What's so good about it?
Literally 10th grade tier
The guy's pretentious, but he has a right to be. The reason it's so short is because he pours his qualitiy toughts into it, excluding all the unnecessary. Not story oriented, leaving only his version of eastern philosophy and values. In ways similar to The Stranger, only with heavier writing (not so fluent, it required a higher dose of concentration to read than Camus).

Isn't Steppenwolf his best anyway?
What are your favourite literary film adaptations, /lit/?
I'll start.
Oh excellent choice OP.
Tarkovsky's Stalker is up there too.
>>7358993
Is it? I watched Tarkovsky's "Mirror" and liked it. I'm down for more by him, ty anon
What book do I read to cure being spiritually and emotionally dead?
The Holy Bible.
Augustine's Confessions
Cicero's complete philosophical works

Its called "quit antidepressants"
I want read China Miéville's stuff, what are some of his best books?
Looking For Jake has a nice selection of different ideas and styles. His longer works can be a bit atonal. I liked The City & The City; Kraken was entertaining at times but a bit long and just yet more Gaimanesque urban fantasy, King Rat was stupid for a number of reasons, Embassytown and Railsea are stylistically flawed, the scar trilogy or whatever it's good is a bit like a pseudo-serious Discworld.
I liked Embassytown, The City & The City, and Perdido Street Station. The Kraken was way to Gaimanesque for my taste.
c-can someone s-site read this p-p-please?

What the fuck is semiotics and why is it important?
Like, I kind of get it, I think. You see a man in a suit and you think "businessman". So, the man in the suit is the signifier and "businessman" is the signified, and together they form a symbol... so what? Help me to understand, I'm fucking retarded.
>>7358755
m8 you got it the wrong way round
Signifier = word
Signified = concept
referent = actual thing
That's really all I remember from some critical theory books on strucuralism and post-structuralism soz
>>7358775
Is there some sort of Semiotics 101 book I can pick up somewhere? It sounds interesting but I just can't seem to see how there can be a whole branch of philosophy attached to symbols.
>>7358788
Ya I get the feeling from semiotics that someone realized symbols had a semi regular anatomy, began naming all the bits they could differentiate, and then quit without doing anything interesting
Post the last book that you was '''''''''''''''''''''''''fun''''''''''''''''''''''''''''
TSZ for me. I'll be fucked if I understood it all, but it is well written, entertaining and humorous. Pretty decadent ay?

Pic related.I hate myself and existence makes me sick.
Why do you prefer 3rd Person to 1st Person, /lit/?
>>7358632
I write in second person :^)
>>7358632
Because, as you can see, the first person is a non-white woman, the worst kind of woman.
The second woman is too pretty for her own good and has already sold her innocence for the cutest football player already.
The third person, she has obviously lived a hard life of isolation, like me. I would love her and she would love me.
>>7358632
I believed third person was the standard and that's how I was taught at school. Many times I attempted writing and it always turned out shit. I hated it. I stopped.
Lately I began reading existentialist fiction (Camus, Sartre, Dostoevsky etc.) and they all utilised first person. After seeing the depth of expression it affords, I attempted writing again for the first time in years. It has changed everything for me. The quality of my work has improved 1000x and it doesn't feel clunky and awkward at all any more.
Can anyone redpill me on these two classics, /lit/ ?
How strong are they?
Who is more powerful?
Who would win in a battle?Which literary universe is better?Which author is better?
Let the games begin.
I would bet on Cthulhu because he's a deathless interdimensional ... thing, whereas the other one is just a really big dragon.
Tolkein is more popular in general whereas Lovecraft is perhaps more subtly influential through other writers who are fans of his. Lovecraft seemed to have more original ideas but Tolkein is the greater researcher and put in significantly more actual work into his world building. I guess weighing those up, Tolkein comes out on top although I find him terribly dreary myself.
Stupid thing to argue about really. They have their own strengths and weaknesses, they're very different.
Nobody gives a flying fuck.

>using 'redpill' as a verb

I don't know for at least three reasons:
i] Not being an American, I don't know what ages 6th-12th grades are.
ii] I read a tonne of books, there's no possible way I could list all the ones from any given year.
iii] I left school about ten years ago.

Favorite Bible Verse thread? Been thinking a lot about Isaiah 45:9 after happening upon it recently. The translations of the final verse are all over the place which adds to the interest.

2 Kings 2:23-24
23 From there Elisha went up to Bethel. As he was walking along the road, some boys came out of the town and jeered at him. “Get out of here, baldy!” they said. “Get out of here, baldy!” 24 He turned around, looked at them and called down a curse on them in the name of the Lord. Then two bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the boys.

Matthew 7:6
Isaiah 45:7
I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things.

What can you guys tell me about Marquez's "One Hundred Years of Solitude"? I want significant symbols of Marquez's leanings towards Communism. Is this a feasible, or shall I say fruitful, task worth doing with this novel?
