It takes more from and is more akin to Flash Gordon. Which isn't surprising seeing as how Star Wars literally started out as Lucas writing a prospective Flash Gordon movie while trying to get the license since he had loved the movies as a kid. He failed though, and just decided to make the movie as it's own original thing anyway, incorporating some other stuff he loved in to the DNA of the film while he was at it.

Unicorn is a cheap Force Awakens-style fanservicy cashgrab that tries to emulate and surpass its predecessor without understanding what made it stand out. For instance, the Axis Shock was a MIRACLE that resulted from an ACCIDENT, not a superpower that can be turned on and off. The entire show was tacky and unnecessary.

I actually agree. Basically, the Axis Shock is the apex for Newtypes, and it's more-or-less an Act of God. Amuro did the impossible, and it cost him everything.

It's like, that should have been where Universal Century shows end. Sort of a "After seeing this, somehow you know it's all going to work out in the end. Eventually."

Technically, Star Fleet is a research fleet that doubles as the military when necessary. Usually they're supposed to be doing research and exploration .

No, not really. Federation ships are ships for the whole Federation. What we should be seeing however is that they are built all over Federation space instead of seemingly just at Utopia Planetia and other Sol system hotspots.

The shows only ever follow the ships that are human-majority, A) because it's what we're most familiar with and B) prosthetic foreheads are expensive and time-consuming to apply

The original MGS is an old series, and definitely has a lot of QUALITY animation and silly situations, but I still think it's something worth watching. You don't necessarily have to marathon it; just watch a few episodes here and there.

G Gundam is a straight-up super robot tournament show, so if you're after something different, give it a shot. It's nothing like the other Gundam series.

0080: War in the Pocket is short, but quite good. I'd recommend watching it. It also takes place around the same timeframe as 08th MS Team, as I recall.

You could try the MSG movies. I started with the series as well and also lost interest around the same time, but the movies grabbed me. If you do that, do go back to the series at some later point, as it does some character stuff better and a lot of stuff got changed around or cut from the movies.
