Are there any "essential classics" that you feel no interest in reading? Something you always see on lists or in threads, but feel no desire to ever pick up a copy?
Lord of the Rings
I will never read 1984 or Brave New World. Just a super boring topic to me. Also any Vonnegut/Pynchon.
>>7672410
You might also be bored by Darkness at Noon but it's much more important than Orwell/Huxley and deserves to be their place
>Grandparents over for dinner
>Me and Granddad always talk about the books we're reading; he usually reads historical fiction
>"What are you reading right now, anon?"
>Pynchon, Delillo, etc. No one in my family knows or cares about post-modern fiction
>Grandad says he just finished a small book, "Tai-Pei", since my aunt has been teaching over in China
>wat.jpg
>this is the only time I've ever heard of another person in my life who's read a meme author
>Tell him I've read it and know all about Tao
>He says he isn't sure how to feel about it, he "never thought Asian's were really that callous"
>MFW

Gormenghast. What to expect? Atmospheric? Creepy? Worth reading?
This is pulp for the people put off by the poverty of the language used by Stephanie Meyer.
>>7668225
I don't understand?
nothing BUT atmosphere
the series is good, but it's not in any hurry to go anywhere
Boy in Darkness is great though
>tfw slogging through a shitty book that a cute girl recommended you while trying to come up with convincing lies about why I liked the book
god dammit, i fucked up the pronouns. you know what i mean.
I just had this experience with a /lit/ recommendation. I imagine it was a woman at least, because its quality was offensive.
>>7671957
What book did they recommend?
Just read this and I have some questions
>is this babies first sci Fi?
>should I read the other books?
>were/are you able to separate the authors opinions on homosexuals from his work?
>did you like the book
>>7668131
>is this babies first sci Fi?
yeah it's as good a place to start as any
>>should I read the other books?
they get progressively worse as he slips his weird mormon ideas into the story but if you're into that kind of thing and you didn't like everything that made the original good then go ahead.
>>were/are you able to separate the authors opinions on homosexuals from his work?
yeah
>>did you like the book
it was alright

That jet fuel can't melt dank memes. I've already self-published several books on the topic.
Who is this demon of the semen?
Any books that help you prepare for a life of virginity? I'm short, deformed, can't walk properly and have a 3 inch penis.

Maybe I will, but companionship will never be attained unfortunately.
Holy shit, this book was fucking awesome.
I thought it was just some nice kid's book about dogs, but it actually had great prose and very well developed themes.
This should be added to all the /lit/ starter kits ASAP.
Fuck off with your dog book shit
>>7667914
Confirmed for not even reading the book.
>>7667907
Great fuckin book. The perspective actually felt like an animal's, and somehow I completely identified with it. Primal as fuck/10
What's /lit/'s opinion on books being converted to film? Is this for plebs only, does it sometimes open a new window into the enjoyment of the work, or other?
(For those who say "hurr durr movies r 4 dumb ppl"- Keep in mind that the top 3 rated movies on IMDb are from BOOKS, Shawshank Redemption, Godfather 1 and 2. And the fourth is from a Comic book.)
Honestly, I think you have to be stupid to say that the Godfather 1&2, Shawshank Redemption and Nolan's The Dark Knight were bad interpretations of a literary work.
>Pic def related
Good books can't be converted to film

It's pretty much the only way the masses will read a book, is if a movie adaption is coming out and there's hype around it. It's also probably the only way to make a real living as a writer anymore.
my prose is shit.
how can i improve
Write
Read fiction
Read books about writing
Write books about reading
Fuck her

what the hell is existentialism
that moment where you realize you exist and it's really overwhelming and kind of spooky that you have to make decisions dependent on that reality.
Existentialism is a reaction to the nihilism inherent in the death of God and secularization of Western civilization. In previous eras, man's life was given meanig by God. With science slowly disproving God, we are left with a vacuum of meaning. Since nature abhors a vacuum, various philosophers have attempted to prove that man is capable of creating his own meaning even if that meaning ultimately proves absurd.

An idea that seems really really cool when you're 18.
Has anyone read this book? I've read recently that I suffer from learned hopelessness, and was hoping that this book might change my hopeless attitude. Do you think these books are generally bullshit?
bump cause im also interested

Vaulted me out of my funk... so, fellow moderate pessimists, go buy this book.

Optimists are bad people and should only be allowed to live because of how difficult and costly it would be to kill them all.
Opinions on him?
Which of his books are the best or otherwise worth reading?
Great author. Brilliant ideas. His prose is a tad pulpy tho. My favorite book by him is VALIS. But I'm a tad biased because I'm schizo and I find it to be one of the best portrayals of the disease. Second favorite would be A Scanner Darkly. I cried when I got to the ending and he dedicates the book to all the friends of his that died from junk. But I might be a tad biased with this too since I used to be a junkie. If drugs and schizophrenia are too edgy for you then Do Androids Dream Electric Sheep would probably be your best bet. As I'm sure you already know, 'tis the book Bladerunner was based off.
>>7667712
This is a controversial opinion, but I've tried reading a few of his books and never made it past the first 20 pages at most.
His prose is just insufferable and I don't care what any of you have to say about his ideas, he couldn't write his way out of a wet paper bag.
As pointed out whenever this topic arises - great ideas, terrible prose.
Don't start with Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (like most people do because of Blade Runner); it's got some of his worst writing. If you can put up with some crap writing, try Ubik.
If you want some Dick SF with better prose, try his 1970s novels, especially A Scanner Darkly.
Alternatively, try his non-SF novels (e.g. In Milton Lumky Territory, Confessions of a Crap Artist). They lack the great ideas of his SF, but the prose is much better. The non-SF books read like an apprentice Richard Yates.
Does /lit/ like James Clavell and his Asia Saga?
Its rather enjoyable if you can stomach 1200 pages.
There was a span of two weeks I saw a lot of praise for it a little while ago. Haven't seen much recently though I think it is well received here.

I loved it when I was a teenager, but the incorrect names really tickle my autism now. There are some good jerk off scenes
