I really liked it when I read it but I had no idea what Caesar was trying to say before they killed him.

Sorry, Richard II is probably the best. Richard's speech in the jailcell is brilliant and almost perfectly describes the relationship people have between the world and themselves. But JC is great in its own right, I suppose it is largely a matter of taste at this point.

Still have never read any of his histories.

Has anyone on /lit/ read this book? What did you think?
7 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Haven't actually read it.

But being a film student I have hear about it plenty, and now I see the hero's journey in pretty much every story I see/read.

I guess I should probably get around to reading it.

I too would like to know

OP here, I'm about halfway through it. I think that while it has its uses in deconstructing common movie plots etc, it's purpose was never to provide 'one size fits all' formula that all fiction follows. I think Campbell's intent was to create something through which myths that have been written off by the modern world could be re-analysed and made relevant again. In my opinion, he's done a pretty good job so far.

That being said, it's probably good to be aware of the stages of the monomyth if you're in film school, and at least one way of interpreting their psychological significance.

can you try making a thread only when you've READ a book that you want to DISCUSS

asking which book to read first isn't worth making a thread about.

How would (or is, if you have a specific example) sincerity be conveyed in a sci-fi/fantasyish story?

>inb4 trying to be sincere makes you insincere
Really, it comes down to: I'm trying to write a series of stories, but it's hard for me to get past the notion of "muh world building". The world-building aspect is necessary, as it leans farther toward fantasy than, say, Infinite Meme and doesn't have such a direct "ENTERTAINMENT IS KILLING US" allegorical connection to the real world.

It's easy to conceive of being sincere in nonfiction essays, but this is my first foray into a fiction that deviates pretty far from the real world, and I'm deathly afraid of ending up writing something that feels dishonest.

Fair enough, my concern is that there's still inevitably going to be some of it, and I don't want the story to devolve into a wowsocoolman description-fest.

Maybe it has something to do with not having an actual "arc" plotted out at this point; I want the character(s) to exist in this world that has a lot of history already, and even though the characters themselves have their own fears and desires it's nothing compared to the High Drama that preceded them.

This is such a ritual-poem, it reminded me of that Gaelic poem about the town that tried the young man for not marrying after the age of thirty or so. I've only read it in English of course, but I can't find the compendium at the moment.

Does anyone know what that poem was called?

Also, can you relate Spengler's account of Asystematic Classical Law to Irish poetry?

Hello /lit/.

I come for a little bit of help. Tomorrow I will be taking a exam for a possible English tutoring position. Unfortunately, I'm not sure if my current skills will suffice in getting me the position. I know I'm doing this quite last minute but is there any obscure tips on grammar that you guys would happen to know.

Thanks.

Out with it. You'll probably get the job just because you have interest in it. When I was interviewed for my tutor job at university all they did was grill with some weird questions that didn't make any sense. I think most jobs work that way. Now deliver the nudes.

I want to get into modern based poetry. Something written post-1980, that is respected by critics but not too hard to read for a sophomore-fag. What do you recommend?

If so, can anyone tell me some of their favorite/most interesting cantos?
