Japanese music licenses aren't insanely priced right now. There's a decent chance of getting them if they aren't being cheapskates, especially if they don't ask for broadcast rights. That's why so many anime on Toonami don't have the original OP/ED music.

The bigger issue is you either have to pay Harmony Gold license fees to "use" the terms "Macross, Variable Fighter, New UN Spacy" and the NUNS Logo, or you get into a court battle with them over it. And the rumor is Japan won't let anyone license the trademarks from HG because they do consider it theft that HG trademarked all that in the US.

It was okay, which says a lot since I think it's the worst animated Mazinger work that's fully subbed

It felt like it was trying to be two different things, like one writer that was wanting to make this sweeping epic who wrote like the first two episodes and the last one, and then another writer that just wanted to make a faithful manga adaptation. I think that's why I felt kinda let down by the OVA, those first two episodes got me hyped up for something that the OVA as a whole really wasn't in terms of plot progression and tone
