so is literature just shitty philosophy with a bunch of pretty language around it to make it seem more profound?

Nah senpai, literature is pretty language with some philosophy around it.
>>

i think about this all the time

like all the great novels are really just dozens, or even potentially millions of encoded messages meant to be translated into the readers internal language

like virginia woolf intentionally wrote her novels in order to convey a message about the way the mind wanders, and the manner in which we place emphasis on certain things and how a single moment can sometimes capture a persons entire life in microcosm.

and so its like, she knew all that shit, and then wrote a code, Mrs. Dalloway, which we are then all meant to decrypt so WE can know it too.

then take Ulysses, renowned because of the breadth and depth of the decryption required, because unlike Mrs. Dalloway where the only real knowledge necessary is our own experiences in social scenarios Ulysses forces us to have a familiarity with Shakespeare, the Greeks etc

Bloom sees his reflection and it has a shitty, patchy beard, and souless eyes. we set about decoding it: ok hes describing shakespeare but twisted. shakespeare - 1. Bloom is seeing himself as a shitty shakespeare. Joyce sees himself as a shitty imitation of Shakespeare.

and its almost like regardless of what Joyce actually meant, he meant SOMETHING and then wrote the passage as its code

Tolstoy is even more obvious, hes saying something about the passage of time and one's resting state in Death of Ivan Ilyich. How someone can become old and decrepit in just a few moments, from youth to the grave in moments but also decades. Ivan doesn't need a full novel, thats intentional, because lives gain momentum and it requires concerted effort to keep the passage of time slow.

but these are philosophical ideas, can they really be the point of art? of novels?

1) It was a poem, not a story.

2) No extant copy is known to exist.

Imagine if instead of The Princess Bride, Columbo had decided to read his grandson something like The Story of O? The Sleeping Beauty trilogy? Fifty Shades of Grey?

Yes, what if?
What if Neitzche had been Polish?
What if David Foster Wallace had worn melons on his face instead of glasses?
These are all examples of questions that do not need to be asked. Not only do they propose investigation into an idea that simply does not matter, but they also are not insightful or humorous in any way. These, friend, constitute what we here on 4chin like to call "shitposts".

For some reason, I love books with giant otherdimensional insectoid monsters slaughtering people.

Right now, The Mist is arguably in my opinion the best insect monster book out there. Do any of you know anything that can one-up it?

Read the Lovectaft essay "The Supernatural Horror in Lit.." a guide

The Mist is heavily influenced by the works of Lovecraft so you should definitely look into his bibliography. I would start with At The Mountains Of Madness.

Hey /lit/,

I'm looking to expand my literary background, and I've decided that the Bible is a pretty important text to read. The problem is that I'm not quite sure which version to get.

I don't really mind whether or not it's annotated, but I think that I'd be better off with one that is. I'm not looking for one that has either a Judeo/Christian viewpoint or an atheistic viewpoint, just one with that tries to point out literary/historical/archeological/cultural significance. Also, I know that a lot of euphoric persons tend to point out that modern Bible translations are heavily edited, and I was wondering if this is true, and whether or not I should take this into account when deciding which version I should get. I prefer to get one that's as true to the original text as possible, but if for some reason this isn't a good idea, I'd like to know.

Thanks,

Anon

Greek interlinear?
>>
>>7574916
Thanks, I didn't initially consider getting an interlinear. That might be a good idea, but I'm looking for a copy with the Old Testament as well, not just the New Testament. Idk if there are any interlinears containing both the Old Testament (Hebrew/Aramaic) and the New Testament (Greek).

I guess I should clarify further, however. I'm looking for one with more notes and references, considering that my historical background it a bit lacking.

>One never knew after all, now did one?

Why did he cut the extra two "now did one's" in the official audiobook (read by himself).

Is it possible this was originally a misprint? Did he change his mind post-publication because it sounded pretentious?

Or was the audiobook recorded first, and extra added later (like in the pale King)

Also; what did he mean by this?

I just learned from my mother that when I was only a year old, I was taken on a hike to Mt. Olympus. Impervious to the esthetic and a general philistine, my parents failed to recognize that I was smiled upon by the residents of that holy summit and now that I have learned of my true heritage and understand my destiny all the better, I come to you for recommendations.

I would like to read works from those superior beings that involve mortals being blessed into greater paths then they could tread without the intervention of the gods. Something along the lines of Ganymede.

Hey /lit/. I just became acquainted with François Bordes, French professor of prehistory. I know he was supposed to be a popular scifi writer in the Soviet Union, but apparently none of his books were translated into English. Have any former-Soviet anons dabbled in translating his work or know of any unofficial translations I could find online?

>The novel was dedicated to Carsac's American friends and science fiction writer colleagues Poul Anderson and L. Sprague de Camp, from whose works the author acknowledged borrowing some elements.

>L. Sprague de Camp called the book "a whale of a story," and with the permission of Carsac's widow undertook to translate it into English for the American market. His agent circulated a three-chapter sample with a synopsis of the remainder of the story to U.S. publishers, but it was rejected on the grounds that Carsac "had no name recognition in the US and, being dead, could not be sold as a 'coming' writer."

What passages, or entire books have been therapeutic for you? Basically, in this thread, I would like you anons to share a passage or two that has been therapeutic for you. Not looking for motivational quotes or anything like that, just some honest, personal reflection.

Today I was reading Anna Karenina and read the part where Levin confesses his sins, so to speak, to Kitty by giving her his notebooks. The confession was that Levin had been with other women, and was a nonbeliever. Kitty was upset most by Levin's impurity, but forgives him while still denouncing his past as terrible.

I realize this isn't the deepest or most thought provoking except available in the book, but it struck a chord with me anyway. So much stuff in this book has spoken directly to my soul, to speak romantically, and has literally been more therapeutic than my antidepressants.

I find uplifting quotes or motivational stuff so puerile and vapid and useless... I figured this could be a better alternative. So, if you can be bothered, share your own.
