How do I stop my writing from turning into a script? I love writing dialogue and while I'm pretty confident in the quality of my dialogue, I alwyas end up with pages looking like:

The man turned to the woman and said, "Dialogue."
"More dialogue" she replied.
"Dialogue."
"More dialogue."
"Dialogue."
"More dialogue."
"Dialogue."
"More dialogue."
"Dialogue."
"More dialogue."
"Dialogue."
"More dialogue."

Any tips on how to stop using extensive dialogue as a crutch?

this is a good question

mine always becomes awkward with describing the character's actions or details during the conversation

i think honestly if you have that much dialogue to write you should maybe just let it go as it is

Dialogue is essentially exposition, you're telling the reader what you want him to know by having him listen in on characters talking. If possible, try to show rather than tell the reader the same information. If you're using a lot of dialogue to tell the reader that a character is wishy-washy and unable to make a decision, try instead to cut the dialogue down to a minimum and reinforce it with an action - our indecisive protagonist talking while trying to pick between two nearly identical apples, for example.

I guess it's really more about plays rather than strictly literature, but I think Shakespeare is sufficiently literary to be suited to this board.
Anyway, the question is, do you think Shakespeare's plays ought to be performed translated into modern English? Why or why not?
My own take is that they should, because his language archaic enough to be rather difficult for a modern reader to understand without the aid of a dictionary. I also say that if Chekhov in English is still Chekhov that Shakespeare in Modern English can still be Shakespeare.

When possible it is always best to read authors in their original language. Hence why modern-English Shakespeare will always be pleb-tier.

Do you think we ought to perform Aristophanes' plays in the original Greek?

Im about to subscribe to The Library of America. Does anybody else do this? Am I making a mistake?

Do any other publishers have good subscription services?

Is there anything special about Library of America books? Or are they just another one of those "neat hardcover" publishers?
>>

A mistake making a mistake. Yowch. But will it undo your parents's crime?
>>

Check it out m8. These aren't the signature black books that a synonymies Library of America. They are really nice hardcovers tho and you get a 3 book set for like $10 to start then get a book a month for like $25 bucks

How relevant is this book for today's society? I've heard that the penalization for owning lolicon content was a prime example of thoughtcrime.

It remains relevant in many ways, though Brave New World has turned out to be a more accurate depiction of the future.

For the /lit/ anons that actually do/enjoy science, is there any fundamental difference between pop science shows(like Brain Games and the like) and actually reading the books/papers and investigations?

I mean, sure, if you read you'll be able to discuss it more thoroughly i guess, but with pop science you get the basics of everything to understand something without having to delve deep into searching and shit.

You answered your own question, pop science is made to make the subject closer to a layman understanding, but if you want the real shit you have to read the papers.
>>
>>7377121
Maybe i worded it wrong.

I mean, is there anything bad in just relying in pop science if you don't want to skim through thousands of pages of papers to look for the results only?
>>
>>7377138
if you want a decent understanding of scientific topics then just read textbooks for undergrads. only once you get the general knowledge of the topic and importantly vocabulary can you begin to understand scientific papers

How important it is to read the bible before getting into philosophy?
33 posts and 5 images submitted.
>>
>>7376883

Completely pointless unless you've mastered symbolic logic
>>
>>7376883
It's not really that important if your philosophical readings start with the Greeks. That's a different matter by the time you get to Augustine and the other medievals though. You could start with either, or you conclude your Greek and early Roman studies with the Bible.
>>
>>7376883
OP here, this is my plan:
>read a book of general human history (very resumed ofc)
>read the holy bible
>get into philosophy and the history of the philosophical school i am reading more deeply

r8? tips?
