The dust must have settled by now, and we can begin to appreciate just how autistic this abomination is and what has become of it. The book is enjoying a short-lived highlight on some book blogs and there are people dedicated to reading the entire thing: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCpe3rJIwv3isMjyNJBzXC5Q

I think it's time to discuss what went so wrong but so right, what could have been done in the hindsight, et cetera. Anyways, alt-/lit/ thread.

I personally don't like it because it doesn't give me stuff for doing nothing in return. The current sort of centrist welfare state I live in does provide me with what I need though. Hybrid economies aren't perfect but they're the best we've got so far.

PURE IDEOLOGY

*sniff*

So I'm doing a paper on the works of Tolkien, and we just had a lecture todday on how The Lord of the Rings is essentially racist because of its Eurocentrism.

Is this really a valid criticism? Is it wrong for a man to write a story that takes inspiration from his own ancestry and culture? I feel like this is something that only a white man could be criticized for.

It is a racist culture which it's taking inspiration from. Think about how sauron is the good guy
>>
>>7676688
Suaron is of the same race as the more noble men in LotR, he has just become corrupted. I dont see how that's racist.
>>
No, it is not a valid crticisim. It is a wonderfully entertaining book written by a man with a very inoffensive worldview.

How can you avoid cluttery dialogue? Most of my writing seems to feel like

"Text," PersonA said.
"Text?" PersonB asked.
"Text," PersonC said.

Is this alright or is there a better way to do it?

vary it up, give them physical motions. And often times you can inform who the speaker is by context, so you dont need to label them for each line..

And if someone is asking a question and you end it with a ?, you dont need to say "they asked"
>>
Anon noticed the thread and wanted to help OP.
-Why doesn't he just do it like Joyce?
He then proceeded to write a meta post as an example.
-It may free you from having to think of synonyms of said, you only have to do it when you need to.
He remarked smilingly.
>>
>>7672765
unnecessary
once established that its conversation between person a and person b, take out 'who-said-what'

example:
"Text," PersonA said.
"Text?" PersonB asked
"PersonA replies, continues conversation?"
"It's called running dialogue, dumbass."
"Honestly, Colin, I never expected that sort of behavior from you,"
"Eat my metaphorical shit, Martha. Fuck you, and your unseasoned chicken."

Does anyone know what happened to Megan Boyle?

Her book "Liveblog" was supposed to come out today but didn't for some reason (per amazon). She hasn't updated any social media/tumblr/etc for months or years. Her publisher has zero mention of her or the book.

Dear /lit/,

I am a struggling (read: homeless) dilettante; i realize it is not your problem, but i am homeless because i follow my heart too much and my heart loves morphine pumping through it from time to time--origins aside: i come to you for *help*

i need this book (pic related) but i don't have the money. i can have it shipped to my mother's house and pick it up there when i visit her in a week. i ask for any like-minded and well-heeled ladies or gentlemen to gift it to me.

Currently nothing, but I'm staring at Conan right now and doing nothing with it.

I might pick up a random book by an author I never heard about and give them a go, and report back if it 's tolerable.

Hi /lit/

I don't usually browse this board but I had a quick question. I'm reading Walden by Thoreau, and in the Economy chapter he says:

>"The student who secures his coveted leisure and retirement by systematically shrinking any labor necessary to man obtains but an ignoble and unprofitable leisure"

What does he mean by this? Specifically the part about shrinking labor necessary to man? I understand the general idea of this section, but this particular phrasing is a bit confusing to me.

Thanks. Pic unrelated.

I think he is suggesting that you make your lifestyle simple, limit what you consider necessary. So you know...don't buy a lot of unnecessary crap, find cheap rent, etc
>>
>>7680341
He means that NEETs should kill themselves.
>>
>>7680341
Leisure should not be attained through avoiding 'good' work. Wandering in woods, hoeing plots, &c.
