Looking for inspiration and ideas on writing a modern epic poem. Same epic theme as Gilgamesh or the Odyssey but more relatable. Any help appreciated!

Do you read lyric poetry? If not, read lyric poetry, and epic cannot be written without the lyric.

What's the most patrician literary reward? Obviously not the Nobel Prize. What's /lit/'s opinion on this?

Is anybody here familiar with Hubbard's work as a writer?
As someone with an interest in both cults and shitty pulp sci-fi, I find myself fascinated by this crazy motherfucker.
Are any of his works actually good, or at least enjoyably bad?
>>9814205
I've only read the later stuff, Battlefield Earth and part of Mission Earth series. I believe these were all ghost written and released under his name as an income stream for Scientology.
They weren't bad. I lost interest in Battlefield Earth towards the end, but the beginning was quite memorable.
posting the rest of that fabulous picture just to bask in its glory.
l ron hubbard had some fucking style.

You don't even need to read the bible. Going to a WASP church as a kid would have been enough.
Is Titus Andronicus really a "bad" play? Or is it just lesser Shakespeare? In fact, is it even 'lesser Shakespeare - is it, rather, 'upper Shakespeare'?
>>9813929
It's metal as fuck.
It is lesser Shakespeare. Just compare it to Hamlet, a play in the same genre yet infinitely superior. I personally enjoy it a lot but its objective value is clear.
Being probably his first play it is "lesser". He starts to feel out themes he would refine in later plays (for example revenge in Lear and Othello).
It's more distinctly verse than his later plays, using lots of end stop and rhyme.
The characters and situations are not as fleshed out and realistic as they will be in the later plays. For example, the rape of lavinia. She has her tongue and hands cut off and when her uncle finds her he breaks into a long poetic monologue instead of helping her!
Also, Shakespeare's language and imagery evolved over time.
Compare Marcus's monologue after finding lavinia (II.iv) to The speech of aufidius in coriolanus (IV.vii), Shakespeare's last play.
Is there a novel that profoundly reveals the fact that social image, politial preferences etc depens on biologically determined conditions?

What does academia have to gain by destroying literature?
>>9813422
Jealousy, academics are all failed writers and are horribly bitter
>>9813422
They destroy it so that greater literature will rise from its ashes like a phoenix. It would grow stale if they didn't destroy it. We should be thanking them.

Or not.
i had LSD two days ago. Would i feel anything if i will take it now? I want to read aristotle, ecclesiastes and celine, and also write something
>>9813290
Micro dose
>>9813290
Tolerance would be still high.
Don't waste time writing and reading on LSD: it is useless, and the connections you make are too vague for you to remember them in the long run (or to translate them if you write them down immediatly).
It would be better to create experiences on LSD (which would imply you leaving your house somehow), and then write about them days if not weeks later.
Example: it is really easy to believe on LSD that you'll 100% die in a few minutes from now. That feeling, and the idea of death that arises, are very close to the actual experience of being close to death, which means that from now on you'll have a way to describe it when writing.
>>9813290
You would feel it even if you took it the day after.
But yes, you will.
Post writing here and get feedback from other /lit/erates.
If anyone would care to read what I deem my best short story so far, I would appreciate any thoughts or comments.
For convenience reasons, and because it is slightly too long to fit in a single post here, I got a link:

I have posted this in the last thread as well and excuse my sorry ass for double posting, but I only got one comment and that hasn't satisfied my self-concious mind.

I really tried and got to the part where you describe the protagonist as stomping like the hulk and call an attractive woman a "thing", and then I skimmed and eventually l stopped doing that. There's a chance I'm way off the mark about this being bad writing and I'm just hopelessly missing the point, like there's some joke I'm not entirely in on, but nonetheless I wasn't interested enough in what you were writing to figure that out. I thought your prose and dialog was trite and in your face and I was turned off almost immediately. I hope this is taken as constructive, because you're obviously, just considering technique, a totally fine writer, I just found this piece uninteresting/bad/cynical to the point of cringing.
