While /lit/ is normally about high literature and philosophy, let's take a little vacation. I'll post some pictures of my collection of low culture paperbacks from the 1950s-1980s and answer questions.

Some are entertaining to read, some are historically interesting, most are pretty cool aesthetic objects. The fact that there's an entire novel inside adds to their charm, but though I read a bunch of them when I started my collection, I now just flip through them because it's usually not worth it. Almost none are sexy, at least until the censorship collapses in America in 1967.

It's a cool book, though pretty rare. I'd watch eBay if you wanted to get it cheaply. It's fairly rare, though. If your school has real money to pay for an LGBT library, and you have someone willing to discuss that, I'd sell for the right price.

Fascinating collection OP. What started you collecting these novels?
>>
Who are your favorite legit lesbian authors (Bannon, Vin Packer, etc.)? Favorite legit gay authors?

Who are your favorite sleaze authors?

Favorite Whittingtons? Fave Gold Medal/Lion-style crime novels?

Which is the most consistently readable sleaze/porn publisher? Do you have a favorite sleaze/porn niche?

What else do you collect?

From what you've posted, have you read Intimate Diaries of Homosexual Geniuses, I Am Fifteen - and I Don't Want to Die, Sex Life of a Cop, or Suburban Phallic Cults?

I collect stuff like this, but I have to be interested in the novel qua novel for me to wanna buy it. I buy from everywhere (found a Rohan O'Grady and an o.g. Harry Stephen Keeler in an Alameda antique store today) but large chunks of my collection come from Kayo.
>>
>>5768106
I lived in Oakland and was already enthusiastic about book collecting. Visiting Kayo was like being at a museum where everything was for sale - and at prices I could afford. I refined my taste from there, though I still like the idea of having one of every animal.
>>
>>5768231
Wow, these are interesting questions.

>Who are your favorite legit lesbian authors (Bannon, Vin Packer, etc.)? Favorite legit gay authors?
None of the known lesbian women writers are great plotters or stylists. Bannon has her charms. Gay stuff is a little more varied. I like Richard Amory but not the Loon stuff, as well as Larry Townshend.

>Who are your favorite sleaze authors?
Robert Silverberg was the only longtime sleaze author who turned out consistently readable material, as far as I've read. Like I've said, I mostly skim books I buy, but few books stand out as "a novelistic effort" after the censorship collapse.

>Favorite Whittingtons? Fave Gold Medal/Lion-style crime novels?
Good question. Whittington at his best can be so good. My favorite is Backwoods Tramp, later released by Black Lizard as A Moment To Prey. Web of Murder is a delightful James Cain knockoff. Really all of his Gold Medal novels are worth reading. My Gold Medal/Lion recs are the same as most collectors - Charles Williams' River Girl, numerous James Thompson novels, a few by Davis Goodis. Try Bruno Fischer, too.

>Which is the most consistently readable sleaze/porn publisher? Do you have a favorite sleaze/porn niche?
Greenleaf. I don't have a niche. No fetishes. I love it all equally, though the campier the better.

>What else do you collect?
What do you got? In all seriousness, I have about a dozen other subject collections, mostly in books and records.

>From what you've posted, have you read Intimate Diaries of Homosexual Geniuses, I Am Fifteen - and I Don't Want to Die, Sex Life of a Cop, or Suburban Phallic Cults?
Intimate Diaries is weird but dull, I Am Fifteen is a weirdly campy holocaust memoir, Sex Life of a Cop is a classic First Amendment thing, Suburban Phallic Cults is fun.

Oh, and I'll add to both of those - I think Clyde Allison is the most entertaining "sleaze only" author that I've read more than a few books by. At the same time, it's hard to point to any particular work that's worthy of revival, because he's a bit of shaggy dog storyteller.

Do you have any of the PBOs that fetch massive prices? Stuff like the Gold Medal of Black Wings Has My Angel, or first eds of early Charles Willeford or Jim Thompson books? I remember reading an article online about someone who got a cheap copy of W. Franklin Sanders' Whip Hand before it was found to be a Willeford book and the prices went up into the hundreds. The closest I've ever come was finding a battered copy of the first ed of Jim Thompson's 1970s novel King Blood going cheap in a garage sale. Pity it's a terrible book.
>>
>>5768271
I have been seeing Bruno Fischers cheap and not picking them up! I'll buy a few now. I haven't started in on the Silverbergs yet, haven't even memorized his pseudonym, but I will before making my next trip to Kayo.

I too love Backwoods Tramp and Web of Murder. One of the other Black Lizards, Fires That Destroy (I think?) is also one of my favorites. He's pretty consistent. He did what I think was a western novelization and it had specific ranch terminology that clearly didn't come from the movie.

Thanks for the gay recs. They're something I know nothing about. I like Bannon's style and I have a soft spot for Vin Packer's young adult novels. I also look for good post-Peyton suburban novels, but I'm a bit out of my depth there.

I kind of collect "everything," too, especially records. If you still live in the bay, we could be nerds together.

I have a nearly complete Charles Willeford collection (see pic - I have a few more), as well as a small handful of Thompson books.

>>5768441
Silverberg's main pseudonym is Don Eliott. Fischer, like most pulp authors, is inconsistent. Have you read the Richard Stark books?

If you haven't read the Phil Andros books, they're justifiably praised as pinnacles of the gay pulp novel. $tud is the classic, but I really like Renegade Hustler, too.

I live on the east coast now, but I'll be in the Bay from shortly after Christmas to a bit past the new year. I'm in my mid-twenties. If you are similarly young and want to get lunch and go to Kayo, leave an e-mail here and I'll get in touch. Us young paperback collectors ought to network. I've certainly never met anyone with quite the same interest.
>>
>>5768502
Some great books there. They must have cost a bunch, or did you pick them up from someone who thought they were junk? The PBO of Pick-up goes for hundreds, while Understudy for Love never got reprinted and the cheapest copy I've seen was still near $200.
>>
>>5763040
You read the void captain's tale by Norman Spinrad? That's pretty cool, about women wired into ships and powering hyperspace jumps with cosmic orgasms
>>
>>5768537
Paid plenty, of course. You might find one or two for cheap if you dug a lot, but not a crew like that. But less than you'd think. That copy of Pick-Up is slightly damaged. I think I paid $40ish for it. Understudy is in mint condition, and I paid $70, which is by far the cheapest I've ever seen it go for in any condition. You're right to say that it's extremely rare.

Agh those Willefords are so expensive I don't even try. The priciest Willefords I have are all posthumous or near-posthumous hardbacks. I wonder sometimes what drives the price up of certain authors and not others. Like, does Willeford's art-consciousness give him crossover appeal?

You can reach me at elaborateparodyaccount at yahoo dot com, but I might be in FL or NY for Christmas.
