They just don't make them like they used to.

>Someone asks (Ichiro Itano) about authenticity in animation, and his eyes light up mischievously.

>“Let me put it like this,” he says. “There’s this flight school in America run by retired air force pilots. They’ll give you one lesson in really fast English, and one safety demonstration, and then they’ll take you up to 10,000 metres. You have a co-pilot, but he leaves it to you once you’re up. So it was me and Shoji Kawamori, in jets, ready for a dogfight. All as part of the research for Macross Plus. I wanted to know what it was like to fly a plane, to be in aerial combat, and I was curious about G-force.

>“Each plane had a laser pointer, and if you could keep the enemy in your sights for three seconds, you scored a hit. So we started the dogfight, chasing our tails. I scored six hits on Kawamori. He was all over the place, but I was really good!

>“So after all that, I decided: ‘I’ve done the dogfight. Let’s faint.’ So I grabbed the joystick and pulled right back on it. I heard the pilot shouting ‘Itano! Itano-san! Mr Itano! NO! Stop!’ and the G-force pushed me back in the seat. I felt my head lolling and then there was black. I’d blacked out, and it was like someone had pulled the plug on a computer.

>“After that, it was just like I was rebooting. There was like static, and images, and the realisation that I was… wait… in a plane? Why am I in a plane? Why is there an American slapping my face…? Where am I… wha-? And then BANG, I’m back, after a minute unconscious, my head spinning as the co-pilot brought the plane down to land.

>“I stumbled out of the cockpit and down the ladder, and then I threw up.

>“Afterwards, everybody went to lunch. But the producer from Bandai took me off into a corner and just gave me a coffee, some paper and a pencil.

>“He said: ‘No lunch for you. You might drop dead at any moment. First, you must draw the storyboards of a blackout.’

>“So I sat there and drew the storyboards for the sequence in Macross Plus where a pilot blacks out. And that’s what we call authenticity.”

Why is there no longer any passion left like this for mecha animation, or animation at all, period?
>>
>>13631247
Because doing shit like that for a cartoon is stupid and wasteful as fuck and more importantly, too expensive.
>>
>>13631247

Because the average animator earns dog shit money and hasn't got the savings or the free time to be passionate enough to do things like that. Itano did that at a time when the economy was still riding pretty high, there was a lot of talent and love in the industry and the treatment of workers was relatively good (at least compared to nowadays). Then the bubble burst for good and all that went out the window. It's hard to have that passion when you're worrying about your next meal.

I can't wait for Hollywood to realize that just because Marvel did it, doesn't mean it's a good idea. Because it's already getting annoying.

It wasn't a good idea when Marvel did it

No, but it was somewhat bearable, and made mountains of money. Now even Universal are trying to do it with their monsters, and it's gonna be a trainwreck.

This is a pretty entertaining show.
I seriously couldn't watch 0079 the series, and I was scared Zeta would be just as shitty, but to my relief it's much better.
I understand ZZ gets silly, but I have a feeling I will enjoy it as well.

Z and CCA are nice.

0079 and ZZ are a bit silly.
>>
I find it difficult to pay attention to this show. Maybe it's because of the number of events that go on, I don't expect a kid's cartoon to be so involving.
>>
>watch 0079, enjoy it
>watch Zeta, really enjoy it
>start watching ZZ, stop 9 episodes in

gonna give it another go considering everything I've read about it saying it gets better

I don't even like Zeon and I think that's a shitty analogy.

> Man builds fleet of cars
> Finds bunch of people and forces them to take cars as their new and only cars
> New owners ask if they can modify cars to look nicer or run better etc
> No, only I get to decide what's done with these cars and you can't complain because you got them for free
> That's fucked up man, we own and drive them we should have some say in personalizing and using them
> Sorry, my cars, my rules
> New owners load one with explosives and run it in to the factory, destroying one production line and killing a bunch of folks

It's still not a great analogy and Zeon come off less evil than they should perhaps, but it's a lot better than your one. People like them because they have a sympathetic root cause, cool uniforms and suits and some good characters for the most part. Most of these people seem aware that they're fucked up and ready to admit it but just like their aesthetic or characters regardless, because that's entirely possible and there's nothing wrong with it. People with more nationalistic mindsets also like them because they find military governments good or something I suppose.

Explain to me how Geara Dogas are more useful than Doven Wolves. From what I can see from watching the two in action, Geara Dogas are basically just bigger and meaner cousins to the 'ol Zaku (nothing too special) Whereas Doven Wolves are essentially a miniaturized Psyco Gundam MKII (OP as fuck) and have a modified psycommu system to allow oldtype usage. Which is fantastic given how uncommon newtypes are!

So what happened to them?

>nothing too special
Exactly. You can either spend loads trying to make an army of super-high performance machines with fancy technology, or you can at relatively lower cost and effort make an army of good performance MS that probably won't be dealing with newtype magic anyway.

Biggest reason is >>13632978

Doven Wolves look shitty.

Geara Dogas look rad as fuck.

That's about it. In universe there's probably some bullshit about costs and so on though.

There was only 1 Core Splendor.
The reason for that was that Shinn was the only one who could get the combination system down perfectly which is thrown out the window when Luna starts using it later in the show.

By November of 1997, the world had begun to rebuild. The alien invaders had been neutralized, with the exception of “a small pocket of resistance in an isolated area of the African Congo”
3-17-1998: the leaders of the world’s major nations united, putting aside decades-old rivalries in the wake of the invasion
5-25-1998: the United States creates the Earth Space Defense program (ESD) as an extraterrestrial early warning system and global defense initiative. David Levinson (Goldblum) is named as director
1-8-1999: the ESD adapts alien shield technology to the F-22 Raptor, moving towards the creation of full Hybrid Fighters
6-22-2000: the city of Las Vegas, NV was completely destroyed in the war, and its ruins remain untouched as a reminder of all that was lost
8-10-2001: an isolated group of aliens in the African Congo — survivors of a downed City Destroyed — continue an underground war. The Congolese government continually refuses aid
10-23-2003: the U.S. Army fully adopts recovered alien weaponry for military application, quelling controversy with impressive displays of the weapons’ effectiveness
4-27-2007: Col. Steven Hiller (Will Smith) dies during a test flight of the ESD’s first functional Hybrid Fighter, and the world mourns the passing of one of the War of ’96’s heroes
2-21-2009: the Earth Space Defense Moonbase opens and is monitored from Beijing, China. The base has both offensive and defensive systems and is the first of several planned planetary bases
6-4-2011: ESD Director Levinson highlights the advances in consumer technology inspired by alien tech, including “the touchscreen smartphone, bladeless fans, drones, and airport security scanners”
8-19-2014: the next generation of Hybrid Fighter is unveiled — the T4 Global Defender, the most advanced alien-tech hybrid vehicle yet
