They wanted to take over. Although we never really see them on screen (probably a combination of X's low number of named characters and the episode cut), there was a team working directly under them that was going along with their plans. It's why those Neo Daughtress in the last episode appear to help them even after they blasted the Federation's flagship.

Also, the Neo Daughtress were exclusive use of that team working under the Frosts, while the standard army was stuck with Balients.

Preaching to the choir, brother. AC3 and SL were some of the best gaming days of my life. I'd eat, breath, and sleep that game, every waking moment consumed by what tweaks I could make to better defeat my friends. Good times. I also agree that the PS3 games weren't as much fun, I did enjoy AC4 but fA exacerbated all the things I didn't like. The single player was fine, but the multiplayer combat felt really shallow by comparison. ACV had some neat ideas but armor type being tied to weight class, stability effecting reload speed, and requiring active clans to do anything certainly weren't among them.
So while I haven't been completely taken by the last few outings, I'm anxious to see what AC6 will be like, and wonder what aspects from the far more successful Dark Souls and Bloodborne game FROM may possibly carry over.

Vagan and mook designs were great.
The only wear I like is Orbital. All the other good designs stayed in the game and the MSV.
As for why it wasnt popular, I dont think the designs were a problem.

Can anyone explain charm and ship guest a bit more elaborately?

Charm affects exp of course, but what does the guest's charm do beyond that? Does it increase it for the entire group?

Then there's the skill "fortune". Is that for all the pilots within the group or just a ship-wide buff? Although I have it on my guest, I haven't really noticed much of a difference.

Yes. Just tested. Bought a level 1 Gundam, gave it some memory parts, put Amuro in it (he's maxed out). The Gundam got 157 exp with a Guest with 100 CHM, 111 with only 7 CHM. 172 with 130 CHM.

The Guest's CHM is the only factor here, the Captain's CHM is limited to the warship, evidently.

Fortune seems to only work for the ship. Amuro got 14 ace points with or without it.
