There is a master of Creative writing on mi city... I am thinking about taking it, but at the same time I feel stupid for doing it... What do you think about Creative writing, anons?
7 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Are there any recommended free online creative writing courses?
>>
That's like getting a masters to try and play the piano. Sure someone can teach you to do it but it's something you can EASILY learn on your own. As with every other skill all you gotta do is learn the basics and then practice. In this case what I'm saying is go fucking write something to the best of your ability. It will probably be shit. Bring it to /lit/ for critique and listen to the people who actually take you seriously. Repeat.

Question is, do you read often? If not go read a book goddamn. How could one write music if they'd never heard any before?

Well, my bachelor degree is on literature. I dropped it a while ago, I had some issues about what it meant to study literature... then I just went back to finish it.
The point is, I actually think the same as you, but I also think publishing is more about social skills than writing abilities... I am pretty biased since I left my work on a publishing house and reality fucked my little pampered ego.

>here is a situation: you are with someone, they point at a hippo and laugh

>here are your choices: (1) say 'that is not funny' and point at a tree and laugh and say 'that is funny' (2) say 'that's interesting you think a hippo is funny, because i don't think a hippo is funny' and think 'this person believes a hippo is funny, i will not be their friend' (3) ask why they laughed at the hippo and listen to their explanation and maybe think 'i understand people are different and i believe this person has told me the truth about why they laughed at the hippo and, though i did not laugh at the hippo, i understand that this person who did, whose truth in this exists privately in abstraction, is not better or worse than me, but only, as is the case for every person who is not me, different than me'

What does /lit/ think of Tao Lin's philosophy?

That's not a philosophy and it's nothing that hasn't been said before. In a word, banal.

Hello /lit/,
I'm looking to start with some Pablo Neruda.
Anyone have any suggestions as to where I should start?

"Selected poems". Stephen Mitchell's translations are very good, but he hasn't made a lot.
>>
>>7679068
I think Extravagario is probably his most accessible. Full Powers, some Elemental Odes and Canto General should also be read. Again, in Mitchell's translation there are some Odes and parts of Extravagario, but not many.

I've been trying to get into books again, and so I read a couple Banana Yoshimoto novels. I thought they were nice. The way she communicates the way she feels, and how she sees things is really pleasant, even when there isn't a lot going on in the story.

What should I read now, /lit/?

He's a favorite of MFA and undergraduate creative writing classes. For good reason, actually. His works can teach you a good deal about narrative voice.

Hello /lit/, im in need of a book/novel/shortstory/movie.

To be specific, i need it to have some sort of spacetravel (further a few lightyears).

I'm writing my exam paper on the special theory of relativity. The weird rules of the school have decided that i need some sort of literature mix'ed into my paper. Therefore i would like to talk about the impossibility of spacetravel to a far away object with modern technology, while analysing the novel from a english literature point of view.

The Star Wars could work, but since i've never been a big fan of the SW series, it would be a pain to work through a book/movie.

Thank you

Nah, Aristotle didn't have insight we haven't figured out. Just like he didn't have Physical/Metaphysical insight we wouldn't have later figured out or disproved.

you need to built the docks further from the library with a tunnel for the books to go to the library so we don't lose incoming books to stealthy sailors. or i guess you could have built the library further from the docks and a tunnel to it, but you can work that out when you get there

Dictionaries are wonderful things. As are search engines.

What I'm actually trying to ask is whether it actually means what this video says it means:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqovm-Io2D0

I searched it myself and couldn't find anything, but I also doubt they'd just steal the word and pretend it means something it doesn't.
>>
That's actually quite interesting.

It seems that the guy behind the video, a graphic designer called John Koenig, has actually made a project out of coining new words to describe emotional states. He's the guy who made the video, and his project is called 'The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows'.

http://www.dictionaryofobscuresorrows.com/

It seems pretty good. So no, he's not 'stealing' the word - it's his invention - although it does have a solid Greek etymology, which is always nice.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lachesis_(mythology)

Whether that counts as 'real' in your sense is a matter of opinion. Google just gave me 28,800 hits for it, so that's pretty good currency. Whether it will eventually enter an official lexicon like the OED would depend on how much it is used and where. Lots of general usage helps, but a bestselling author, a prestige publication or a pop star could do a lot to help the situation. The OED actually added 'bootylicious' not too long ago pretty much because of Beyoncé.

http://www.personal.psu.edu/ejp10/blogs/thinking/2008/04/how-bootylicious-got-into-the.html

A bit of googling has also revealed that this exact question has previously featured on both reddit and tumblr. So I'd get out of here if I were you, anon, before the /lit/ wolves smell your blood and start gathering...

:-) Cheers.

What to do if you write yourself into a corner?

>>
>>7678808

Write yourself out of it. Duh.

Or just leave it unfinished and say it's open to interpretation or something.
>>
Kill off protagonist and switch the main POV.
Guess it depends on what kind of corner you wrote yourself into.
>>
>>7678808
I usually refer back to my notes/outline/planning and see which direction I intended to take it and probably take a few steps back in my writing to help achieve that.

Or if the new direction I'm going in is better than my outline (imo) then I'll have to reconsider the outline and consider the possibilities the new direction might take me in.

If your planning/notes are thorough though, you shouldn't necessarily be stuck in a corner or caught off guard by writer's block or anything like that (of course, it might still happen, but a thorough outline is half of the hardest job in writing).
