If I give my mother specific titles she will buy "similar" so that it will be a surprise, if the book is about ww2 she will get me bill o'reilleys book on hitler. If I get her lists of award winners or something she will buy me books by female authors or classics that ive already read.

Ive told everyone never to buy me books anymore.

wow, I read it when I was 17 and I loved every second of it. It definitely gets better as you go on, but I suppose this book isn't for everyone.

There are plenty of women that read but they are almost always consumers of best sellers and sympathetic low-lit novels. Sometimes they will read something good (my mom shocked me reading death comes for the archbishop) but mostly the top tier is Franzen.

There are very few men I know who read other than news. The nerds i hung out with in hs read forgotten realms and warhammer stuff, and some of the guys in college were into GRRM, and some of the medical residents I know will read something ideological or non-fiction, but no one into award winning contemporary /lit/ or meme books or anything else you see here. Honestly, if you are young and move to NYC you could probably fall into a /lit/ crowd if you hang around st marks or local book stores, or are at an ivy league, but im not that young anymore.

I may be totally wrong, but when I go to local libraries I see lots of older well dressed people, fat older moms who arent well dressed with terrible books, nerdy teen boys reading YA, and teen girls sitting in circles with their phones out talking.

I've had the same issues. Back in high school, I made a friend who liked to read and we had half our classes together so we'd literally made sure we had the same book and read it so we could talk about it the next day. We were girls so we read the Divergent and Hunger Games crap. Eventually I grew out of it and started reading classics, and I found another 2 other friends to talk /lit/ but they both were beyond my level at the time, so I just stuck to forums and reviews to help me talk about /lit/.

Currently half-way through Circe and it might just be my favourite chapter so far. Cyclops was absolutely great as well.

I forced myself through Oxen of the Sun. The last few pages of that chapter were fun though.

Circe is incredibly fun. Bloom being crowned Emperor of Dublin is absolutely hilarious.

I understood absolutely nothing about the last few pages of Oxen of the Sun. With the earlier styles I could maybe get the gist of some of it, but when Joyce starts writing in future English slang I might as well have been reading Greek.

Ithaca. Easily the most emotional chapter of the book. The juxtaposition of that with the cold scientific language just really worked somehow. It was just a relatively easy read while somehow still being quite beautiful. Second favourite would probably be Cyclops, it was just funny.

Definitely Oxen. It was a slog. I didn't mind Proteus as much but I didn't get very much from it. Proteus really annoyed me for a lot of reasons. Steven was building up a whole reading of Aristotle throughout Telemachus and Nestor and then Proteus is just so fucking obfuscatory that it's impossible to get any conclusion to it. Somehow Oxen still manages to be worse.

What did you get from Proteus OP? Perhaps it stands up well to in depth analysis that I didn't give it the time for.

It is a winner's outlook. The piece that got rejected is something I am way past now, 5-6 stories ago for me. I'm going to keep writing, but I'm keeping this letter as proof that I am actually trying to be a writer and not just jerking off onto loose leaf paper.
