I chose to do a task on the Victorian era and I need to pick some novels that have connections (characters, ideas etc)
Also heard a lot about Charles Dickens but I haven't read his stuff before
H.G. Wells - The Time Machine, plays heavily on victorian themes like industrialisation, new discoveries in the sciences & technology etc.
I think some of his books trash his society can't remember the ones
Why is the spooks book so comfy?

It isn't the "spooks book" its a fairly major theme but there is more to it that that.
Because we're the unique one.
because he's preaching to the choir
I'm an English major... I love reading but sometimes I feel like I don't even know what I'm talking about in the papers I have to write for class. I either feel like I'm overanalyzing the text or that I'm just writing mindless drivel. It's frustrating. I enjoy writing and I wish I enjoyed it more in this context. Can anybody relate?
Also... books for this feel?
Let's discuss Epics, prose and poems.Which are your favorites? What are some obscure ones you liked? What is the most recent epic? What defines an epic?
I'm still made /lit/...
Has anyone read "hostage to the devil?" By Malachi Martin? Freaking the shit out of me!
Need a couple of poems from somewhat reputable poets for an English assignment relating to the topic of appearance versus reality.
I've been searching online quite a bit, but I think I just genuinely don't know where I should be looking.
Please help me! Thank you so much!
There's not really a haha moment in that. Dude is just living the life of his words desu
Is reading an abridged version of pic related a waste of my time? What more exactly does the unabridged bring to the table? Would I be missing out on a truly significant part/amount of the story?Asking for a friend.
yes read the original you cunt.
literature is about more than getting just the plot
im sure that wasnt on your ap test though
Is danglars from the house party the same danglars from the ship? Or is the house party danglars a bitch because mme is always in front of it... the only part of the book I didn't understand and it frustrates me to no end

What the hell man. Everyone knows that the only classic it's safe to read the abridged version of is Look Homeward, Angel. And that's only because you're protected from being called a pleb since the original was the abridged version.
why did sean young throw deckard's nubian goat off the roof?
What are your thoughts on Theosophy? I mean, it seems kinda flaky and weird, but that's kinda the idea isn't it?
inb4:
>Butt Guenon said it dum!
>Never trust a lady who looks like THAT
I find it intriguing but Guenon said to never trust a lady who looks like THAT.

Doesn't Theosophy kinda promote solipsism, relabeled "the monad"?
Is he the only hardboiled accountant ever?

What are your favorite nonfiction books or stories of real life people?
>Craig Vincent Smith (April 25, 1945 – March 16, 2012) was an American musician, songwriter and actor. He began his career in the 1960s playing pop and folk music and appearing on The Andy Williams Show. After experimenting with drugs while travelling on the hippie trail, he suffered mental health problems which worsened over time. He released two solo albums, Apache and Inca, in the early 1970s under the names Maitreya Kali and Satya Sai Maitreya Kali. After spending nearly three years in prison for assaulting his mother, he spent the majority of the next 35 years homeless.
Craig Smith is like if Brian Wilson went too hard on the drugs, disappeared to India and died homeless and alone.

David Sedaris is one of my favorite essayists in recent memory.
in one month you will walk into your local target and stride into the book section and see the usual Stephen king, Clive cussler, Tom Clancy, John green, Harry potter, but then you will notice and enormous paperback and will examine it closer to find out it's Joseph McElroys women and men. god bless you based target.
I got the epub. Surprise surprise it's meandering and uninteresting. Gonna stick with Gass.

Hey, /lit/. What do you think is the best kind of opening for a novel? What does a book need to have in it's first page or even it's first paragraph to keep you from immediately putting it down and dismissing it as worthless tripe, in your opinion?
How is this translation? It seems like one of the better options, along with McDuff (whose Brothers K translation I really enjoyed), but the Dr. Suess cover really throws me off
excellent translation.
Get the other cover
This is the literary equivalent of a chick who needs a bag over her face.
>someone got [meagerly] paid to make those abortions of covers
