Can someone explain why people think IBO's magic space armor that makes Beam weapons useless is great and awesome, while SEED's magic space armor that makes non Beam weapons useless is retarded?

Most MS run on batteries, with PS being a constant drain. It makes more sense on the nuclear powered suits,but then a certain problem crops up during Destiny. PS should have become obsolete during this time due to how commonplace beam weaponry had become, but it's still being thrown onto all the major mobile suits because it starting up looked cool.
With IBO's setup, the nano-laminate armor is more like a passive ability in a world where, beam weaponry does not exist. It's still relevant without any drawbacks like PS armor has.

I hope I'm not violating a /m/ rule by requesting something, and I apologize in advance if I am. I saw an anime back in 1981 (best guess). Been searching for it since then. It was a movie, not a series. Aliens invade Earth. Earth is defended by a team of heroes who pilot air/spacecraft that can combine into a giant robot. The aircraft were different colors (of course), but they didn't always combine the same way. The red one (blond male pilot) was usually the torso, but the climax of the movie had the blue one (dark-haired male) forming the torso. Any help is greatly appreciated. I previously posted over at /r, but they suggested I bring this here. I can provide a few more details if it will help.
Pic mostly unrelated.

Watch the movie version, I found it was less boring, albeit less fleshed out than the OVAs. Also, bluray quality. It's worth a watch just for that.

I keep giving anime a chance to impress me, and it keeps failing to reciprocate with anything approachable. I figured if a flick is getting a release, even a tiny one, in the West, someone somewhere must think it’s got some appeal for non-Japanese audiences, but 009 Re: Cyborg is a whole lotta WTF folded into a derivative, misogynist, and just plain incoherent mess. Are there different narrative rules for anime, like the plots don’t actually have to make any sense? Someone tell me now so I can give up trying to understand the genre.
The superfriends gang here is kinda like X-Men meets The Avengers, except this multiracial superpowered team are all cyborgs, apparently: “cyborgs” is just thrown out to inspire geek awe without any explanation of what it means, and none of their superpowers appear to align with what we generally think part-human, part-robot beings might be able to do; the term is nothing more than technobabble. They’re called into action as skyscrapers are tipping over into one another in cities around the world, because Terrorists, and maybe it’s some sort of nefarious plot by the Americans? (The universal mistrust and suspicion of the U.S., which is not the great savior of the planet here, is the only potentially interesting thing about the story, but a slip of attitude alone is barely the beginnings of anything intriguing, and is never pursued.) Maybe some of the bad guys are hearing “His Voice,” and maybe some of the good guys are, too. Maybe some people obey “His Voice,” and maybe some people don’t. Maybe it’s good when some people resist “His Voice,” and maybe it’s good when some people obey. I have no idea what the hell “His Voice” is saying, and no idea who He is, and neither does the movie, either. It’s just another thing tossed in because it’s allegedly creepy or cool or mysterious.

Why is this the only AU Gundam that isn't treated like a puching-bag by the fandom? G gets crapf or being silly super robot stuff. Wing gets crap for too many things to list, Turn-A gets crap for being too slow/boring and ugly mecha designs. Seed and Seed Destiny get tore apart every week here for too many reasons to list. 00 gets crap for UNDERSTANDING, being Zeta/Wing 2.0, and Aliens. AGE gets crap for being kiddie and UNDERSTANDING again. IBO gets crap because.....I don't know, being more popular then G-Reco, I suppose.
But Gundam X? Nobody ever says bad world about it and always say that it's deeply underrated. Why is that? Because it got canceled and everyone feels sorry for it?

This is the first Gundam series I've ever watched (Only picked up for Orga and Mika BROTP OMG) and holy shit its so good. Are any of the other series this good? I tried the original, 00 and Seed but they were all shit and I couldn't get past the first few episodes, they were terrible. Is there any other Gundam series as good as IBO?
