I'm currently reading Max Havelaar and I'm wondering what Indonesian and Dutch people are thinking about this book.

Do you agree with what's written in there?
Was it a good read?

Or just say anything you like about it

I correct myself; I'm also wondering what other people are thinking about it, not just Indonesian and Dutch

Little past half year now /lit/

what have you read this year?

there are like three of these threads.
>>
>>9755518
Over this half of the year I have read (on this order):
Animal Farm (average)
More Than A Game (fucking garbage that should be set on fire)
The Paper Menagerie and Other Stories (bretty good, know it isn't too /lit/ though)
The Vegetarian (winner of the Man Booker 2015(?) and definitely good)
A General Theory of Oblivion (shortlisted for the Man Booker Award and I found it rather average)
Echos In Death (set it on fucking fire; this was awful. I went into a store and asked for that specific stores top seller, just to see what it'd be like.. didn't even realize it was the worst kind of trope ass police procedural bullshit until I got home.)
The Book Thief (a little above average)
Lord of the Flies (good)
Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (very good)
Perfume (fantastic)
Death of a Salesman (a play.. but fantastic.)
The Alchemist (just above average, but goddamn.. what a meme)
Slaughterhouse-Five (personal favourite from early high school: fantastic)
Coraline (average by child standards)
Smoke and Mirrors: Short Fiction and Illusions (bretty gud)
The Old Man and the Sea (really good)
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (fantastic)
Crime and Punishment (holy fuck.. incredible - well beyond fantastic.)
Notes from Underground (fantastic)
The Brothers Karamazov (incredible)

That should be about 19 titles. That's more than two a month so I'd say a relatively good half year so far.

Need to write a creative short story based on Katherine Mansfield's stories for school,
I suck at creative writing and I'm only in the class because the teacher is hot.
It's due tomorrow, can anybody help?
The story needs to have a symbol and express the views and values of Mansfield and be between 900-1100 words.
Any ideas for Plot, Symbols etc.

I'd like to get into film. What are good books about cinema and its history?
8 posts and 1 images submitted.

skip books until you want to learn specific details. for orientation and general 'redpilling' use youtube:

https://www.youtube.com/user/everyframeapainting
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCL5kBJmBUVFLYBDiSiK1VDw
a little more technical than formal, but good overview over film history:
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSFAYalJ2Q7Tm_WmLgetmeg

also I'd like to mention that there are a lot of aspects to get into in cinema. you can start reading classic scripts like pulp fiction, you can get into photography to appreciate camera stuff, you can study editing and fap to satoshi kon, etc etc.
>>
Glad I found this interesting thread.

Does anyone in here do MDMA? If so, have you noticed it perniciously affecting your verbal abilities and therefore your writing?
I did it 4 times this year, last of it being a massive binge in the first day of June. It might.

I have dedicated months to A Song of Ice and Fire reading the incredibly long books, treading through some of the more tedious moments, and spending hours of my day reading the series. Did I seriously waste my time? George R. R Martin is an old fuck and he has two more books to write and he usually takes years. I fear that he will die and the series will never be finished. He also made it clear that he would not have someone else finish the series for him in fear of decline in quality. I feel like he will die and the fear has escalated so far that I haven't finished A Dance with Dragons.

Actually OP, you wasted your time by reading young adult pseudoliterature. It has nothing to do with Martin's age.

>I have dedicated months to A Song of Ice and Fire reading the incredibly long books
Does it actually take people that long to read this shit? Has the education system in the first world actually failed this substantially that people can't read simple genre fiction at a reasonable pace?
>>
>it's not the destination, but the journey blah blah blah

Even if he never finishes the series, there's tons of tons of other books to read. No reason to get hung up on one author. Stop complaining, and start enjoying new things.

if you unironically think Danielewski has merit read Only Revolutions. Its the wankiest piece of fiction I've ever encountered. Emerson Lake and Palmer level wank.
>>
Is it published anywhere as a classic outside of its genre? If not, no.
>>
No.
Read Alasdair Gray if you want to see how to meld creative typography and experimental fiction together, in a way that's actually good and readable.

Are you guys (Americans) taught about the definiton of concepts such as: character development, plothole, plot device, etc. in school? I ask because most english-speaking people I have talked to are aware of them while nobody in my country (even people who read) seem to know their meaning. Sorry for my bad English.
