Honestly I actually look up the show if I see them in a game. Then I use my knowledge from the shows to kinda hardball the plot in said game.

There is some debate over that. Most of the sources about the creation of the manga are untranslated, so there is a shit ton of /m/ folk lore that frankly I don't trust.
Something along the lines that Getter robo was originally supposed to be a power armor thing, and Ken got talked into making a three way combiner by go nagai, or something. Like I said it's all sourceless.

So i just finished Turn-A. it had amazing music and art direction, and the characters all felt fleshed out (or at least most of the important ones)

Are they protesting against themselves? Kicking people off earth into the colonies was well within the lifetime of most of the people there by the looks of it.
