Can someone explain why Pynchon gave Kit a bad end? Was it because he chose society over turning into a lunatic in the woods? And what did Dally do to deserve the same?

God is manifested as the Holy Spirit, the Son, and the Father.
The Father is the creator, He is, he is time before time etc.
The Son is the product of the Father's forgiveness, sent to down to take the burden of sin of of Man.
The Holy Spirit is God's imbuing into the Apostles and each baptized man to spread the word of Good.

For secondhand sources, check out theoi dot com. Absolutely amazing work.

Though not strictly Greek, I can also recommend Metamorphoses by Ovid (Mandelbaum) and Genealogy of the Pagan Gods by Boccaccio.

Book store thread.

What'd be your perfect book store? Anyone work in a book store or even own/manage one? Who are the people you usually get visiting your stores? Got any stories/experiences worth sharing?

I would make a bookstore that's also like a library. It would also have a nice cafe with some small snacks and coffee. Basically the way it works is you need a (free) membership to buy stuff, or else there's a 15% markup. But you're also able to borrow books, like it were a library. If you want to buy a book, you present one of the display books, and they bring you a sealed copy from the back of the store. It would also serve more of a socializing purpose, and would allow /lit/ people to talk to each other; unlike the silence requirements of libraries. I think a lot of people are secretly turned off by reading at a bookstore like they would at a library, so this is a good way to give them a sense of entitlement.

Also we'd have a fully stocked classics, philosophy, history, and science section. There would still be some of those trashy books for teenage girls and middle-age women, but it wouldn't encompass the entire store like at your typical Barnes and Noble.

We would also have recommended reading lists linked to your membership. So one could have a good order to read philosophy and science in, instead of jumping in and flopping around like a fish out of water. -- I think the cafe area will be separated from the bulk of the store, though. Here's a quick drawing of the floorplan.

I shouldn't get too excited about the idea, since no one would be interested in going to such a place.

1. David Foster Wallace was a genius and Infinite Jest will be universally acknowledged as part of the Western canon within 100 years.

2. George R.R. Martin is a scat fanfiction writer masquerading as a fantasy novelist and GoT is an abomination. He is also probably literally autistic as well.

3. "Slam poetry" inflames the same part of the brain as "The Turner Diaries" but gets a free pass because black people are now a priestly caste in American society.

Questions to those who started reading books with the goal to start reading books: How did you motivate yourself to read something?
22 posts and 5 images submitted.

I have a few

Try to detach yourself from the Internet. You will have nothing else to do if you don't have access to the Internet.

Start with books that interest you and are easy to read and finish, then move to harder ones

incrementalism. if you haven't read in years, you shouldn't immediately try to read the western canon in order. Pick the book that inspired you to want to read, and read it, taking as much time as you need

Start with small books, and always carry one around with you everywhere. Eventually when you're bored at a bus stop or something, you can pull it out and read a few pages, and once you start you'll be inclined to keep going.

If you're at home, you'll default to accessing your computer and internet over reading, so you won't read. Make sure you have access to your books away from home, during your commute or during lunch break and such.

What the fuck? Does it stop!? I want more stuff about the film and Steeply, the crossdressing cop!

>>
>What the fuck? Does it stop!?

It doesn't, but there's also plenty more stuff about films, drug addicts and Steeply. (Imho Steeply parts are the most boring ones but hey.)

Anyhow the occasional "cringiness" is inherent to DFW's work I believe, because this kind of reaction towards certain "deep stuff" (that might or might not actually be deep) is his fundamental topic.

Who do you think would be the better ruler, should they seize the Iron Throne?

The argument for Daenerys: Daenerys is clearly more compassionate and understanding of her subjects than Stannis. Her liberation of the slaves is pretty admirable, and unlike Stannis, she can make compromises with people. It's quite impressive that she was able to take three prominent cities in Slaver's Bay despite being a foreign teenager. Like Stannis, she can also dispense harsh justice to wrongdoers such as her crucifixion of the Grand Masters and has a notion of right and wrong. However, she often lets her own emotions cloud her judgments, and the conflict in Meereen is a clear sign that she's not the perfect queen we originally expected her to be. Her unwillingness to accept that her father deserved his downfall is worrying, as this means that she would possibly punish everyone allied to Robert if she ever took the Throne.

The argument for Stannis: Stannis has had far more experience in a leadership role, ruling Dragonstone for many years as well as being a skilled naval commander. The fact that he was able to rule the Targaryen stronghold for so many years without conflict is a testament to his ruling capability. His notion of justice is in a way admirable, in his belief that no good or bad deeds must go ignored, and that good and bad acts don't wash each other out. By saving the Wall, it's clear that he's the only King that cares about the threat of the Others and acts to save the realm. However, his extreme stubbornness is a huge misgiving, as it makes ruling a feudalistic kingdom that much harder. His refusal to ally himself with either Renly or Robb Stark was borderline retarded, and his cold withdrawn personality makes it much harder to gain allies. It's clear that he lacks the political pragmatism that men like Tywin Lannister possessed in order to rule the realm effectively.

Thoughts?
