Is anyone here familiar with how Yukio Mishima is regarded in Japan? Is he considered an essential author and taught in schools? or is he an author that most don't want to associate themselves with due to his nationalist sentiments and the scandalous elements of his homosexuality?

Sorry if this is a redundant topic but it doesn't seem like the archive is functioning.

Can we get a script thread?
This one I pretty much enjoyed.

I read Kubrick's Napoleon script a while ago. It might have been his best movie if it actually got made..
>>
>>7591047
That movie was absolute overrated garbage.
>>
>>7591047
My favorite movie. But It is very visual and I think there are a lot of improvised scenes (I mean, por of it was filmed a year or so later), so the script must be very different from the final result.

What are some books that will give me a stronger understanding of humor? I've always had an interest in comedy and was voted class clown in my high school but turned it down because of stupid hipster bullshit. I know that taking comedy seriously is the most unfunny thing you can do but I don't care. I legitimately have an interest in it as an art form. I don't plan on making a career out of it or anything though. So what are some essential comedies and nonfiction that analyzes comedy? Pic related. I'm currently reading Don Quixote.

I need clarification. Were you offered a certificate or something? Did your high school do badges or something?

It was a senior superlative type of thing. You got your picture in the yearbook alongside the other people who got most athletic, most school spirit, ect. I didn't want some sort of cheesy pic of me doing something totes wacky in a yearbook. Looking back on it, I'm not sure if it was the right decision but I don't really care that much.

I know you guys are mostly about the serious stuff here, but let's hear about thrillers.

What is the thriller writer you admire the most?

Which thriller novel is your favourite?

not thrillers per se (though they are certainly thrilling) the works of elmore leonard never fail to entertain.
>>
First few novels by Clancy before he turned to shit.
Le Carre
Maybe a few others.

Haven't heard one good thing bout Koontz, Patterson, Grisham, Connely and their ilk
>>
I love a good thriller. I came to the genre through my love of Ian Fleming and James Bond novels. So after Ian died Kingsley Amis wrote one Bond novel and it turned me into a fan of his. In fact I love all the Bond authors, Gardner, Benson, Higson, Faulks, Boyd, Wood, Horowitz and Deaver. Jeffrey Deaver I love outside his single Bond novel, check out Garden Of Beasts.

Also, Ludlum, Clancy, Lecarre, Dale Brown (Act Of War and Edge of Battle are the closest we will ever get to an Iron Man/War Machine/Air force/south american drug lords novel).

Are there any good novels about hacking? Preferably fiction but if it's good I'll take non-fiction as well.

Ender's Game has Andrew Wiggin hack a computer username system, but it's not fundamentally about hacking.

Neuromancer

I would dare say the non-fiction available is superior to the fiction. Some good titles, limited to the topic of hacking itself:
* Steven Levy, Hackers: Heroes of the Computer Revolution [the best general history I think]
* Eric S. Raymond, ed., The Jargon File [hacker dictionary; also a good author to know for open-source topics]
* Katie Hafner and John Markoff, Cyberpunk: Outlaws and Hackers on the Computer Frontier [some interesting examples]
* Bruce Sterling, The Hacker Crackdown: Law and Disorder on the Electronic Frontier [a good author to know for legal issues, security, and so on]
* Clifford Stoll, The Cuckoo's Egg: Tracking a Spy Through the Maze of Computer Espionage [a detailed account of an early and significant security incident]
* Steve Wozniak with Gina Smith, iWoz [Wozniak is a great hacker in the true sense of the word, e.g., the efficiency of his designs for the original Apple computers]

Thoughts on this man?

I just read his Poland and Alaska and was afraid i would slog through them, but they turned out to be great reads. Perhaps not the most accurate factually and ideologically, as he takes liberties and creates characters and events alongside historical ones, but i loved the way he creates context for geographical regions and describes the grandeur that exists in things most people would never bother describing like the view of the mountain ranges and forests from a town now lost to time, or the process required to mine gold in a permafrost.

I've never seen him discussed here for some reason. What do you guys think?

How do I get into poetry? Is there a recommendation chart?

The wiki was not as helpful as I hoped?

I started with the Bloom and Norton anthologies and went from there.

Read an intro book to learn about meter, classic poem forms, rhyme and rhetorical techniques.
Then read a poetry anthology to get a good taste of different movements and poets.
Read more poetry.
