Pic oh so related, the worst fan fic I read so far.
>>7415586
Excellent bait, friend.
>>7415586
If Vergil is fan fic, then so is literally the entirety of the western canon.
Bait 3/10

This overrated garbage. Just a bunch of pretentious nonsense that nobody would care about if it wasn't for the fancy Old English writing
∫ 1/cabin d(cabin) = log cabin + c = houseboat
If you don't immediately get this joke then you should stop reading Pynchon, because he is too hard for you and you're just reading him to acquire cultural capital.
It's not that complex of a joke
Anyway math humor is for autists

>It's not that complex of a joke
Which is why you should immediately get it, like I stated. Did you read the OP? Clearly not, or at least you didn't understand it. Please read it again and then immediately delete your post, thank you

Has anyone read Church Not Made With Hands by DFW? It's from BIWHM, and it's perhaps the most compelling story in the collection, imo, which can be found via torrent if you're so inclined to join this dicussion and haven't read it (it's very short).
It seems to be about redemption and faith wrapped up in a dense, poetic language and there's a lot of elements of linguistic deconstruction taking place, I'm wondering what critical lens would be best to view this with- something along the lines of Derrida or Heideggar?
just read it senpai
>still have trouble reading the interviews themselves
what's the point
Who is objectively the best fiction writer of all time, /lit/? And why is it this man?
>>7415447
I too, like dicks.
literally the only sci-fi writer worth reading, that's including Le Guin who was actually his 'dead' twin and also a parallel manifestation of the same consciousness.
>>7415510
That's not true though. Try reading before you post on /lit/, there's a good boy.
Why is this writing style allowed? It makes me want to fucking punch someone, I wish the narrator would shut the fucking hell up and let the characters tell the storyFUCK
Fuck off with your genre-trash and reading for plot.

This is the worst shit I have ever read.
This is the worst shit I have ever read.
Much like Hemingway and Alan Moore, Whitman himself is great but everyone who came after him and tried to imitate him is fucking awful.
This is the worst shit I have ever read
Are pen pals still a thing?
I'd love to have one, I think it'd be fun.
Any of you guys have one now, or did in the past?
>>7415114
I fell in love with mine and decided never to do it again.
If you do, do it with men.
>>7415154
How very romcom
>inb4 Vonnegut haters
Alice in Wonderland.jpg
What did you like about it? I read it recently and thought it was kind of dry and disjointed.
Catcher in the Rye desu senpai faggot kek
Do you feel that you are a more mindful reader now than a couple years back? Especially those of you who are already a few years into adulthood.
I do wonder how much of it would be, well, bias.
I definitely have learned how to read better. in my late teens and early 20s I tended to consume everything within a novel without discrimination, didn't have a filter for what was important vs what was not important to understanding the text.

Who be that erection confection yonder?
Borges learned German by reading Heine's Buch der Lieder, do you think this is a good tactic to emulate?
Not really. At least also complete a basic grammar textbook and find some way to train your spoken comprehension. Reading is a good source of vocabulary though (add the new words to an Anki deck).
Leider, nein.
>>7415063
No. Enroll in a Sprachkurs with an absolute minimum of 2 hours a day 5 days a week. Then in the evenings work through a grammar book.
How do I into poetry? Is there a point in reading translated verses or should I stick with the languages I know well?
>>7414760
Poetry loses much much more than prose in translation.
There are several books that cover meter, rhyme, poeteic structures, figures of speech, rhetoric, etc. Read one of these to understand the basic building blocks of poetry.
Then read lots of poems. Harold blooms best poems of the English language gives a good range of poets (assuming you want to read in English). If you find someone you particularly like, get some more of their poems.
If you know English then you have access to a wealth of Poetry.
Read a book on poetry and metre and form, such as Rhyme's Reason, or, The Oad Less Travelled.
Then read an Anthology such as Bloom's The Best Poems of The English Language. After that, you should have a great foundation for independent choice.

>Is there a point in reading translated verses
Yes.
>should I stick with the languages I know well?
Yes.
DUDE ALIENS LMAO
>>7414759
what if... like you could travel through time?
>I think that's been done before, Mr. Vonnegut
okay but what if like you didn't get to pick where you went, and knew how you were going to die?
>But couldn't you affect your past and future by using knowledge gained time traveling?
ookay but what if you were like a weirdo and maybe a little bit retarded
>who'd want to read a story about a loser retard who doesn't do anything to change his life
okay, hm. okay what if you were still a retard but also had a big dick?
>>7414944
okay what if you could travel through time
>mr. vonnegut you wrote that a while ago
no no, but you didn't choose where you went
>yes sir that's the plot of Slaughterhouse--
no but, you were everywhere at once all the time
>how would character develop?
i dunno, at the end you could get angry at your space friend despite the fact you've slowly cultivated a friendship though he sees shit in the same way you do
>how would that even work
well i would just explain all the sci fi elements, but then ignore it and write it like a relationship between any two non time traveling characters
>>7414759
Hate him as much as you like, but I'd have smoked weed with Vonnegut.
>tfw found out you can freestyle rap to Mf Doom backing tracks spontaneously for around two minutes, using an irregular rhythm scheme, surrealist imagery and occasionally a rough iambic pentameter
What is the darkest book in existence.

Your mother's diary.

Dankest book is IJ tbqh fami
Catcher in the Rye
Incestuous pedophilic rape? Doesn't get much more edgy than that
I've suddenly got the drive to research philosophy. I have little to no prior knowledge and therefore have no idea what I'm looking for when it comes to authors, or categories. I'm thinking I'd enjoy stuff on existentialism, things like that. I was wondering, could any of you recommend any good authors, books or categories? It'd be much appreciated.
start with the greeks
Bryan Maggee - The Story of Philosophy
>>7414684
Read the Aztecs. If you start with the Greeks you'll feel like you haven't finished unless you read all western philosophy. Aztec philosophy actually has an end.
