What are some good books that focuses on the romantic relationship between a man and a woman?
>>7673920
Most of them
Tarzan
>>7673920The Sun Also Rises
What is the best Shakespeare?
If you post anything other than this you are wrong
>>7673874
I really liked it when I read it but I had no idea what Caesar was trying to say before they killed him.
Sorry, Richard II is probably the best. Richard's speech in the jailcell is brilliant and almost perfectly describes the relationship people have between the world and themselves. But JC is great in its own right, I suppose it is largely a matter of taste at this point.
Still have never read any of his histories.
What are the most useful book/books you have ever read in your life /lit/?
>>7673809
How to Influence Others and make Friends
Mein Kampf
Schopenhauer's 'On Women'
Decline of the West
Atlas Shrugged
The Culture of Critique series
Anything by Evola
>>7673809
Infinite Jest. If didn't read it, I wouldn't have had something to throw at my dad, who in one of his drunken stupors came into my room one night looking lecherously upon my person.
Temporary Autonomous Zone and other essays - Hakim Bey
Le Pli, Leibniz et le Baroque - Gilles Deleuze
Cinema - Gilles Deleuze
Visual Magick - Jan Fries
Principia Discordia
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas - Hunter S. Thompson
Hilarotragoedia - Giorgio Manganelli
Has anyone on /lit/ read this book? What did you think?
Haven't actually read it.
But being a film student I have hear about it plenty, and now I see the hero's journey in pretty much every story I see/read.
I guess I should probably get around to reading it.
I too would like to know
>>7673808
OP here, I'm about halfway through it. I think that while it has its uses in deconstructing common movie plots etc, it's purpose was never to provide 'one size fits all' formula that all fiction follows. I think Campbell's intent was to create something through which myths that have been written off by the modern world could be re-analysed and made relevant again. In my opinion, he's done a pretty good job so far.
That being said, it's probably good to be aware of the stages of the monomyth if you're in film school, and at least one way of interpreting their psychological significance.
Who is the author version of Terrence Malick?
Julius Caesar
Wordsworth?
I wanna try to fit one more novel into my reading schedule for the spring. I'm deciding between something by Henry James or either of Hawthorne's two major works. Which of these two does /lit/ prefer?
henry james for sure
can you try making a thread only when you've READ a book that you want to DISCUSS
asking which book to read first isn't worth making a thread about.
Movie when?
Who's gunna play the huge tits?
you really want Hollywood ghouls to get their hands on this? After what The Hobbit went through?
>>7673698
Lord of the rings was pretty good.
But I gotta agree that the Hobbit was fucking butchered.
How would (or is, if you have a specific example) sincerity be conveyed in a sci-fi/fantasyish story?
>inb4 trying to be sincere makes you insincere
Really, it comes down to: I'm trying to write a series of stories, but it's hard for me to get past the notion of "muh world building". The world-building aspect is necessary, as it leans farther toward fantasy than, say, InfiniteMemeand doesn't have such a direct "ENTERTAINMENT IS KILLING US" allegorical connection to the real world.
It's easy to conceive of being sincere in nonfiction essays, but this is my first foray into a fiction that deviates pretty far from the real world, and I'm deathly afraid of ending up writing something that feels dishonest.
>>7673641
Just suck my dick.
>>7673641
Just focus on the characters and make shit up as needed.
Worldbuilding is overrated shit.
>>7673708
>Worldbuilding is overrated shit.
Fair enough, my concern is that there's still inevitably going to be some of it, and I don't want the story to devolve into a wowsocoolman description-fest.
Maybe it has something to do with not having an actual "arc" plotted out at this point; I want the character(s) to exist in this world that has a lot of history already, and even though the characters themselves have their own fears and desires it's nothing compared to the High Drama that preceded them.

Some of you might find this interesting.

I want to watch it but an hour and a half is way too long at this hour. Maybe tomorrow.
WHOA.
This is such a ritual-poem, it reminded me of that Gaelic poem about the town that tried the young man for not marrying after the age of thirty or so. I've only read it in English of course, but I can't find the compendium at the moment.
Does anyone know what that poem was called?
Also, can you relate Spengler's account of Asystematic Classical Law to Irish poetry?
Hello /lit/.
I come for a little bit of help. Tomorrow I will be taking a exam for a possible English tutoring position. Unfortunately, I'm not sure if my current skills will suffice in getting me the position. I know I'm doing this quite last minute but is there any obscure tips on grammar that you guys would happen to know.
Thanks.

Who is this Jap who makes me want to fap?
>>7673614
I shouldn't have derailed my own thread with such a provocative picture, huh?
>>7673617
Out with it. You'll probably get the job just because you have interest in it. When I was interviewed for my tutor job at university all they did was grill with some weird questions that didn't make any sense. I think most jobs work that way. Now deliver the nudes.
Could this be considered post-structuralist?
I don't know
>>7673520
dumb frogposter
I want to get into modern based poetry. Something written post-1980, that is respected by critics but not too hard to read for a sophomore-fag. What do you recommend?
>>7673473
Jay Wright
Geoffrey Hill
WS Merwin
John Ashbery
>>7673514
Yeah those are definitely some easy poets to get into
Realistically speaking, what the fuck do I do with a BA in English? I'm in my Junior year and just now realize that I'd rather not be a teacher.
Literally nothing
Should've gone into journalism senpai
>>7673471
Flush it down the toilet.
Or get an MA in something that'll make you at least marginally more employable.
>>7673471
Not American, but based on its name I'm guessing Junior year is first year? Why not just switch to another degree then?
Is anyone a fan of Dante's Divine Comedy?
If so, can anyone tell me some of their favorite/most interesting cantos?
I need to analyze any random canto for homework, but since we haven't read all three parts yet, I don't know how to choose one.
Never heard of it
>>7673440
no, nobody is a fan of the divine fucking comedy
purgatorio XXX is the GOAT canto
Would it be fair to call this the Taxi Driver of literature?
>>7673413
Would it be fair to compare a book to a film?
>>7673413
That's White Noise. But nerdier and middle aged.
>>7673413
no.
the book is a criticism of the french people for so easily being completely steamrolled by the germans and co-operating with them so readily during WW2 era vichy france.
what did you think the book was about?
