Do I need to read Molloy and Malone dies before reading The Unnamable?
Please respond
No.
Of course you don't *have* to, that's silly.
But why would you only read The Unnamable? It's worth reading all three consecutively.
>>9815080
You don't, but I don't see why you would want to skip them.

I read this recently. It was really good and left me wanting to dive into the rabbit hole. The author says explicitly however that the "greater mysteries" (as opposed to the "lesser" sort described in the text) are closely guarded, only being taught to worthy students verbally. Essentially the argument being that those unprepared to fully appreciate the information will use it for corrupt purposes. Is there merit to this?
To me, both not being a Christian or a scholar, a lot of what esoteric texts, occultism, etc. put forth feels like speculative role-playing by the more learned person unable to reconcile their wishful spirituality with a knowledge of the void, so to speak. There's an implication that underneath the exoteric myths and allegories, lies something really, really dark. That may be my own projection though.
It's gotten me to shed some superficial criticisms of Christianity that I've carried, but I still struggle to understand many things. Like, for example, the seriousness and certainty with which awareness after death and resurrection are dealt. Anyone here deep into this stuff? What's your take on it? Text recommendations?

>Essentially the argument being that those unprepared to fully appreciate the information will use it for corrupt purposes. Is there merit to this?
Its absolutely true. For example, do you hand a child power tools when first teaching him simple woodworking? Here the hidden powers of the mind are even more dangerous.
The world has enough theologians and philosophers. In the grand scheme of things, they are truly impotent because they are of the world, not beyond it. The true movers and creators are the saints and sages, who for the most part remain hidden.
The difference between these two types of men is self-mastery, or more precisely, control of the senses. Without first mastering the senses through good works and renunciation of the world, attainment of higher powers would destroy the man similar to one who doesn't know how to cook with fire and burns their house down.
>>9814949
Naw esoteric knowledge is a con-game, anyone saying "Ooh I've got the spooky secret wisdom of the ages!" is full of it. But by all means explore it and find that out for yourself.
>>9815077
Christ said the path is as narrow as the edge of a razor, and most will fall from it. Also theres they saying, "many are called but few are chosen."
The necessary requirements for attaining higher knowledge is demanding. Most find it easier to simply say that such a path does not exist rather than to devote themselves to treading it.
After all, it is without question the task of all tasks, as it demands exceptional discipline and persistence to conquer the self, (which makes conquering the world seem like a cakewalk in comparison.)
Of course there are countless deceivers and fakes out there trying to exploit and prey upon the well-intentioned, but thats the nature of the world. In order to overcome it, one must overcome all of those things. Those pitfalls and temptations are all part of the path... its not called the "Great Work" for nothing.
Well?
keep the manga, the rest is trash.

You actually must be 18 to post here. If that's not you in the pic, then you should (quickly) lose interest in that person.

In 1997 America's best writers published their respective masterpieces. Why did they all release in the same year?

