Don't remember the exact name, but there was Astro Boy story that fucked me up as a kid. I think it was a "what if" type of deal.
It involved cyborgs pretending to be parents and raising humans who were test tube babies and at the right age, having them fight in a death match against other humans.
MC falls in love with a girl who is later revealed to be an android. They activate Astro Boy. The end has the couple and Astro Boy dying.
Other story I remember has an American and Soviet robot in it who bicker quite a bit.

Not so keen on the Astro shows. They're not bad usually but they don't really get the isness of the comics, sorta like the Uncle Scrooge comics compared to Ducktales.

The Febral only appears in flashbacks to the final battle of the 7th Space War. It's there just to drive home the Janmil/Amuro parallels in a quick way.

Or do you mean why they didn't just use UC designs? I don't think they were allowed to. They threw a couple of UC parts on some of the Vulture kitbashes in episode 2, and also used a few generic military vehicles from UC through the series, but clearly couldn't show actual UC mobile suits.

The artwork fluctuates so much that really can take you out of the mood that the series tries to set.

And it's not like modern stuff where the quality can dip a little... It's totally different animation studios and styles.

Anything more than the DVD sets is extravagance that isn't required.

I still love the series, but it is the biggest, glaring fault of the series.
