I hardly come here so I don't know if this has been done to death yet, but what did /lit/ think of Ready Player One?

I thought it was pretty shitty. Flat characters, predictable, zero depth, talked down to the reader, all tell and no show. Also that diversity moral and the literal Deus ex Machina near the end were both retarded.

I doubt you'll find anyone here who really disagrees with that.

It seemed cool at first but then went downhill fast. The worst part is when me basicaly moped for like 2 chapters about art3mis.

>>9714284
Ready Player One is the /lit/ equivalent of Sword Art Online. Even from the perspective of someone who likes reading books for only entertainment purposes sometimes, it's shiiiit.

hi /lit/
i was sitting at the cafe outside, reading a book (doesnt matter what book) related to philosopy and homeless guy came up for some change. I refused and he asks:
-Why you do this? Why you read?
-To be smarter?- i replied
-Why?
-To know more obviously
-Why?-and right then i was pissed off dont wanna talk to trash
When you know more you feel on every place on earth like in home
-bullshit.
Later then i started to question myslelf as an above average educated person
Why do you guys read for?

I would too given the way you type

Why haven't you read this yet? Afraid to find out your current vocabulary was implicitly finalized? Afraid that you're life will collapse once you've rejected metaphysical essences once and for all?

I've been meaning to read that.

I don't think so. The plot and cast of characters aren't hard to grasp, it's the vague structure and unstable narrator that make it confusing. It's not particularly complex at all.

Flannery O'Connor

Redmeme me on Ballard. If there is a polar scale with Palauniuk and PK Dick at either end, where would Ballard's mark be?

I don't know that your scale is meaningful, but Ballard and Dick are frequently grouped together as new wavers. They're quite distinct stylistically, but both excel at offbeat speculative fiction in which reality is broken down and/or reformulated. Dick is more overtly ontological whereas Ballard treats this as a more sociological phenomenon, but fans of one tend to appreciate the other.

Stephen King is famously hated on by /lit/izens.

The reasons are justifiable. Basically, his writing sucks.

He's considered a talent-less hack on here.

That said, no one on /lit/ has ever produced any proof of published material, and therefore protected themselves nicely from being vulnerable.

Your diary desu, and critique threads don't matter as they're excerpts from personal writing. Even if a piece of published material is posted, it's not enough to be examined and critiqued properly. And I'm saying all this thinking that someone here is a published author/poet.

What is clear, though, is that /lit/ is full of aspiring writers.

Yet there's nothing from anyone to show, nothing published and better than the uber-trashy Mr. King.

When will this hypocrisy end?

>King's a joke!
>I'm a writer!
>*writes*
>Writing makes King seem like Cervantes

This is a board on 4chan, what would we possibly gain by providing evidence?

It also seems you don't understand that not everyone shares the same opinions, despite sharing the 'Anonymous, label, and that people are allowed to be critical without having produced anything themselves. 'Critic' is a vocation in itself.
You don't appear to be terribly bright.

Bullshit, Stephen King is hated by tourists from /tv/. Anyone who matters realizes that Dark Tower is a very important series.

What are some of your favorite traveling or adventure books?

Serious or lighthearted, doesn't matter.

Narziss and Goldmund is a book about travelling the land is extremely good, short too, so worth the read even without knowing much about it (I actually went in completely blind, having already read ~5 Hesse works)

Grapes of Wrath is an obvious answer for the story of a travelling group, and it is extremely good.

Thus Spoke Zarathustra is a philosipcal text with travelling, and if you haven't already started with the Greeks I'd highly recommend The Odyssey.

Finally, adventure? Moby Dick. Read Moby Dick.
>>
>>9714076
Recommending Moby dick when someone asks for adventure is fucking retarded desu.
>>
>>9714186
Not him but how is that retarded? That's a good example of an adventure.

the thirties had a lot of hard living authors of that type. of course they're dead by now, it doesn't make you immortal to be any of those things.

I suppose being dead makes you inferior.

So how do you improve your attention span?

When I read a really good paragraph from a book, article or study about one of my favorite subjects I always have to stand up and pace back and forth in my apartment for an hour or so and drink a few liters of water.

I feel that this novel is objectively brilliant for several reasons, and personally find it subjectively so as well. Especially speaking as someone who scores in the top 2% or better on every intelligence test, who for better and worse has done unlikely-to-"impossible" things myself, I am terribly grateful to see such a realistic, authentic and relatable character as Kvothe. I've grown out of, or never shared but can understand, lots of his personality traits, but it is such a joy to be able to experience an intelligent character for once, rather than a caricature attempting to be passed off in it's place.
As well as the beauty of these books, the depth, and how they are true on multiple levels, with their myriad of hidden secrets. The ways they reflect the reader and illuminate so many biases and preconceptions, and illustrate different preferences and how so many can not understand or respect others' opinions (even when they believe they do [which is meant generally]). I read these and weep with joy and understanding, and sometimes struggle not to immediately begin again with the first novel after finishing the second.

I concur. When Kvothe nailed his lute performance after breaking a string, I kid you not, I wept for ten consecutive minutes. I'd like to see Joyce arouse such emotions in me.