What's your take on listening to instrumental music while reading?
>>9814859
It's just noise, you might perceive it consciously for a few moments, but beyond that you're fully concentrated on the book. If that is not the case it is distracting and thus detrimental to reading actual literature.
You know what I find best? Reading outside, but away from other people, in nature. It is a quite positive environment, so you can actually pause and contemplate what you are reading without being put down by the cold walls of a room. Also there are no computers nearby if you have adhd, just like I assume a typical /lit/ pleb has.
I play instrumental music while reading, fucking fag ass pleb.
>>9814859
I've found it's impossible to listen to good music and read good literature at the same time. Remember- "listening" is not the same as "hearing."
Good music requires almost your full attention to appreciate properly, just as good writing does. You can't do both at the same time.
Ok /lit/ I need help growing up my dad was always at work and my mom was dead at my birth. So I didn't read children books. Now at the age of 27 I have a son and a daughter. I want to read to them but I don't know what the fuck to read to them. I read the hobbit to them and they seem to like it.
I need kids books preferably nothing with gender bullshit or political bias. It's a long shot I just wanted to ask. Pic not related.
>preferably nothing with gender bullshit or political bias
i mean no media exists in a void but ok
anyway, how old are your kids?
a series of unfortunate events are always solid books for kiddies
>>9814796
read 'em Robinson Crusoe and Treasure Island, some Jack London, the Westing Game, Chronicles of Narnia. I'm partial to Cooper's The Dark is Rising books, personally.
>>9814796
Out of curiosity...
How do you feel about your mom? Do you not care because you've never met her or are you pissed off that you never got the chance? Are you sad? Has it changed with age? Again-- just curious.
Genius or Madman?
somehow im supposed to believe that Christianity, an ideology that is characterised by violence and atrocities , like many other abrahamic religions, is supposed to be meek and mild and inhibiting progress???
protestant ethic -weber
>>9814672
> Christianity, an ideology that is characterised by violence and atrocities
Was Weber a retard or just misinformed?
genius of the first rank.
Never been much of a believer but I do appreciate the way Christianity spread its values throughout Europe and with the way western civilization is collapsing at the moment. it's clear that it was pivotal in keeping us in line. I kinda want to believe in god but...I'm having a few mental blocks. Like here's a few reasons why I don't believe
For starters, Empirical evidence basically goes against every claim made by Abrahamic religions. It seems to me that all religion has done for the last few centuries is try make the Bible say what Modern science says.
"That claim is wrong? Well , that's because it's clearly a metaphor, it just wasn't clear until science proved us wrong"
From my point of view, It's just seems so silly to believe that a god that would communicate his message the same way a normal human would. Through fragile and vulnerable sheets of paper stacked together that have to be transported and often time poorly translated in many languages.
Do the pious never think about these things? Why has god ever sent a few Bibles in America or Africa. If this life is used as a way of judging us than why don't we all start on the same footing? Millions of people died without ever knowing his name or his message. I understand that god doesn't want to intervene because free will and all that but that only accounts for humans being scummy to each other. Why do natural disasters constantly fuck with people's livelihood ( Mostly the more religious countries and regions I might add) and how is that necessary?
Nothing makes sense to me. Hell, sometimes I feel like I could run this shit better than god. Why is it that a Bible can burn like any other book? Why can it be tempered with and mistranslated? Shouldn't the Bible be omnipresent and impossible to misunderstand. Shouldn't it be written in words that no human can write yet so that all may understand?
Like, Imagine if all Bibles were indestructible. That would be the fucking checkmate atheists right? How would anybody be able to argue against god's existence if the Bible was made out of something entirely unique that broke the laws that bind the rest of the material world. It would set itself a part from other religious texts and be impossible to argue against.

The answer to your questions, sorry to say, is "Start with the greeks"
God is the self's awareness of itself. Nothing more or less. The bible is important for understanding the history of the western world, but not as a guide to behavior. It was great for keeping the gullible in line but so is an alcoholic father threatening to beat you with a belt. That doesn't mean that father has anything to teach you about how to think and behave. Society is falling apart not because we've lost track of the correct way to be, but because there's too many of us with too inflated a sense of our domain and what kind of lifestyle we're entitled to.
>>9814677
So you don't have an answer for me is what you're saying?
I'm looking for good conspiracy novels, particularly if they deal with aliens and government cover-ups.
Something kind of like the original Deus Ex with a little bit of the X-Files thrown in.
Do you have any ideas?
Thanks!

Was this basically the epic poem version of a stadium band yelling out the hometown that they're playing in during a concert? Did Homer's audience wait for him to call out their ancestral homeland and cheer?
Can anyone tell me where Stirner fell politically? He seems to defy all logic in this area and his ideals seem vague at best, but I like the concepts of morality that he puts forward.
Egoist anarchism
Wherever he felt suited him at the time while reserving the ability to change his stance whenever he felt it suited him better.
