I hated the poor pacing in S1 and the useless arcs.
Also the show was really bad when it came to exposition dumping, you know you're doing something wrong when your world-building is on par with AGE's.
The animation quality varied in and out of battles.
you can tell they didn't plan out season 2 or most of season 1 properly, but this is more evident in S2 where the story is basically being written on the run.

Taht isn't to say IBO doesn't have good points, but I couldn't stand the fuckups here.

Don't care. QUALITY Atra was adorable, and there was a lot more of the detailed animation than there was of the QUALITY.

It turned the standard Gundam formula on its ear. People taking potshots at you while you do your silly patriotic slogan pose, pilots actually eliminating the enemy as if they're soldiers or something, complete lack of FLAWLESS VICTORY, opposing side isn't just cartoonishly evil space nazi, "WON'T SOMEONE THINK OF THE CHILDREN" gets told to shut up, idealistic zealot's plan to become king of all england by pulling the macguffin from the stone results in "LOL, NO.", and so many other things. There were a few flubs and rough spots like "kid brother I forgot about shows up right after I remember him" but on the whole the writing was great. Only ADD kids who weren't getting their sparkly beamspam fix complained about the low-action episodes where the world and plot were fleshed out.

Things are pretty bad for a Toei show when even Kyuranger's Lucky has more character while spamming catchphrases himself. I mean sure, catch phrases are common to begin with, but shouldn't be abused this much.

I haven't watched an episode of it yet, but I've not heard anything about it having bad pacing and dropped plot threads like 02, completely missing the point of the franchise as with Frontier or having zero sense of priority while being outright obnoxious as with Xros Hunters

Well, part of it is Gundam's legacy, obviously. Part of it is just because in space a giant robot is a less impractical concept than on Earth. And part is just because robots are cool and space is cool, so why not combine them?

It didn't really use to be this way back in the 70s, basically all shows were set staunchly on Earth barring maybe the last 2-3 episodes

But I guess by the time Gundam rolled around, people began to realize that mecha almost inherently increase the scale of a conflict, making some conflicts too big to contain on Earth alone. That and it was probably an attempt to cross over with other sci-fi elements. It's a little strange when there's enough advanced technology to build a giant robot, but not enough technology to leave the planet.

Is there a mech series where they try to go to the earths core™? One where that's the reason for mobile suits™? Or did I just come up with the next great series...

Yeah but he's the reason it became that way. He could have come back and make the Rebuilds just as existentialist and anti-escapism as the oriignal was, but he didn't.

I would pilot a MSM-08 Zogok. It looks pretty durable. Good for close combat with it's rocket punch fists, boomerang cutter blades and sword, but can also use standard equipment like a bazooka, a beam rifle and a sturm faust.
