Inaho is a tactical genius due to his unique approach to fighting the Martians, which is basically based on cheating and exploits rather than conventional military tactics. The Earth armies are trying to fight a war, when what they need to be doing is playing Dark Souls or Monster Hunter.

However, Inaho is a shitty pilot. His ideas are good, but he overthinks things to much to have good reflexes. Alcoholic dude and his classmates have to actually carry his plans to fruition, and sometimes that means making the choice between sacrificing someone he knows or losing a fight and getting everyone killed.

After meeting up with the rest of the army, Inaho and his team get drafted into a special unit of martian hunters. Everyone who has had any success at all against the martian Kats, be it tactics, piloting skill, or just good luck, is being grouped together. Inaho is exceptional, but not unique. There are others out there that are also pushing back against the Martian invaders.

At some point, Inaho makes an incorrect assumption about how the martian tech of a given enemy works, and it gets someone killed. The other members of the special team manage to salvage the situation, but it shows that Inaho isn't infallible.

Don't end the midseason with writing yourself into a corner where your only two options are to kill ALL of your main characters or make it clear that everyone in that rooms has too much plot armor to ever die.
Maybe what you do is Inaho is forced to deploy as the pilot whose job it is to ferry around the princess because they need every available pilot, and this way his job is just to stay out of the action as much as possible and let the actually good pilots fight. Sausbaum catches up to them and managed to shoot them down after an extended chase scene. Princess and Inaho are both badly hurt, but Slaine cuts a deal with Sausbaum for Princess's life and leave Inaho to die.

If we absolute must keep the robot-eye with onboard AI thing, make it so that using an increasingly large portion of Inaho's brain actually matters and has long term detrimental effects instead of just being an informed risk.

Like, Inaho eventually stops being Inaho and it becomes clear that the program is just completing the last objectives that Inaho gave it before he lost self awareness. Protect his sister, win the war, and (on the request of the Princess) "Save Slaine".

Once the war is over and all of his objectives are completed, the AI just sort of... stops. All tasks completed, end of line. Basically going into a vegetative state or a coma with no expectation that he will ever recover.

I would prefer, however, if by the end of the show the Princess has to get her hands dirty at least once. We saw this a little in the first few episodes where she used the grenade launcher, and the intro where she pulls a gun. I want Princess to, for the good of both Earth and Mars, be forced to put a bullet into Sausbaum herself.

The Legend of Black Heaven is about a failed metal rocker cum salaryman who gets picked up by hot alien babes because his music is actually a powerful energy capable of winning an interstellar war for them. So, they want to use his music to fuel their ultimate weapon.

Given the music and the idea of using music to win a war, I thought it might be a good substitute for Macross 7. It's kind of a cross of Basara's role in Macross 7 with Dai-Guard's slice of life/work and that really generic and dated early-2000s artstyle. Directed by the director of Comet Lucifer.
