You may as well watch the series, not enough of it was reanimated for it to make a difference as far as "less dated animation".

But you can just watch any more recent show if you want. The only ones that need to be watched in order for them to make sense are
MSG->Zeta->ZZ->CCA->Unicorn
0080, 0083, 08th MS Team, Thunderbolt, and Igloo all take place during or shortly after the One Year War but don't tie directly to the story of the above listed shows.
If you want to watch 00 or Wing, the movies go after the series. If you want to watch SEED, then SEED comes before Destiny. Other stuff like X, G, Victory, F91, AGE, Iron Blooded Orphans, and Turn A can be watched in any order since they're separated by hundreds or thousands of years and are therefore self-contained.

I recommend starting with the original series or movies. The series has a little bit more content, some of it is worth it, some of it is not. I personally prefer not to miss anything, so I started with the series. I think the movies have some new animation, but it really isn't all too prevalent, so you'll be getting the dated animation either way.

Oh god, I don't know how to feel about this. On one hand it means we might get a new old school styled super robot anime, and potentially new SRW material. On the other hand these are some of the most obscure mechs I've ever seen and I have no attachment to them at all. If an anime is not produced at all I can live with that.

the thing about Miyazaki's designs that makes them so gorgeous, is that he was an aircraft designer before he became an animator, his father owned an airplane parts manufacturing facility, so they have that classic aviation feel mixed with the fantasy style he developed at Toei doga

He defeated the 2nd one with a shot right into the chest exhaust.

The third one was just an overall bad match up for the Double X, outside of the Satellite Cannon. You can see Garrod tries to approach and fire a point blank beam to go through his barrier, but it still didn't work, and so he just got grabbed and beaten up until he was rescued.

He also did beat the Rasveyt as soon as he learned which one was actually piloted.

He got grabbed a lot in the final few episodes since they were running out of budget and were forced to use stock footage, but, yeah, it doesn't give a good impression of his skills. The Ashataron HC was shown to be faster than the DX + G-Falcon in MA mode though, so Olba has a significant speed advantage.

Another problem is that although the series hypes up his adaptability, it's actually lower than average if you compare him to other Gundam protagonists. Garrod generally got beaten up for a while, even losing battles sometimes, and then -afterwards- figured out what to do, rather than quickly reacting to new conditions in the middle of battles.

Yeah but until then he was helpless. If it wasn't for a Newtype rescuing him by using their powers to tell him which one it was he'd have lost.

That doesn't say great things about Garrod being skilled enough to defeat a Newtype with a Newtype tricky suit without being one himself.

Just watch it and make up your own mind. The same thing happened with me.
I went there with really low expectations thinking that the whole show has been spoiled for me but in the end I thought it was okay.
It also has many references to previous Tomino shows which I really liked.
