My dearly grandfather has passed away this monday. I'm heartbroken, so are there some stories about characters who has suffered a loss? Also, I'm interested to stories about the dealing with the grieve.
The Body Artist by Don Delillo

Proust's novel (specifically, vols. III and IV) has the best treatment of the death of a relative and the associated grief that I have ever read.

Those are Savannah Brown's "blowjob eyes", newfriend. Hence the Bataille.
Any pop sci recommendations? Couldn't find such thing on the wiki.
The Selfish Gene
i never liked carl sagan that much, but The Demon-Haunted World was ok.
Quantum - Manjit Kumar
"
" With vigor and elegance, Kumar describes the clash of titans that took place in the world of physics in the early 20th century, between physicists who did and those who did not believe in the quantum—the strange concept that we now know to be the underpinning of reality. The titans in Kumar's account of the conflict are Albert Einstein and Niels Bohr. "
So went a bought the Hackett eddition of Plato's Complete Works recommended by meme /lit/ charts and I have to say, I'm a bit disappointed. The dust-jack is of fairly poor quality, and doesn't fit very well. The paper insides feels quite cheap. The binding itself seems alright but overall it just feels cheaply made.
Anyone else have experience with the Hackett edition? I feel as If i should've just bought the Jowett edition instead.

The classic is Confessions of a Mask first and then Sun and Steel. Also reading Plutarch on the Spartan leaders is inspiring, and Les Miserables
is there anything like a survey of all metaphysical theories? i'm talking stuff like mereology, theories about infinitely divisible constituent parts of matter, protons, neutrons and electrons existing outside of an atom, their constituent parts existing outside of them, etc. anyone got something good? not looking for someone who has a bone to pick in dismissing them, or who is wishfully thinking, just descriptions of historically cool ones/possibilities.
>>9812325
Just go read Descartes. Sounds like you got confused about what meta physics means man. Just means above physics
Probably bait but whatever
>>9812340
Also just a note, it was kept above the physics section in the library of Alexandria so you know

What's wrong with going WHAM! on human experiments now then set the e t h i c s later once we've master the secrets of genetics?
I'm talking in the context of CRISPR and genetic modification specifically embryo editing.

Uhm that'd be inhuman and literally what Hitler did. Not to mention it'd set a terrible precedent for the formulation of law and human rights.

Read pic related, its by one of the discovers' of Cas-9's ability to cut.
Basically she breaks it down like this.
Ethically good:
Modifying crops for sustainability
Attacking Cancer cells
removing damaged genes in live individuals to cure disease
Ethically bad:
Bringing back dinosaurs and mammoths by editing chickens and elephants (and the like)
Editing the human germline and changing evolution
Killing all mosquitos by removing their ability to reproduce (phages)
Changing the human genome for aesthetic or social purposes inv vitro

Thats basically what we're already doing

I'm going on a long trip. What are some of the best audiobooks?
I realise that reading normally is the best way, but I wonder if there are any books where listening to them makes them better.
>>9812108
Unironically the first three books of the horus heresy
>>9812119
You can't say unironically when you say something ironic.
>>9812126
Eh I was pretty surprised man. Thought it would be mainly space chad smashing Stacy for the emperor or whatever but its actually quite rich and good fantasy
And nah the audiobooks are like an action movie at times. Quite good

Where do you think this cat is now?Whenever I see this picture I think of rage comics, and YouTube's 5 star rating system. 2007 was a simpler time.
such a person can write well about disappointment, loneliness, etc. normies cannot write about these topics. the problem is, the people who can write about these topics aren't in a social position that will allow them to be published.
I know this has been asked tons of times, but I want to know whether it's worth or not. I've been reading on a Lenovo tablet with play books for a month now, then a friend suggested that I get an e-reader for eyestrain and such. Is it really so much better than the tablets?
https://youtu.be/d3KUmqoxEs0?t=2m14s here the paperwhite just looks like a normal tablet.
Is the conversion from epub to mobi smooth (no format problems as in when converting from pdf to epub) as I will be downloading my books as epubs most if not all of the time.
Why not insert your penis into your anus and fill it up with urine like a water balloon
i recommend going blind and switching to braille. if you're having trouble going bind i've found it pretty easy to use an icepick
Hey Anon, I have experience reading on both a Lenovo yoga tablet/laptop and a Kindle. If you're reading PDFs, your tablet will be much better suited to reading them. Reading PDFs on a Kindle is a pain in the ass. On the other hand, the e-ink screen of a Kindle does feel more similar to reading a book printed on paper. Supposedly, converting from epub can cause some formatting issues, but I usually have luck finding what I want in the .mobi format already. From personal experience, I never felt eye strain reading on my yoga, and I'd spend long stretches of time reading dense literary theory on it, but at the same time, I'd never want to read a novel for fun on it. Reading novels on a Kindle is much more relaxing, but in theory it might be easier for you to zone out and remember less details than if it were a real book because the pages don't occupy physical space.
I need a short story 1000 words max to hand in tomorrow, I haven't had the time to write on cause life's fucked at the moment. Thanks in Advance

Go on ETCSL for Sumerian literature, read the Gilgamesh stories, and come up with some ancient myth for a short story

What effect will transhumanism have on religion? Will people still be religious if technology enables immortality?
>>9811819
Any proof of transhumanisim? How would it make us immortal?
And to answer your question many people find comfort in God in this life not just the next
>>9811819
your belief that technology is going to make you immortal is already religious
>>9811890
I never claimed such a thing. I did say "if" and not "when", after all. As for whether biological immortality is even possible, I don't know. It's interesting to think about though.
>>9811879
>Any proof of transhumanisim? How would it make us immortal?
I don't know where to start with this. I'd say there's quite a lot of proof of humans being able to modify their environment and their bodies through scientific means. Biological immortality and other such transhumanist ideas are just a natural extension of this.
