What did he mean by this?
Kind of a shit post but I'll bite.
In his words, "GEB is a very personal attempt to say how it is that animate beings can come out of inanimate matter. What is a self, and how can a self come out of stuff that is as selfless as a stone or a puddle? What is an "I", and why are such things found (at least so far) only in association with, as poet Russell Edson once wonderfully phrased it, "teetering bulbs of dread and dream" - that is, only in association with certain kinds of gooey lumps encased in hard protective shells mounted atop mobile pedestals that roam the world on pairs of slightly fuzzy, jointed stilts?"

>Godel's incompleteness theorems are about self-reference
quick and dirty tip: if someone thinks this, you can tell that they only have a superficial "pop-STEM" understanding of the subject and don't know how the arithmetization of syntax works
>>9708229
it's like when biology teachers/profs talk about an adaptation's "purpose" in scare quotes -- the Godel sentence "talks about itself" in scare quotes
I think the practice of telling a false but digestible story as an introduction to a complicated topic is called "lying to children"
Hello, /lit/
I studied Spanish enough to get a minor in college. I'm ok at it, but have fallen out of practice. Do you have any good Spanish literature books to recommend for someone who is passable, but broken at Spanish?
I'm partial to philosophical novels, dramas, and comedy.

Don Quixote (1605)
One Hundred Years of Solitude (1967)
The Autumn of the Patriarch (1975)
Love in the Time of Cholera (1985)
Like Water for Chocolate (1989)
Yo-Yo Boing! (1998) (Spanglish)
The Savage Detectives (1998)
2666 (2004)
The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao (2007) (contains Spanglish)
I literally don't know what else to recommend in terms of novels.
Read anything and everything by Augusto Monterroso.
If you want poetry, the Machados and Lorca are excellent options.
Hey spalit, recently i adquired this book. What am i in?
Do you pursue knowledge with any goals in mind?
What do you hope to learn by the time you die?

Satisfaction and a bit to blend into the writing I'm trying to pull together. Also for my satisfaction.
On my death, I'd like to learn that things are getting better and will carry on.
Hello /lit/,
I thought Sex and Character was fascinating.. for the most part. I can't help but think his descriptions of women are accurate but exaggerated.
What would be a good counter balance for this subject that doesn't completely shit on women but is still eye opening?
>>9707872
But what if I like women for how shitty they are?
>>9707921
Then you haven't thought it through long enough, obviously.
hey there anons,
I'm currently writing an abstract short story about inner conflicts and struggles and I hope it doesn't turn out to be artistically valuable.
The problem, writing it and confronting my major struggles really leaves me fatigued and slightly mad for some time. I become even more antisocial than I already am, can't control myself as good and my brain feels like pulp.
Is there any way I won't go completely insane if I write more stories like this and confront the chaos even longer?
And I kindly ask you to restrain shitposting and your edginess, because I know you are quite the intelligent bunch and can be helpful if you want.
Thank you
I don't think you're interpreting the situation quite right.
>>9707745
> hope it doesn't turn out to be artistically valuable.
sry, typo; I of course mean "does". i'm really tired
>>9707745
OP, just take breathers, okay?
There's no avoiding the pain, but find something to uplift you in the meantime. This is, unfortunately, the solution to your precise problem.
So what the FUCK did he mean by this?
>>9707743
1 + 1 = 2.
Seems pretty clear to me.
I don't know what any of these symbols mean.
>>9707862
I know the alpha, beta symbols = they mean angles''
I know the E symbol = it means belong
I know the U symbol = it means union
I know the upside down U = means cut
Damn math classes were worth after all, I remember something.

Anyone else here a psychopath? I was diagnosed with ASPD last week, recommended me some books about us. I want to learn more about my chums.
>>9707624
You sound more like a narcissist. Get a better doctor. Or read BEE, whatever.
>>9707624
There have been some popsci books on psychopaths, namely the intelligent ones who don't get caught and end up useful as surgeons, or more destructive as CEOs
You could also search google scholar for the dark triad which includes psychopathy, machiavellianism and narcissism
You could check out life history traits and how that links to the dark triad
What are the dangers of making my protagonist and antagonist too similar?
>>9707571
Brecht already did it.
You end up writing a YA novel.

What have you done lately to find the Good, Anon?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QGL2SDGSeUY
>>9707514
I embrace the teachings of the Stoics, you degenerate Epicurean.
>>9708570
They're rather compatible. Negative hedonism doesn't step on the toes of the more spooky aspects of the Stoics. Just the "worldview". And there's nothing "degenerate" about it, you Christcuck.
Do Stoics not care for the idea of the Good?
>>9708594
Relax, anon, it was a joke. I have always found that they arrive at similar conclusions via different means. I respect the Epicureans quite a lot.
As far as Christcuck goes, I'm not sure how you came to that conclusion.
Who is your favorite transgender writer?
Mine is the same as The New Yorker's, Ernest Hemingway

Does anyone know if this edition is any good? I've enough of "complete works of" type of stuff that actually isn't complete at all.
Norton 3rd ed is the way to go brah
But if you can find it, buy the Riverside
>>9707439
This looks like the Barnes and Nobles edition. If it is, don't buy it! It is overpriced shit quality garbage,
>>9707439
Seems like it would be ridiculously unwieldy unless you're looking for a display piece.
What is THE most interesting book you have ever read? One you couldn't drop because of how interesting and fun it was? Pic related interesting?
Has anyone here read Bixby?
>>9707455
not really you?
>>9707502
No. I saw the movie and liked it, was wondering if he'd written anything else as enjoyable.
