What does humor mean to you? What value can you derive from it?
>>9990456
divine principle, joy at the destruction of incongruences
is typically subverted into to soldering over those ruptures in the world in order to make oneself feel more comfortable again, bad faith humor that sees the rupture so that it can more comfortably assert it in the comfort that one's world is complete and whole – and beyond this it turns into cliché, where the humorous content is repeated while the rupture that gave it its power is no longer even present; the humorous isn't tied to a subject matter but to its destructive effect. humor self-effaces and tries to make everything humorless. the world and its rulers are inherently humorless and hate comedy – comedy is always destructive
when this latter impulse is embraced true comedy threatens the destruction of everything in hideous laughter, always a spasmodic, pre-metaphysical response
I read Dan Simmons "Hyperion" and quite liked it. It had nice mysterious aura from many unexplained mysteries.
Then I read "The fall of the Hyperion" next book in the series. It thoroughly explained most of the characters and situations from the first book in a manner that was much more boring than just letting them be.
So not only did I found the next book mediocre at best it also ruined the previous book I had found good.
Have any of you had the experience with a sequel that was so bad it ruined the previous book(s)?
I'd like to be warned.
My most recent purchase, made tonight. Seems good so far but I've liked him since Congo.
Currently reading through this. Might be my favorite McCarthy novel yet. Gene is hilarious and reminds me a lot of Blevins from pretty horses. How did you like this novel /lit/? What did you take from it? The themes of loneliness and alienation are resounding
