredible score as well.
Beyond that, it's just a kung fu movie with robots and a touch of retro science.
If you define "art" as something that defies convention, mecha in general has very little of that to offer and the only standout example I can think of is Five Star Stories. And I say this as someone who is very lukewarm on Five Star Stories.
Merry Christmas /m/, post your holiday cheer!
Other than that one episode of Big O with the Christmas Tree MotW, what are some mecha Christmas specials?

FUCK PACHINKO MACHINE
>>14980684
If there wasn't a pachinko thing, there would be nothing. I have no idea why people get so fucking pissed off of them, they're not replacing anything. There wouldn't be a new series, or new game, or new anything, it's not a case of "we can make a completely new entry into the series, or a gambling machine." nor is it a case of "if we make a gambling machine, we can make nothing else for this series." it's a case of "we make this gambling machine. Maybe we make something else with the IP, maybe not."
Also you wouldn't give a single shit about them existing if you actually lived in japan and could play them.
