What are some good (and serious) books about multiculturalism?
I want to learn about its concept, implications, roots, pros and cons, etc. from a serious perspective.
I feel that the topic is now hotter than ever, and I'm tired of all those deliberately misguiding opinions from people who don't know shit about politics, law, economics or philosophy.
Please, don't send me to /pol/. I don't want a "it was deh joos" thread. If I wanted a racism vs SJW, I wouldn't have posted here.
The Perils of Diversity - Byron Roth

Multiculturalism is a buzzword and generally good works don't get based around buzzwords.
You know, doesn't EVERY story technically begin in medias res?
not in any way that preserves the term having any meaning at all, no.

What are examples of lowbrow literature and is it bad if you read them?
>>7390109
>What are examples of lowbrow literature
Most books.
>is it bad if you read them
Yes.
>What are examples of lowbrow literature
Fiction you can buy at the airport
>and is it bad if you read them?
They can be a handy cultural document but that's about it

melodramatic and totaly unrealistic dialogue
cardboard cut out characters without any subtlety (hallmark is the lack virtually any defects, sexual desires along with many super positive and borderline unrealistic character traits, aka katniss from the hunger games)
plot basically is the novel, the novel is basically a screenplay with babby's first imagery peppered in there (dan brown books)
self-insert characters which are always at the center of attention and never did nuffin wrong (harry potter)
plots in which the whole world is at stake in some form due to the actions of the protagonist. 1984 barely edges along this line before it's revealed nothing was at stake all along and winston was no more than an insect. one of the greatest sucker punches in all of literature imo, especially when you read it as an immature teen and are expecting some sort of great rebellion with winston and julia at the center.
in my opinion it is not bad if you read them. it may be bad if you indulge in them because it means you have not acquired more sophisticated tastes and are still immature. you can learn something from every piece of writing though.
Any advice for someone whos attempting thier first novel?

Write about gorillas or catuses.
juz do it
>>7390050
It will be shit. Accept this fact now to save the disappointment later.
>brother is mega pleb WWII history buff (still in high school)
>only reads books about the Holocaust, Nazis, various atrocities, and Hitchens
>thinks fiction is useless and mocks my enjoyment of it
>sees 'American Psycho' for the meme value one day
>decides to read the book
Should I dissuade him, /lit/? Will it be too pomo for a non-reader to understand? I'm kind of worried that he'll hate it and get turned off fiction forever.
>>7390011
If he's a "military history buff" it can't get much worse. That's the go-to hobby for manchildren trying to look smart.
>>7390026
This tbqh. Military history is the plebbest form of history and the most autistic. Just take a look at /his/ and see how many military history manchild retards are shitting up that board.

Thoughts on Mad Magazine?
The early days of Mad had some brilliant stuff but it's extremely spotty afterwards. EC published some amazing stuff back then as far as comics go.

What does think of audio books? I use my phone's WiFi to listen lectures , talks and interviews but feel like audio books must cheapen their source.
How much worse if at all is it to use audiobooks instead of text
Audiobooks are for kids. It's the adult version of listening to bedtime stories.
>>7389937
>How much worse if at all is it to use audiobooks instead of text
Pretty fucking huge difference. It's the difference between actively engaging in a text and passively listening to a voice. Audiobooks are for lazy soccermoms who only want something to listen to while commuting to work.
>>7389975
The only time I used an audiobook it was after each book of paridise lost. I would read the book then later listen to it to hear the poetry of the words and reinforce my first reading.
Other than that I think they are stupid, might as well watch tv.
>mention Philip K. Dick
>someone says, "LOL, 'Dick.'"

-Do you want some dick, Phillip?
-K, dick.
>mention Lovecraft
>lol, love-craft

Its because you pronounced it wrong OP. Its pronounced deek as in the Dutch
Hey, /lit/, what are your thoughts on this? I'm interested in the opinions of those residing both in and out of the States.
>The Fault in Our Stars is half the country
Kill me senpai. Interesting that the 'deep south' states like Alabama and Georgia are reading some of the most patrician works.
I went to high-school in MA and though we read 'Night' it certainly wasn't senior year
>>7389765
That's what I was thinking as well. Northern states like to bash the intelligence of the southern states but I haven't seen anyone here in the north reading Shakespeare outside of my own family

Consider the following:
Most high schoolers are required to read Macbeth as part of public school curriculum. If your only reading is done in school, and you never read another thing after that, then the book that you've all been required to read is going to be overrepresented due to lack of other options.
I bought this recently. Have you read it lit? is it any good? Opinions please.
It's ebin desu, I read it in one sitting.
Worth a read at least, I read it to prepare myself before going to Prague
>>7389734
It is any good.
What are his best books?
I have yet to read Hegel (only on Aristotle on my journey so far), so I would like both his funny meme books and ones that are more related to the discussion of modern events.
Stick to Hegel.
>>7389737
b-but funny meme books :(
>>7389741
Look, no one is going to stop you from reading them, but if what you're looking for is knowledge, or at least a better comprehension of Zizek's and Hegelian philosophy you have to start from the bottom.
Aristotle is good too.
Who is the most pessemisitic or depressing philosopher/poet/novelist you can think of?
>>7389668
Schopenhauer
>>7389668
T.S. Eliot, Lovecraft.
>“They didn’t have to do that”
Is there anything in a creative work that “has” to be done? The favorite thing that analysts love to point out is that “Oh, the blue curtains have to mean something, the author didn’t have to make them blue, but they choose to. They choose to make the curtains blue over something else”
Is it not possible that the artist wrote "He stood upon the stepladder" not because it represented the character rising in moral standing but simply because the character needed to reach something on the top shelf?
>>7389632
I always thought the curtains being blue was a garbage example to be used for this whole thing. The author could have made the curtains blue to set a mood, and I never see this brought up by either authorfags or deaththereoffags.
>>7389643
It's the only example /lit/ has, so they continually rehash it.
You think us capable of creating new arguments?
>>7389839
learn a real rigorous discipline, faggot
So /lit/, do you have the feel that some books you just can't read in public? I've always felt that way with few books, for example the bible or the divine comedy, and was wondering if it was only me.
>just bought pic related, it is in brazil-portuguese.
I read the God Delusion at my Christian grandfather's funeral. Keks were had.

your edges shine through horizont
A guy in one of my graduate literature classes started the semester carrying around Ulysses, and ended up carrying in Infinite Jest on one of the last days.
As long as you aren't that guy you can read most things in public.
Is it better to persevere with writing something you have begun writing but lost interest in
or
begin something new that you are interested in?
Always finish what you start.
>>7390495
no -- sometimes what i started was absolute trash
You probably lost interest in it because it sucked. I don't see much point in finishing a piece of shit, but do whatever you want, homo.
