Nothing super specific is ever really said. Vaguely, the Federation has economic domination over the colonies and all of the rich people live on Earth. A bunch of the colonies get upset and decide they want to be an independent power. The spacenoid supremacy/Newtype stuff is kind of a sidenote to attract people to the cause.

Zeon boils down to a couple of things: They were considered a lesser territory by the Federation and were required to provide economic relief to Earth. Heavy taxation and no representation (if this sounds familiar, it should.) There was also a small addition that Zeon Deikun in some versions of pre-OYW Zeon lore believed that spacenoids were becoming Newtypes.

Of course, the Federation thought that all of the above was a bunch of bullshit and that Zeon Deikun and his movement was a bunch of horseshit. Unfortunately for everybody, the Zabi family agreed with the Federation, except for that rebellion part.

I can't really refute this. To a point, I'm not sure it's necessarily to go deep into why the Federation and Zeon felt the way they did, because the story is focused more on the results and the characters than the politics.

Okay....here we go:
According to narration, 9 of the 11 billion members of the human race live in colonies just before the OYW. That means only 2 billion people on Earth. Side 7 was only one colony cylinder, so those 9 billion people was divided between the 6 Sides. We know they didn't all have the same population, but if you consider that the total population means an average of 1.5 billion in each Side, so Earth only had half a billion more than the average Side.

Then there's the structure of the government. The EF Assembly is a democratically elected body, but it's an assembly of, by, and for Earth. There are more districts (and therefore Assemblymen) on earth than all of the Sides put together. So even if all 9 billion people in the Sides voted "Yes" on something, the representatives of the 2 billion people on earth outnumber them in terms of Assembly votes. Even worse is the fact that the representatives of each of the colonies are assigned by the Assembly, and live on earth, rather than being elected by the colonies from their own citizens. So basically colonists had absolutely no say in the government despite being the vast majority of the human race. Also the old men in Mobile Suit Gundam said that the first few waves of colonists were relocated to the colonies *against their will*.

Battroid mode is not exclusively meant for the ground.

Come to think of it, the very YF-29 you posted never even touched solid ground at any point outside of a hanger, if I'm not mistaken.

It's function is closer to a mobile suit; full 360 degree mobility in a vacuum and top maneuverability and attitude control in a gravity well. Ground combat functionality as an all-terrain vehicle is merely a happy side-effect of battroid mode.

Also, there's the issue of fighter mode being a...well, fighter, and thus limited in engagement options of ground targets whereas gerwalk allows the pilot a more practical close-range means of attack, and battroid opens the pilot up to various tactical maneuvers an infantry might take, such as taking cover behind an abandoned building, or just shooting a sumbitch up-close with maximum precision, not to mention the melee options if all else fails.

Because giant robots are cool.
